Hi, I'm a new player to Minecraft, (started yesterday afternoon) and I wanted to show other people like myself who want something that looks actually nice and can be expanded upon instead of a hidey-hole in the side of a mountain that can be easily built, with very little effort or time consumption..
As stated above, this design only takes one stack of wooden planks, saving you TONS of precious time on the first day. Here is the plan, step by step:
1) Analyze the world around you. If you've spawned in an area where there are barely any trees or no trees at all you better find an area with s'more trees. Perfect areas for me are forested valleys between high mountains.
2) Collect 16 logs. When you convert exactly 16 logs into wooden planks it gives you exactly 64 wooden planks.
3) Create a workbench, (everyone should know how) and create four sticks. Use two of the sticks and 3 wooden planks for one pick. Save the other two sticks for later.
4) Find a surface vein of coal or in a cave. I'd recommend you mine all of it, even though you will only use two according to this plan.
5) Find the area where you want to build your house. The area must be flat and must be at least 8x8x8.
6) Build your house:
-Build two walls, 3 long, 1 wide, and 3 tall. They will be facing each other and one will have a two block hole in the center, (for the door). They will each be 4 blocks apart.
-Build two other walls to complete the structure, 4 long, 3 tall and 1 wide. Instead of having them actually touching the other two walls, have them moved one space outwards, forming a structure with no corners. In between these walls there should be 3 blocks.
-Climb onto the roof using a dirt pillar or some other way, (do not use ladders) and place a dirt block on top of any of the walls. Then, place the wooden blocks next to the dirt block so that they never touch the walls, only float above the area in between the walls. Take away the dirt and jump back down.
-Go inside, craft 8 torches with 2 coal and 2 sticks and place them around the room wherever you want. You can also set down your workbench wherever you want, but craft a door before doing anything else.
-Go outside, and place the door so it faces the outside, that way, you can shoot through the door at skeletons, and they can't shoot back at you, (that is, if you have a bow already).
If you followed these specifications you will only have used 54 wooden blocks, including the workbench, door, sticks, torches and pick. You are now free to happily expand any which way you want, or change the design, of course. Enjoy your somewhat aesthetically pleasing shack! :laugh.gif:
Sand is WAY better then a diamond sword. What's better than diamond? Nothing.
But sand is better than nothing, right? Diamond < Nothing < Sand. Thusly, sand is better than a diamond sword.

This hasn't worked for a couple of updates now, and you don't mention the option of charcoal. Which version did you "just start" with?
