I don't understand why Notch would add pistons -.- It takes away the simplicity of Minecraft I think.
So because its to hard for you ? you dont like it? this kinda reminds me of the attitude of average lowlife console gamers, no offence.
I agree with you entirely, there are too many games today that are too easy because they remove or choose to avoid using anything that will cause the less adaptable players to curl up in a ball and cry while they either wait for the hissing to stop or die from the destruction of what they believe to be their masterpiece of a house.
I don't mean to step into this little flame-war, but I think there's something to be said about the difference between 'simple' and 'easy.' I don't know that he was saying "Adding pistons makes Minecraft to HARD." I think he might have just been saying it makes it too "cluttered."
Do 'pistons' fit into the theme of 'something a guy would build if he was stuck on an island full of resources.' I guess it's possible, but it seems like quite a leap from stone-tools to pneumatic pistons. There are several thousand years of technology there. (Although, presumably the steam engine is already in-game, so maybe we're right on track.)
A 'simple' Minecraft is 'more things to do with the tools you have'. A Minecraft where you have thousands of specialized devices isn't anymore difficult, but it is much more complex. A favorite saying is, "More doesn't mean better."
So, I think pistons were added because someone made them as an experiment and Notch thought they were fun. There's definitely something to be said for that. However, that doesn't mean they definitely belong in the 'mood' of the game, and it doesn't mean something else (rope and pulleys?) wouldn't have been more keeping with the theme.
The good thing about Minecraft is that it's a primarly small-group/ single-player experience, so it's quite simple to just 'not build that'. So other than the implementation taking the programmer away from spending time on your own pet project, there's no real reason to complain that a new block was added.
I'm really interested as how spider webs are going to work when they're properly added, will they only be in spider dungeons? Or will they randomly appear with spiders, kind of like chickens laying eggs?
I agree, the idea is interesting, another question to ask would be: in the case that a web in on the floor and you walk onto it, will this cause you to be stuck until it is destroyed? or maybe just slow you down like slow sand? either one makes you a prime target for the spiders.
Maybe spiders don't attack on sight, but rather wait until you step into a web...
Also, I hope nether support means there might be something new in the nether.

Everything I build is 100% legit. No mods, no tools, nothing but time and effort.

The key here is that there is no way, currently, to do what pistons do: Move blocks. And moving blocks is a fundamental operation in that being able to do so solves a LOT of problems. We won't need, for example, a specific gate block to handle water flow. Or lava flow. Or even iron doors (though I'm not advocating they go away).
As to if some sort of rope/pulley would be better... I don't know. Pistons are easier to envision, at least for me. I don't know how you'd craft, place, and utilize a rope in as simple a way as you would a piston.
You guys are missing the part where they've said that pistons are going to be redesigned anyways, as far as how they look/fit in with minecraft. I remember notch saying something like it wasn't fantasy enough or something.
Yeah, here we go:
Jens was working on integrating/tweaking the Piston mod, which will probably get delayed as a result of this. We don’t want to just add it as-is because it doesn’t quite feel “fantasy” enough, and there’s a lot of corner cases we need to solve.

Yeah, you're absolutely right.
And I have no idea how rope would work either. Not a clue, but how awesome would having "rope" be. hah!
I am curious to see how Notch implements SMP Nether. As in, if it will be simply server-to-server communication via portals (as has been speculated for a while) or if he can actually get the Nether running in the same server instance as the overworld. As excited as I am about the Nether in SMP, that excitement would be tempered somewhat if I had to provision another server just for it... I'd still do it, though!
But until we know more, speculation is all it shall be.

Super excited about Nether in SMP. Finally get to use all those Portals littered about. Not sure how he's planning on doing it - maybe 'stealing' the Bukkit plugin or a separate Nether server - any ideas?

Anyway, I can't wait for maps, I always get lost in single player!

Did you know I write Science Fiction? Well I do. Check it out at http://planetretcon.com/books/
Yeah, here we go:
Taken from notch's post here: http://notch.tumblr.com/post/4928142990 ... dump-again
My understanding of this is that it will definitely have a different look when added to the vanilla game.
Goddamnit Lloyd how did you even do that...
No they aren't, he just mentioned buying a new hat and how so many people liked the website that he got them from.
This is not a Herobrine thread, go find one.
P.S. Herobrine is just a dramatic hoax, it is not real.
Yeah, you're absolutely right.
