Because I'm honestly curious. This has been a very controversial change, and there's a lot of people both against and in support of it. Now I understand the people whose attitude is "Notch can do what he wants, get over it", whether I agree with them or not - but there are others. A number of people have made the claim that - because it is called a bug - removing water elevators will improve the entire game, even for those people who never used or saw one. So I'd like to know how that works.
If you have a different answer than those above, post it.
However, note that the following answers are already in there:
* "It's a glitch! Glitches are bad! Inherently!" - This is a subset of Option #4 - "I think this will magically improve unrelated parts of the game, somehow." I'm a programmer, I know how glitches work. And they are not magical gremlins that scamper around causing trouble in other parts of the program. The water elevator thing is not even properly a bug, it's a variable which is being adjusted.
* "Minecraft is supposed to be realistic!" - This is a subset of Option #2 - "The knowledge that other people build them causes me distress." Since a water elevator is not something you could make by accident, you don't even have to see one if you simply refrain from building it.
Yes, this post is a bit sarcastic. But I actually am curious - enlighten me!
I voted for the SMP choice. It only serves as another needless way to lag already unstable servers. Now, keep in mind, this doesn't anger me or anything (and thanks for keeping your poll options non-sarcastic in any way :tongue.gif: ), but this is a relevant factor as to why this, and any other bug/glitch should be removed.
You're right, in that water elevators don't affect my single player game. I never use them, because they're bugs. Glitches. But in SMP, should they exist on the server I'm on, it affects not only my game, but everyone's. It's needless lag. It's not like Notch hasn't already provided a means of vertical transport, via, oh I dunno, ladders?
And as far as single player goes, the issue concerning boat speed going up waterfalls could help boat performance in numerous situations, such as traversing a river area and not wanting to fly off in the air with the slightest vertical bump up a one-block increment, or smoothing boat performance in MP overall (which if you've ever been in a boat in SMP you know they need all the help they can get). After all, from the current listing, he's only changing the speed of the boat rise, not removing it.
And the issue concerning the weird water-through-block corners thing is just a bug, plain and simple. It is a technical deficiency of the game right now. While you can argue to some degree the boat movement up waterfalls could be considered something of a feature (if only to navigate what might someday be actual rivers in the game), exploiting the game's inability to properly recognize block placements is no where near the same.
It's like knowing full well that sand falls in MC, but building your home in a beach cave where sand is naturally floating on the ceiling, and never expecting that sand to ever fall one day. You can't exploit a problem within the game without expecting it to be fixed one day.
I'm hardly apoplectic about this. It's a mild irritant, and I'll update anyway. But seeing as Notch bases a lot of his descisions on community feedback, it makes sense to complain about changes I dislike.
The other thing is that it isn't/ wasn't a bug, it was Minecraft physics being Minecraft physics. Built a bridge lately? Don't get used to it, unsupported blocks are unrealistic and thus a bug.
I just don't see the reasoning behind it. It doesn't negatively impact any part of the game, there isn't a substitute that's been introduced or was already present, they're incredibly useful and they allow greater creativity, as in waterslides and other mechanisms.
A lot of my irritation depends on exactly how much it's nerfed, but I think it's a pretty odd thing to do.
Maybe Mojang has something in mind for an elevator? Maybe the pistons he's adding will be able to catapult a boat just as far/fast?
While Mojang can see then "To add to minecraft:" list, we can't, while I think people should stop bitching about a bug being fixed (even a useful one such as this, however, it may cause some water physics fixes other than this simply because of how he's changing it) we should all really reserve our judgement for 1) When we actually see whats nerfed and how badly and 2) whether notch adds a system that provides similar functionality to water elevators.
If you've lost hours of work because of it? Well, it's not the first and probably not the last time this has happened to people in Minecraft, you know...Never base your builds off anything made with a glitch unless it's easily fixed if that glitch is repaired.
To answer the poll: It doesn't improve the game for me, except possibly the SMP option (Waterfalls look good, but seeing a boat going up them is a bit odd), but the forums? Well, once the initial "WAH WAH WAH MY STUFF DOESN'T WORK BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHAT BETA MEANS IN THE SOFTWARE WORLD!!!" dies down, it'll improve that as people will be looking into every system they can and finding new ways of doing things in Minecraft.
Notch on his twitter: "bugs that feel wrong get fixed"
Do not get attached to your saves, seriously, stuff like this has happened before, if there's something you love and really want to build...Wait for release.
Well, I personally don't think it's a bug so much as a balancing issue. Notch thinks that boats should not float up so fast, thus they will not float up so fast. It's not like it will be impossible to ascend using boats, just some things that already used previous values will need adjustment.
Also, lol at the weighted poll. I voted all of them just because, but a real reason would be "I support Notch's balancing decision."
you should've added an "indifferent" option, cause' that's how i feel. :cool.gif:

i don't use glitched boosters or water elevators on any of my worlds or on my server so i really dont care that notch is fixing these bugs (i kinda like it actually...)

Exactly this.
An incredibly useful feature nerfed because it was unintended.

I see this comment a lot, but what people are doing here, is interpretting themselves as to what's a bug or not. The reality is, if the developer himself states it's a bug, then guess what? It's a bug.
I choose the option of how it has made my game experience less fun.
Seeing as the only way to get my castle is by water elevator, guess i will now need to sprout wings to fly up to my castle. Seeing is on a slide of a cliff and not gradual cliff either.

IAWTP.
The primary reason I didn't use glitch boosters, water ladders/elevators and bouncing sand/gravel was because they were glitches and would require reworking when fixed. I do not envy people who used those systems extensively. Have fun redoing your minecart stations and upward transport systems, and disabling your water faucets I guess. At least water faucets will probably be possible with pistons. :sad.gif:
I learned not to get attached to glitches many years ago, on a completely different game.

Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. (Source)
Anything built within Minecraft, using only Minecraft, without using bugs, is legit.
If you don't want to build mob traps, that's fine. Just don't tell us it's cheating.
I always assumed it was intended. It made sense - climbing up huge towers and down mineshafts on ladders is dull. Boatavators are fast, and require work to create. Working to increase speed of transport and thus reduce dull transit time seems to fit in fine with "the minecraft way" as it were.
If it was the case that sitting in a boat and then clicking on a sheep sent you rocketing skywards then I wouldn't mind this at all.
1) Somehow I doubt this.
2) But elevators are LESS work! All you have to do is sit in the boat!
I've built a couple boat-avators myself, but I don't mind seeing them go. They just don't make sense! When Notch added powered tracks, I tore up my glitch boosters and used up all my gold. When boat-avators go, I'll see how the update really affected them, and then build around.

That's even more ridiculous than dousing a boat in water and expecting it to fly. You should consider stopping before you make yourself look even sillier.
And that would be absolutely fine - if 1.6 added pistons. It seems pretty silly to remove something before there's an alternative, hmm? Glitch boosters are only now being removed (quite rightly) and we've already got powered rails.
As I've stated already, this was never a glitch, it was a quirk of the minecraft physics engine. We all know how unrealistic it is, and some assuming that boatavators were somewhat intentional - as I did - seems perfectly fair.
tl;dr Travelling large distances on ladders is dull. Updates ought reduce dullness
Yeah, it was relatively unknown before now that it was actually a glitch, but I think that's because its one of those types of glitches where you think "How the hell did they not see this?"
And for a replacement? Sure, there's not one yet...But modders will fix that, if not Notch/Jeb.
