Hatches would line up with top layer of a block and open downward instead of the bottom layer and open upward thus making you able to walk on them as a flat surface, and they double has a ladder due to you needing to remove a ladder to place it.
As hatches have holes in them it wouldn't be to farfetched to have them be climbable too.
Edit:
Hatches also maybe place so they line up with bottom layer and open upward (as they currently are) for when they are used for roofs such as for attics aswell as double as a ladder.

Edit:
To avoid ruining mob and player traps they could could only be climbable if there is a ladder above or below it.

Reduce the hit box of the hatches (AKA reduce the size to = ladders) and they should anchor to the edge of the block that the player is closest to, like doors.
You could try using them in a different manner that would work better. There's a trapdoor tutorial thread floating around here with a nifty video you might like.

No I meant this as Notch could do this instead and he would change it in the next update im hoping for him to see this if it get popular.
not climbable but placeable on Top of a 1 block hole would be nice.. then you wouldnt have to exploit a bug by closing the t-door onto yourself to get off a ladder

Funny, I can place them on top (not in, on Top) of a 1x1 hole, climb up a ladder, stand on the ladder, and jump out. No glitch needed.
If you're placing the hatch down in the hole, then yeah, you can't climb out because you're standing 2 down from the edge of the hole.
I bet you could still do it if you made the hatch open on the correct side, and then jump from the ladder to the side of the open hatch.
But placing the hatch on top of the hole seems to work better.
Hell, you can just climb out no problem if you place the ladder opposite where the door hinges.
Right, der. The climb-on-ladder-then-jump-out is actually what works if you put the hatch down in the hole. With the hatch on top of the hole, the ladder can go all the way up.
I think this would be awesome. At first I was thinking make a shaft with hatch ladders, but closing them wouldn't do any more good than closing the top one.

I make mod videos! Ask me and I'll make one for you!
I make a new world, and put hatches on top of my spawning point, caves under that, and gonna make a base there.
Now I'm interested how it is about (like doors, you need to put them in from outside, to make more secure inside)
I put the hatch in from outside, but i like it to be on top, not one block down.
How do i think there, is it better to put that in from below, think that way the hatch gonna be on top.
Any problems with mobs that way ?
Picture, don't see the right side, i haven't time to fix anything in that new world. maybe no problem, i gonna put in that hatch from below instead and all is fine.
I have a ladder up to that hatch, and easy going up thru , but i have to jump the last bit , one block up, no problem with that, only esthetic i like the hatch to be on top.
Um can you speak proper English?? I had a hard time reading that because i had to try and make it make sense.
While still really cool, hatches do need some improving.
I think an open hatch should have a reduced hitbox or imbed itself a little into its anchor block. It's a little hard to descend into a hole with both the hatch and a ladder in the way. I agree that hatches should be climbable, but only if there's a ladder under it.
The main fix I think they need is their placement. They should anchor to the edge of the block that the player is closest to, like doors. This would allow for hatches that open upwards and trapdoors that open downwards. Maybe even half-doors too.
That would be awesome. I can't really make traps when the hatches pop up like they do.
But since people have already made things with the current hatches, what if there were iron hatches that opened downwards in addition to the current hatches?
The only real problem with downwards-opening hatches is that they would be tricky to power with redstone.
As hatches have holes in them it wouldn't be to farfetched to have them be climbable too.

Then it would be dependent on which way your placing them like doors are.

Doors work the same way, you can place it on any side of a block as long as you're facing it.
If you place a hatch on a block from the bottom, it goes on the bottom, and if you place one from the top, it goes on the top. Or vice versa.
But since people have already made things with the current hatches, what if there were iron hatches that opened downwards in addition to the current hatches?

Really this is proper English to you:
"I make a new world, and put hatches on top of my spawning point, caves under that, and gonna make a base there."
This makes more sense in my opinion:
I made a new world and I put a hatch on top of my spawning point, there is a cave under it and im going to make it my base.
@Failcrafter: gave a good idea and saying its only climbable if there is a ladder underneath/above.
Not really aslong as the block the henge it connected to is powered by redstone it will be fine just like pressure plates.
