It is vertical like a web. In real life spiders create webs between two trees. Same concept in the picture.
Yes, but the 'strands' of web (or bars of the gate) are perfectly vertical and horizontal, and you can even see rust on the bars! Plus, jeb as already said that the wiki is 'pretty accurate' and the wiki says that they are 'iron bars'.

The wiki wouldn't know more than we know because we create the wiki, and if I broke stone it to pieces then put it back it wouldn't like bricks either. So the strands of the web don't matter.

The wiki names are a guess, and the stone bricks in the picture are most likely a new block, since in Notch's picture you can clearly see the 1.7 cobble. And besides, the new blocks on the wiki are already semi-confirmed, since Jeb said that the wiki was pretty accurate. And there is rust on the bars. Look at the zoomed in version.

"Already, we can see some potential changes in blocks and textures - for example, what appears to be stone brick, and mossy stone brick in the ruins image. What appear to be a giant red and brown mushroom can also be seen in the village screenshot, in the middle-left."
So...
The 'rust' could be bugs or bits/leaves stuck in the web.

I don't understand how you can get this from what the wiki said....
And they wouldn't try to put this much detail with such a low resolution texture, and on the left side of the middle of the gate, you can see a solid gray rectangle, presumably where the key would go.
Now i'm asking, what could this be?
My idea is a cobweb. This has mossy cobblestone. New dungeon design, village ruins, both? Who knows?
I don't see how people see cobweb... it is completely flat, and they don't even look like web....

It's a pedia, so it could be wrong.

Looks like an iron fence / gate to me.
