Building my city up a bit and am starting to do some aesthetics. Having trouble making nice roads though. Tried using search and couldn't find anything on roads specifically. I would really like something like a plaza- a decorated or patterned road but I am no good at doing things like that.
I guess constraints are some measure of realism (wool is not a viable road material >.>) and I'm not using any mods. Anyone got some suggestions?
Mixing more than one type of block helps make things very nice. My roads are smoothstone halfblocks in the middle, with cobblestone on the edge. The reverse also works well.
gravel with a (raised) cobblestone slab border?
brick bordered with flaming Netherrack?
one completely made out of glowstone?
depends on what looks good with whatever texture pack you're using and if you're playing legit, however many resources you plan on spending
I like gravel roads because it's the only real use I find for Gravel, and you can outline it with like Cobble Slabs and it looks really good, or you can put cobble in the ground beside it at the same level. Gravel sounds cool when you walk on it.
Depends on the biome/theme you're going for really, but have you considered sandstone flanked by smoothstone slabs? I think it looks quite appealing; here's an example from my base:
I play Minecraft standing on the roof of my house with a laptop, completely naked, the wind lapping at my hair and genitals. It is very refreshing. The neighborhood watch loves me.
I always used Cobble and / or Smoothstone Slabs [if I have the coal to waste and want the aesthetics], but smoothstone slabs + sand / sandstone looks epic.

The Weighted Companion Cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.
Nice ideas, came up with a nice style that I am happy with. Basically this is road meant for central town, the wealthier places, so it has to look nicer than just cobble.
If you are ok with using cobblestone, try placing a single layer of cobblestone slabs and put cobblestone stairs at the edge with the lower part facing inwards.
It makes the road look sunken into the ground, but only half a block and thus adds to variety in heigts.
Just wanted to say thank you for this bit of advice. I really like the look of it - dresses up some of my previous cobblestone roads quite nicely.
What I've done is:
* EXTREMELY RURAL- put loads of bonemeal into the ground, then hack a path through it, but dont make it to staight, leave a random patch of grass every little while.
*Rural- gravel/sand mix pretty common
*Often used rural road- cobble road with patches of mossy.
*Urban- smooth stone block for side walk, smooth slabs for road

We use that on our RPG server. Looks fairly good, although I'm liking Swift's design with the sandstone and half steps.

If only there was smooth stone slab style stair blocks :sad.gif:
Incidentally the blocks look crooked, I guess this is rendering based rounding errors from only using half blocks lol
