I have yet to see any threads on this and decided to be the bearer of good news! Notch is attempting to add a dimension that includes floating islands! Need proof? http://twitter.com/#!/notch/status/70938915862884352
I have faith in Notch! Even if he puts it off, I trust he can make a pretty kickass dimension in the long run. Hopefully it serves more of a purpose than the Nether. Though I really do hope with the addition of a functioning Nether in SMP that we will see some new content. Not holding my breath, however.
Honestly, Notch should be working on the Nether before introducing any more realms. The Nether needs to be seriously expanded to be practical. As it stands there is very little reason to even enter the Nether.
Ummmmm first off.... Nether was made JUST for quick travel and the mobs there are to make it a dangerous option! And on topic with the floating islands....can anyone say Aether?

Yes, Mojang has over a million Beta testers which test their updates extensively. You may even know a few of these beta testers.
Notch said it looks ugly (at the moment), but regardless I'm still excited for a new realm. New portal materials?
However, I agree that Notch should have focused more on updating the Nether. There's only three exclusive materials you could gain from there. It needs minerals and that stuff.
i can definately see the potential problems with floating island generation, and infinite terrain mapping. lets hope notch can convert the code from the INDEV version over to the beta version, with all the new natural blocks, and infinite generation, and still have it look good.

Aether is the opposite of Nether. They aren't floating islands, well for me.
Wonder what it'll look like. I support the addition of more stuff to the nether before adding yet a third stage upon which to play, but I won't complain about new content. Wonder what update it'll be in. Hopefully next one so 1.6 can get out by the end of the month (remember how long nether took).
If it is a new realm, and we can learn anything from nether, maybe we'll get new creatures and items, which would be awesome.

Everything I build is 100% legit. No mods, no tools, nothing but time and effort.
Since the Nether is much more "compact" and is 8x as small, maybe the floating islands will be "depact", if that is the right word for it, and be 8x as big! that would be so awesome...
Sure it may look ugly Notch, but Minecraft started out ugly in Cave Game demo IMO, so it'll turn to look better than you thought it would, like how you got 2,250,000 people to buy your game.

[Location Continued] Really, I am also in my ☼fungiwood bed☼ with a nearby ☼adamantine battle axe☼, eating ☼cat tallow roasts☼, with a ☼gold flask☼ of a legendary drink, sunshine (Kind of like 100% ethyl moonshine alcohol, except more dwarven.)

Many people can, and some did before anyone actually started work on the mod using that name.
I'd also like to see infinite height to maps. it would be a bit difficult to implement with the whole skylight thing, but I bet that could be worked around. maybe a system that allowed skylight to spread outward gradually - like regular light does. After 64 blocks or so, you could stop doing skylight computations because they wouldn't matter for anything less than that, as long as there was a neighboring skylight block to spread from.

If I only had a time machine...
