As far as a ranking system goes, would a log be higher than a wooden plank, or vise versa? A log is worth 4 wood planks, but the only thing you can craft with a log is wood planks, and wood planks are the basis of almost every craftable item. So really, I can't decide.
But you also needs logs for planks. So they're more important.
If someone gave you 64 stacks of planks, you would be able to get a lot of use out of them. If someone gave you logs and told you to use it for whatever you want, except for planks, you would be much less happy. Saying logs are better is like saying wood is better than diamond, since you need wood to get stone, and you need stone to get iron, and you need iron to get diamond. Or saying iron ore is more important than iron because you need the ore to get the iron. No, it is the end product that is more important, not the pre-reqs.
Logs win on all accounts, simply because logs are both. Absolutely anything you can do with planks, whether it is using it as fuel, making tools, stairs, bookcases - antyhing - can also be done with logs. Not only that, you'll get four times the amount to boot!

The most wonderful thing about science is that it doesn't ask for your faith, it asks for your eyes. The universe doesn't care about what you believe.
From a design standpoint, logs look better, but are accentuated by planks. From a supply standpoint, logs are better storage of wood. As fuel, planks win.

I'm agreeing with this because this is pretty much the only valid argument that would make sense.
Always the prerequisite. Not only is it more efficient to store them but they can be turned into things that the other product cannot be. You get 4 planks for 1 log so storing as logs gives you 400% efficiency. You can also make Charcoal with Logs, but can't with just Planks.
The same thing goes with anything that has a prerequisite. You can carry 1 Crafting Bench, 1 Stack of Brown Mushrooms, 1 stack of Red mushrooms, and a stack of bowls. That is 4 item slots for 320 Hearts of Healing. Sure it takes 3 seconds to craft a couple of them, plus a few seconds to break the crafting table back down, but it's better than only getting 20 slots for the same amount of slots used.

Agree with this, its the only comment needed end of story.
So... 4 Planks is worse than 1 Plank? lol k

logs and planks are 100% = in my opinion because without logs you couldent get wood or basicly everthing else that uses wood and with out wood logs would only be used for decoration or charcoal therfor they both have their own pupose like every other block in the game and relie on each other
Your argument is invalid. You say that a diamond pick is more important than wood because it's an end-product. Then you say that planks are more important than wood because they are also an end-product. However, they're not. Unless one uses them for decoration (which can also be done with wood), they are merely an ingredient for making end-products like pickaxes. So planks are just as much a pre-req as wood is.
The argument isn't that pre-reqs are not important. If that was the case, diamonds would be worthless. The arguemnt is that a pre-req is less important than the produce. Wood is the pre-req, planks are the product.
how about this for a question: Why does your ranking system need both logs and planks? The poll is pretty much locked even, so neither is a clear winner. Only have 1 type of wood.

No, that's like saying sand is better then a diamond sword. Oh wait...
Without the log, you don't have a plank. And without a plank, you don't have sticks, and without sticks, you don't have a diamond pickaxe. So without a log, you don't have a diamond pickaxe.
Wait a minute, I have seen the weather in MC, but when did Notch implement temperature?
EDIT: I hope I'm not the only one who thinks Notch kinda looks like he has a trollface in that smiley.
I wish I was in this :C

And the end product of 64 Logs is 256 Planks, so by your own argument...Logs are better.
