We all fall into patterns that we find most efficient. I arrange my item bar the exact same way every time. I set up my item storage rooms the same way every time. I make a similar mineshaft system the same way every time. Things like that can erode your game experience. We need something novel sometimes, something to spark our creativity and get us going again.
I propose we create a list of persona themes.
In essence, you turn your Minecraft experience into an RPG, where the role itself becomes important. You take on the personality and values of a certain character, and have certain goals related to that. There is no reward for accomplishing the goals (in the same way that there is no true reward in Minecraft aside from personal satisfaction), but it would give you direction, spark the imagination, and maybe knock you out of your "builder's block" that happens after your first half dozen or so worlds.
Update: I'll try to keep this post updated with everyone's suggestions... the first three are mine
*~*~*~*~*
The Stranded Scientist: Something went wrong when you made that teleporter. Very wrong. You awake with a splitting headache in an unfamiliar land, with no possessions save for the clothes on your back. Goals:
[*:1m18ou83]Create a shelter that optimizes your ability to observe your surroundings. As a scientist, you'll want to keep track of the land, and hopefully learn from it.
[*:1m18ou83]Establish research plots and experimental buildings. In order to understand these new plants and creatures (seriously, have you ever seen such a square-looking chicken?) you will need a controlled, sterile environment in which to perform your tests.
[*:1m18ou83]Build a library. You need to store the information you gather, and have a comfortable place to retreat on long nights while you pour over your findings.
[*:1m18ou83]Make a structure with every building material. This will be important for analyzing the materials available to you.
The Dedicated Disciple: The time has finally come. After years of dedicated prayer, you have experienced a true transcendent moment, glimpsing finally the creator... only to return to consciousness in a strange place, bereft of other human life. With a new sense of purpose, you set out into your holy land. Goals:
[*:1m18ou83]Create a shelter with a beautiful view. This is the land of your god, and you want to experience its richness whenever possible.
[*:1m18ou83]Create a temple to your god. Adorn it with symbols and items as you see fit, in order to please this diety.
[*:1m18ou83]Spread totems and talismans across the land. If any are to come after you to this holy place, see to it that they are greeted with warm, inviting symbols from the almighty.
[*:1m18ou83]Prepare a grand offering as you see fit. It is only appropriate to show thanks for the bounty you have been gifted with.
The Paranoid Abductee: Why would they send you here? Why? Who are they? I bet they're here... they're here with you, hunting you. Well, they won't catch you. No, you're too smart for them... perhaps they know this world, but that advantage will not help them. You will escape their grasp... and prepare to seek revenge. Goals:
[*:1m18ou83]Build a large, complex fortress. There is no need to hide - you're smarter, and stronger, and braver than them. Fools! Make your fortress as complicated and confusing as possible, with trap rooms and winding, criss-crossing hallways.
[*:1m18ou83]Establish an underground sanctuary in which you can maintain adequate supplies. You'll need wood, food, and water - no need to return to the surface, where they might catch you once more.
[*:1m18ou83]Lace the surrounding area with traps for would-be invaders. God help anyone who tries to get near your haven...
The Home Maker: you're lost, stranded in the middle of nowhere, waiting for civilization to come, may aswell get prepared.Goals:
Build a village, fellow humans will need a plact to stay with comfort and safety. Create a mansion, you deserva a nice place to stay. Make everything aestheticaly pleasing, even the outhouse.
The Colonist: You have come from a distant land to make a better life for you, and tame nature. Goals:
Build a log cabin in a forest (with a fireplace) Level the land for farming Chop down every tree you see Create civilization
The Monster Fighter: Those unholy beasts! They deserve to burn in the Nether for the damage they've done!
Build a large fortress with many traps and self destructs, keep it well fortified and your treasure in a secret storeroom Fight monsters every night! Keep a constant supply of arrows and swords, and keep records of very successful or unsuccessful nights of hunting You cannot stand for dishonor! For each death, kill ten more monsters! And never, ever run from any monster you fight. If you've tamed the land enough to not have to worry about outside or cave monsters, construct your own darkroom for fighting when you please, complete with obstacles and a monster delivery system
The Tree Hater: You wake up on an abandoned planet, and you think the trees put you there.
Make your first house in a tree; who cares? it doesnt have feelings Make your next shelter entirely out of wood and log
The Artist: You wake up in this beautiful landscape, inspired by the incredable landsapes that surround you. So what do you do? What you were born to... make awesome, 64-bit... drawings? Goals:
Get at least a stack of every single dye. I'm talking ink sacs, dandelion yellow, EVERY SHADE OF GREY. Make at least 10 drawings made of stuff. Must include at least one Obama, because it's cliche. Make a clay slupture out of clay blocks.
Crash-Landed Alien: Well, this is a bit of a sticky wicket. You took a wrong turn at that last star system, ran out of fuel, and ended up crash landing your spaceship in the ocean on this strange, cuboid planet. It doesn't look like anyone saw your ship go down, and your emergency flares conveniently went down with the ship. You have a few possible options:
Signal: Try and devise some manner of creating a signal large enough to be seen from space, to signal that you're lost and need rescue. Be creative! A sky-high pile of TNT is sure to grab the attention of any spacefaring people close to this uncharted planet, but there may be other ways to broadcast your presence to possible rescue. Ship: Maybe if you can find some way of getting back into space... Perhaps you could build it. (Note: This would be hard to do since there's no space travel. But if you just make what looks like a functional ship (Major props to you if you build it out of metal), that could count, as far as the storyline thing goes. Settle: You're not admitting defeat, you're adapting! This is closest to a typical Minecraft experience, this is all about making do. If rescue -does- arrive, perhaps you don't want to go back to your home planet... Although, if the alien you're playing is of a particularly intellectual species, you could follow the guidelines for "Stranded Scientist" and attempt to perform research on the flora and fauna in this planet.
The Trapper: You have come to the strange land of Minecraft to hunt the natural inhabitants of it. Goals:
Build a shelter out of "natural" materials (Snow blocks, logs, etc.) Construct mob traps such as fire pits, land mines and pitfalls. Fill an entire large chest with materials acquired from neutral mobs.
The Nomad: Always keep moving. Goals:
Small and simple huts, consisting of a bed and a workbench Never stay in the same hut more than once in a row Fill your days with exploring Only harm mobs if necessary (So only kill agressive mobs if you don't have a choice, and other than that, just get wool from sheep) Have small Zen gardens
The oceanographer/ocean lover: You awaken one day to see a vast, expansive ocean just for you to explore.
Construct breathing stations all over the ocean floor (mostly just to help with building underwater structures) Build a large underwater base with lots of windows for looking out at the deep blue sea. Build an aquarium for squid to spawn in. You're interested in squid because they seem to be the only living thing that lives underwater. (may have to build very far from underwater base to get it operational). Use boats as your primary mode of transportation and build ports, garages, and other structures for your boats in many far-off locations. make long, expansive paths of glowstone and/or jack o' lanterns underwater that lead to various ports, underwater bases and hidden caves. (note: they do not have to be touching, you merely have to be able to see the next one and the one right after that one.) Construct ships in your ports (as many as you choose, as long as you make at least one) and make sunken ship ruins with valuable treasures inside!
The Baker: You once owned a bakery but eventually went out of business. At the loss of your favorite job, you stupidly decided to commit suicide. After taking that leap off of that building, you awoken to find that you appeared in a very unexpected place. After assessing the situation You then decided to continue your dream of owning the biggest bakery in the world!
Now that you're all alone, you have to grow your own wheat! Make a very large and efficient wheat farm to mass-produce massive amounts of wheat. You're going to need it! Now what was that about a bakery? To make a bakery, you must make a building out of smooth stone (and/or bricks), have at least 5 furnaces, and have at least one brick chimney. With every 2 stacks of wheat that you accumulate, you must expand your bakery by at least 4x4x4. What's a bakery without cake? In order to keep up with demand, you have to make lots of cake. in the bakery, you will make small pedestals to put single cakes upon. These pedestals must be accessible from all sides so the setup will look like this with them:
[] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
[] [] [] [] []
[] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
Also, the more valuable the pedestal, the better (not saying that they have to be made out of diamond, just not dirt, sand, or gravel). Bread. The baker's most basic baked good available. Use half of your wheat to make your bread and place it all in a giant bread chest (more bread chests can be made as others fill to full capacity).
The Cave Dweller: Having been raised in caves, you find yourself abandoned in a bright, wide open landscape, then your agoraphobia kicks in. You can't stand being anywhere but underground. You have a day to gather resources and then at night, you start making your home.
Other then the first day's resources, all resources must come from underground Keep your area dimly lit as possible, preference for redstone torches Absolutely no going above ground No tolerance for "Pieces of sun" (lava) any tunnel ending in pieces of sun or a Miniature sun (lava lake) must be sealed off No venturing into the Nether
The Biographer: You travel to new lands to map out the terrain, indigenous population, and other things. Goals:
]" title="-<->" /> Create a hand-drawn elevation chart of the entire explored map, including mountains, bodies of water, caverns, forests, landmarks, homes, etc. ]" title="-<->" /> Create an animal log in notepad (or similar writing program) about the behaviors and appearance of every mob you encounter. ]" title="-<->" /> Create a shelter composed of mostly glass (you need to study your terrain in a safe enviroment) and a 360 view, with samples of everything you've discovered (saplings, seeds, pork, wool, gunpowder) in a well-secured lab, to be examined for evidence.
The Dwarf:
The harsh daylight burns your eyes! Seek shelter immediately in the first cave you find and wait for nightfall. Only surface at night from now on, only going up to get supplies, but building primarily under ground. Search for ores and create a treasure horde. Build industrial machines like Obsidian forges, mine track networks, cobblestone machines, etc.
The Elf:
Make your home in the trees and try to care after the forest by planting and harvesting sparingly Build only out of materials which naturally blend into the landscape Rarely venture underground or into the Nether, and then only for needed supplies. Wander in a wide arc around the landscape, making tree forts to rest in.
The Wizard:
Build your seat of power and influence, high in a tower above the landscape Spread your influence with smaller arcane towers topped with lightstone or diamond. Acquire a library for your elderich research and redstone experimentation Create many Nether portals to travel quickly throughout your domain.
The Ranger:
[>>-i>] Stay always on the move, bringing all of your supplies with you wherever you roam
[>>-i>] Explore the land far and wide, reaching as far as you can into the wilderness
[>>-i>] Don't settle, camp. Every night, build a temporary shelter with a campfire or torchlight. Dismantle by morning.
[>>-i>] Fear no beast! Kill for your food and clothing. Seek out dungeons and destroy them.
Bear Grylls: You must dominate the land, become its master. Don't let it control YOU.
[*:1m18ou83]Establish a safe shelter to ensure your protection from the wild beasts.
[*:1m18ou83]Find a nice cliff and create a shovel.
[*:1m18ou83]Collect lots of snow.
[*:1m18ou83]Craft many buckets and fill them with water.
[*:1m18ou83]Once all this is done, drink your own ****.
The Viking:
Build a boat Go out to sea and spend most days at sea; NEVER spend the night on the mainland in shelter if you can help it. (You can stay on an island with your bench and make a furnace to cook your meals) Come ashore from time to time to replenish wood, coal, stone, food, but always return to your boat. Eventually obtain string and make fishing pole, bow & arrows Shoot mobs along the shores at night to get items Explore a vast area of the map, discovering all manner of biomes, minerals, surface rarities, and impressive landscapes (take screenies!) Leave chests of loot on various islands and in caves with beacons or torches to show you where you've been Finally, when you are weary of traveling, settle in the most awesome place you know on the map and go forth to find your loot and retrieve it from the various hideouts Pick a different persona, now that you have settled down. E.g. Trader, if you have accumulated a lot of cool schwag such as mushrooms, dyes, brick/clay, coloured wools, rare exotic hardwoods, squid sacs, etc.
The Pirate: The same as above, except you are attacking other players or looting/raiding other player's bases.
The Exorcist:
Start a small colony at the base of a hill at least 30 blocks tall above sea level Build a portal on top of the hill Assemble large amounts of cobblestone and dirt and go through to the nether Depending on where you are, build a fortress of cobble around your portal exit Continue building outward from the portal, making a larger and larger base safe from ghasts Apply dirt blocks/sand and torches and attempt to grow trees, wheat, and cacti Use Invedit or get admin to give you some water source blocks or ice Start a reed farm and a squid hatchery Continue to build outward, create a nice, habitable, modern looking house complete with furniture, pictures, storage chests, and work area. Establish mines for lightstone and tunnels to adjacent areas to build more portals/houses.
The Demon:
Make your main base in the nether Befriend the souls of the damned (Z-pigmen) Only venture into the land of the living when absolute necessary Use lots of lava and fire in your architecture
The Botanical Expert/Enviromentalist:
Establish a farm for every type of farmable item. Study the plants growth, and write many books as you discover more. Create a library to store the information you find. Create a garden for flowers and a darkroom for mushrooms. Don't dig down further than layer 35, the bowels of the Earth are not the place for a botanist. Don't kill passive mobs, you may punch sheep for wool, but no killing. Only kill hostile mobs if need be. Always replant any plant you destroy, don't harm the environment.
The Lumberjack: You awaken on a beach. The only thing you know how to do is chop trees and make tools. Luckily, this world is full of virgin forests. Goals:
Make a wooden house in a forest. Chop all the trees around you. When the trees are cleared for a good amount of distance, move on and make a new wooden house. Keep chopping until the forest is gone. Move to a new forest, and repeat
The Lone Ranger:
Build a sandstone house in the desert Make a giant cactus farm (Sandstone) Only venture out of the desert for materials
Dr Brain, AKA The mad Scientist/Engineer: Having created several devilish machines, tortured thousands of innocents, and eradicated entire populations with the click of a button, you have been sentenced to an exile to Minecraft. However, this is not so much a punishment to you as it is a treat: you can continue to perform experiments...
You have some paranoid traits: he needs an impressive structure to perform his studies, hard to access, and extravagant in its looks. Perform experiments on the field: build pig, cow and chicken traps, and once you know they work, place an example of it in your domain, and find a new experiment. You are also an engineer. You love finding complicated themes of research. When you want to build something, think of how to do it, in a more complicated fashion. Ballistics: You love it. Send those animals into space. Find the most destructive canon possible. Think of how to destroy a biome with the least shots possible
The Survivor:
Waste no time on your first night. Build a small shelter made of dirt and some torches with a door. Avoid monsters when you don't need their drops. Mine only when you need to, you need to conserve your energy. Build a self sufficient base eventually, with farms for all types of plants, a brightly lit grass floored room to hunt in, and a mob trap. Your final goal is to conquer the Nether, bring only the needed tools to take materials and kill whatever Ghasts get in your way, you need not waste time running.
The Hoarder:
Make torches and mine right away, don't spend much time on your house, you'll be living in your mines mostly anyway. When you find Diamonds, use three to make a pick and stash the rest, we wouldn't want to use up your treasure. Gold tools and armor of any kind are forbidden. Gold is to be stashed with your treasures, and made into watches to store in your stash. If you need more health, use food! Iron is common, but you don't care, it goes into your stash, except for the ones you use to make your iron pick, which you will use only for Redstone, Gold, and Diamond. Everything else is to be mined with a stone pick. Your ultimate goal is to establish a mine in the Nether, to get netherrack, soul sand, and glowstone. Redstone machines are useless! Stash your redstone.
The Industrialist:
Build factories, and highly industrialized farms Burn forests (Now that logs don't burn forever, you won't get perma-burning forests) Create minecart stations for fast travel Make a dump system so the waste from your factories is dumped into the ocean
The Ninja: The time has come it is your turn to do the ritual, you must survive on your own and become the greatest ninja alive... if you can live.
If you die the world is gone Your fort must be in a Chinese type house after you survive in the caves Traps are a must, you must guard yourself from the samurai minions You are at peace with nature, no needlessly killing passives
The Warlord: The Kingdom is going to war, and it is your job to prepare the defenses!
[>>-i>] Scout - explore the surrounding area to determine which direction the enemy will most likely approach from and where the battles will take place.
[>>-i>] Prepare - build watchtowers and a signaling system so that all will know when the enemy approaches.
[>>-i>] Defend - build towers, walls, bunkers and choke-points in defensible positions along the avenues of attack.
[>>-i>] The Last Stand - build a castle and keep in the center of the kingdom that will serve as a base of operations and the last line of defense!
The Master Builder: You travel the medieval countryside looking for work and seeking to improve you knowledge and skill.
A Lifetime of Travel - You travel from place to place, looking for new major projects in unique locations, building a modest dwelling for yourself near each construction site. A Lifetime of Learning - Your first project is very small. Each time you move, you must find a project that is more challenging than the one before it. At first it may be a house, statue, or garden, then you progress to a modest church, a bridge, then maybe a bell tower, a library, and so on. Leaving a Legacy - Finally, after years of work and travel you are recognized for your work by the king and he tasks you to build a great Cathedral as the pinnacle of your life's work!
The Great Historian: The Earth has been destroyed, but it's history must remain sacred. You have been tasked with building The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World here on New Eden.
The Great Pyramid - a massive tomb in the desert. The Hanging Gardens - a multi-leveled garden with circulating water and large trees growing on the roof. The Temple of Artemis - a massive Greek temple with many columns. Statue of Zeus at Olympia - A stone carving with a half-shell temple around it on top of a mountain. Mausoleum of Halicarnassus - A great Persian tomb with reliefs and alcoves along all four walls. The Colossus - A tall statue straddling the entrance to a port along the sea. The Great Lighthouse - the tallest structure of the ancient world, built on an island.
Locations should accommodate tourists with viewing platforms, information booths, maybe even a rail system connecting them. For a less intimidating challenge, just build one of the above.
*~*~*~*~*
So, that's the idea. Begin with an idea seed, and work FROM it, not within it... every good character has room to grow, and these are merely launch points for those of us with limited creativity, to spark projects and bring the interest back to the game. Please suggest ideas for more themes, and let me know what you think of this idea :smile.gif:
This idea is actually pretty cool. I think that it would need more "classes" though. I'm a bit of a Paranoid Abductee, myself. It would be cool to see it evolve and change the landscape in a way that I wouldn't usually. 3 diamond blocks for such an innovative idea.
Lost Adventurer: You were out on your boat then a giant wave strands you on an island with noting more than your wits and clothes you set out for a place to spend the night.

That's what I love about the idea - it gets you outside of your normal thinking, takes you on new paths. Thank you for the diamonds! =D Going straight in the sig
welcome to the forums, dont feed the trolls, have a nice day
OT: very nice idea, i have an idea for a role i call : the home maker: your lost, stranded in the middle of nowhere, waiting for civilization to come, may aswell get prepared.Goals:
Build a village, fellow humans will need a plact to stay with comfort and safety. Create a mansion, you deserva a nice place to stay. Make everything aestheticaly pleasing, even the outhouse.
this is just an idea for a role, im not very creative as you can tell :tongue.gif:

That's a good one :smile.gif: It would be fun to make a grand, expansive mansion. I always seem to make mountainside dwellings carved into the rock, with only the bare essentials...
I really like this! If I may, I'd like to write a few personas myself when I get the chance for serious thinking and writing.
Absolutely!! That's why I wanted to post this list :smile.gif: I would love if there was a good long community-created list. I just came up with a few example ideas, I'm not excessively creative and I know other people could do better
The Colonist: You have come from a distant land to make a better life for you, and tame nature. Goals:
[*:37mrp2dv]Build a log cabin in a forest (with a fireplace)
[*:37mrp2dv]Level the land for farming
[*:37mrp2dv]Chop down every tree you see
[*:37mrp2dv]Create civilization

-If you've tamed the land enough to not have to worry about outside or cave monsters, construct your own darkroom for fighting when you please, complete with obstacles and a monster delivery system
(got really inspired by writing this... I'm gonna go play now :smile.gif:
the Tree Hater
you wake up on an abandoned planet, and you think the trees put you there.
make your first house in a tree;who cares? it doesnt have feelings
make your next shelter entirely out of wood and logs
Haha, I love this... I had a mental picture of a guy running through a forest screaming at all the trees and destroying every tree except the one housing his treehouse...
The Artist: You wake up in this beautiful landscape, inspired by the incredable landsapes that surround you. So what do you do? What you were born to... make awesome, 64-bit... drawings?.
Goals-
1. Get at least a stack of every single dye. I'm talking ink sacs, dandelion yellow, EVERY SHADE OF GREY.
2. Make at least 10 drawings made of stuff. Must include at least one Obama, because it's cliche.
3. Make a clay slupture out of clay blocks.

There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary.
Those who do.
And those that don't.
You have come to the strange land of Minecraft to hunt the natural inhabitants of it.
- Build a shelter out of "natural" materials (Snow blocks, logs, etc.)
- Construct mob traps such as fire pits, land mines and pitfalls.
- Fill an entire large chest with materials acquired from neutral mobs.

You could have some fun crossing this with monster hunter :3
The Nomad would be a fun one:
-Small and simple huts, consisting of a bed and a workbench
-never stay in the same hut more than once in a row
-Fill your days with exploring
-Only harm mobs if necessary (So only kill agressive mobs if you don't have a choice, and other than that, just get wool from sheep)

I've got to say that texture packs have revitalized Minecraft for me. I'm playing with Last Days right now and I feel like a scavenger in a dead word. I have a watch tower and an underground bunker and rather than building mansions, I'm building modestly. All of this without my thinking about it, even. Perhaps finding out of the ordinary textures, sound, and or item/name conversions will help you feel like a different character?

The Viking:
The Pirate: The same as above, except you are attacking other players or looting/raiding other player's bases.
The Exorcist:
The Demon:
The Botanical Expert/Enviromentalist:
The Lumberjack: You awaken on a beach. The only thing you know how to do is chop trees and make tools. Luckily, this world is full of virgin forests. Goals:
The Lone Ranger:
Dr Brain, AKA The mad Scientist/Engineer: Having created several devilish machines, tortured thousands of innocents, and eradicated entire populations with the click of a button, you have been sentenced to an exile to Minecraft. However, this is not so much a punishment to you as it is a treat: you can continue to perform experiments...
The Survivor:
The Hoarder:
The Industrialist:
The Ninja: The time has come it is your turn to do the ritual, you must survive on your own and become the greatest ninja alive... if you can live.
The Great Historian: The Earth has been destroyed, but it's history must remain sacred. You have been tasked with building The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World here on New Eden.
Locations should accommodate tourists with viewing platforms, information booths, maybe even a rail system connecting them. For a less intimidating challenge, just build one of the above.

That's what I love about the idea - it gets you outside of your normal thinking, takes you on new paths. Thank you for the diamonds! =D Going straight in the sig

OT: very nice idea, i have an idea for a role i call :
the home maker: your lost, stranded in the middle of nowhere, waiting for civilization to come, may aswell get prepared.Goals:
this is just an idea for a role, im not very creative as you can tell :tongue.gif:
Cube Craft, a simple pack by me!
That's a good one :smile.gif: It would be fun to make a grand, expansive mansion. I always seem to make mountainside dwellings carved into the rock, with only the bare essentials...

Cube Craft, a simple pack by me!
Absolutely!! That's why I wanted to post this list :smile.gif: I would love if there was a good long community-created list. I just came up with a few example ideas, I'm not excessively creative and I know other people could do better

[*:37mrp2dv]Build a log cabin in a forest (with a fireplace)
[*:37mrp2dv]Level the land for farming
[*:37mrp2dv]Chop down every tree you see
[*:37mrp2dv]Create civilization
Those unholy beasts! They deserve to burn in the Nether for the damage they've done!
-Build a large fortress with many traps and self destructs, keep it well fortified and your treasure in a secret storeroom
-Fight monsters every night! Keep a constant supply of arrows and swords, and keep records of very successful or unsuccessful nights of hunting
-You cannot stand for dishonor! For each death, kill ten more monsters! And never, ever run from any monster you fight.
-If you've tamed the land enough to not have to worry about outside or cave monsters, construct your own darkroom for fighting when you please, complete with obstacles and a monster delivery system
(got really inspired by writing this... I'm gonna go play now :smile.gif:
you wake up on an abandoned planet, and you think the trees put you there.
Haha, I love this... I had a mental picture of a guy running through a forest screaming at all the trees and destroying every tree except the one housing his treehouse...

Goals-
-have small Zen gardens
