There's hard, and there's downright annoying.
Besides, I really don't get the usual "the Nether is supposed to be hard" statement.
Who wants something hard when there is no noticeable reward?
I mean, is there even a reason to risk your life at every second in the nether?
Wasting arrows, falling in lava, and mining netherrack really isn't my idea of fun.
The Nether would be much more interesting if you could actually build something in it without being bombarded by fireballs every second.
Besides, punching fireballs back at the ghast is even worse than just shooting at 'em.
The fireballs don't do any significant damage to them, require good timing to hit, and never hit those fast moving ghasts since they're not homing or anything.
Nobody seems to realize this, but the Nether is, in essence, HELL.
Since when is the Hell a walk in the park? Is eternal suffering supposed to be delightful? No, so suck it up or go back to the overworld.
There's no reward? The three blocks in the Nether are among the most useful in the game. A block that emits light, a block that burns infinitely, and one that slows mobs down. Tell me, how often do you see a large project (Legit or not) that doesn't use glowstone? Or a shrine that doesn't use Netherrack?
I'll usually build a tower if I want to go to the Nether. If you're at the maximum height in the real world, when placed in the Nether you will be proportionally as high, and the nether is effin' huge so chances are you'll be in the top "roof" layer of the netherrack with a cave generated around you. perfect place for a first base with generally not enough room for ghasts to spawn. I hollowed mine out pretty big and made a town for the Pigmen. I had to clear it out once because I accidentally hit one that wandered directly in front of me while I was working.

or get a bow and arrows. you can hit the fireballs with the arrows from a bow too.
