When you first spawn in survival mode, you are dumped in the middle of the world with no items, an night is already approaching fast. How you spend those first few moments are a critical time in your game, and could drastically shape your future for the better. Here is how I approach my first moments in Minecraft Xbox 360 edition...
As soon as you spawn, take only a few seconds to check out your surroundings. Remember, time is of the essence! Find the nearest tree, (Lets just say is is an oak tree, nice and medium sized.) and run to it. Punch it, and take down the whole tree. Make Wooden planks, a Crafting Table, and four sticks. If there is not a visible source of stone, dig down until you reach stone. Place your table, and make one wooden pickax. Mine stone until the pick breaks, and dig your way out of the hole. You will be left with two sticks, planks, and 60 pieces of Cobblestone. Use the planks you have left to make sticks, and make a full set of stone tools, minus the stone hoe. You won't need that until later. Now it is time to get wool! If you are quick, by the time you have all your stone tools, it should be getting close to noon. Now you have loads of time to hunt, get a bed, and be ready for your second day in survival, without ever having to use wooden tools! I hoped this helped, and thanks for reading!
The first night is easy as hell, as long as you don't just wander around aimlessly. Not to mention there are already like 5,000,000 "how to survive first night" guides out there better than this one.
I mine 17 cobblestone, enough for a furnace and all stone tools except a hoe, then use the remnants of the wood pickaxe to start my first charcoal. Unless I find coal while digging my first cobblestone, in which case the wooden pick is probably going to be thrown away.

I used to have a good signature, but it got nerfed.
I always spend the first few minutes doing the same thing, unless I spawn next to a village or something.
1. Punch 5 logs from the nearest tree.
2. Turn all of the logs into planks. Place four planks in my inventory, then turn the rest into a crafting table and sticks.
3. If there is any exposed stone close by, go to that and place the crafting table down next to it. Otherwise I'll dig straight down 3-4 blocks into the dirt and find stone that way.
4. Craft a wooden pickaxe. Mine three blocks of cobble and make a stone pickaxe.
5. Collect about 30 cobblestone, and any coal I might come across.
6. Craft another stone pick, a stone sword, stone shovel, stone axe, and two furnaces.
7. Grab the crafting bench and get moving. As soon as I find some animals, I'll use the remaining wooden plank and wooden pick as fuel to cook a couple of pieces of food while I collect some wood nearby. After that, I'm pretty well prepared to explore so I just do whatever I feel like doing.

Sometimes I just mine 17 blocks and use the rest of the pick to smelt coal, but I found that if you just use up the whole pickax and get 60 blocks of cobblestone, then after you use up the stone tools, you have back up stone. Like if I used up my sword hunting animals, and night was approaching, I could place my table, and get another stone sword fast. No hassle.

Yes, but that's another 48.375 seconds where you could be doing other things. If you are going for maximum time saved, stone tools on 17 cobble is the best. Any time saved by making a stone pick earlier is lost by opening the crafting table again to make the other tools.
Another thing you could do is go for wooden pick after the third log, then finish the tree after you get a stone axe.

True, if your saving time, go for 17, and if you are going for "in case of emergency" go for 60. I suppose there would be time for mining the extra cobblestone later... It is all about your spawn point and what you want out of your game I suppose...
THE SKELETONS !!!!!!!!!!!!! THE ENDERMAN !!!!!!!!!!!! NO DIRT FOR YOU
Skeletons? 10 dirt blocks... Use 6 blocks for the column, the other 3 to make a 2x2 floor at the top, last one to block its view, it cant see you. 10 dirt blocks is also not a limit, you can column up high enough. Next!

Endermen... don't look at it? Duh!
Why would you pillar up and spend 10 minutes doing nothing when you can dig out a room underground and actually get things done for the night?
Theres a lot of stuff you can do in a column, like crafting, smelting, etc. A column is a last resort safe spot, not the best option. The point of my argument is not that columns are good but that the first night is not such a dramatic nightmare as OP puts it.
Personally I don't hide in neither a column, a cave or a dirt hut. I rather kill the mobs at night and keep doing my thing.
For players who don't have as much experience, digging a hole for the night and getting stuff mined up is a good plan. Especially if you don't have a bed, but if you get seventeen blocks of cobblestone and get stone weapons, you could also just run around killing things. Either way, it is still a super fun experience. Yesterday I was going after a pig at the top of a hill, and when I went down the other side, I was greeted by two Creepers, two Endermen, a Spider, and four Zombies. Needless to say, I RAN AWAY!
You don't need a bed or shelter. For the first night I either just run about killing stuff with my stone/iron sword, or I'm underground and mining for things.

Personally I prefer to dig into a hole (preferably into the side of a hill), then make a stone pick and start staircase mining down to bedrock. (Even if you don't mine, you don't have the risk of accidentally walking off of the pillar.) As long as you find wood, stone, and have some food, there is no hurry.
After the 1st night, you should spend the day outside and the night cave mining, that way you should be able to find ores quickly.

Yes, it is a bit of a rush, but once you are done, you have loads of time for hunting, and scoping out the area for a place to build a house.

If you didn't find any coal while mining cobblestone then just make charcoal for torches.
Also I would make stone tools as soon as I had enough cobblestone.
Just testing.
