the "zz oh well" is sucking it up, obviously. i dont see how that was a necessary addition to your post.
It wasn't directed at you really, just people in general, why they make such a big deal out of glitches when they should know better then that they won't get fixed. Your post pretty much illustrated my point, you got used to them being there, it's the main reason i tended to avoid using them myself.
It's the same reason i don't use mob traps, water elevators, or anything else that relies on "wonky" seeming game manipulation. No offense. I'd probably only use such things for puzzle maps or other little "what creative things can we do" maps.
I just made a ramp up from my mine (level 10) to the "surface" about level 75 or so due to my base being a bit above sea level, inside a mountain). I found that you could get up in decent time like so:
(overhead view, each block is actually a rise)
(etc)
= normal
= booster, powered with a redstone torch on the wall next to the ramp
Each section is 5 pieces long and contains 2 boosters and 3 regular tracks. 65 squares up means I had 13 sections, or 26 booster tracks. That's 26 gold for a simple system that gets me out of my mine every time without fail.
What else could I have made out of that 26 gold? 2 gold blocks, a watch, and maybe a couple crappy shovels?
For lack of better statement, you shouldn't be assuming in the first place that powered rails will be as strong as boosters. If they were, what point would there be to removing boosters in the first place short of giving them a better visual flair. I am fully expecting to have to plan my tracks a bit better to get up slopes, I'd be rather surprised if i could use a few pieces of track and go straight vertical up a mine shaft.
So you think the game would be more fun with fewer useful or cost-effective mechanics, got it.
Maybe all you need to be happy is three more different colors of cake.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Well, after enjoying Minecraft for a long time I finally broke down and contributed back: exactly one adventure map. TRY IT NOW! YAY! Fall of Kingdoms

I never said they wouldn't be useful, despite your condescending attitude. They just won't be as powerful as you are used to, or want. I'm sure myself and quite a few other people will make just as much use out of powered tracks or any other mechanic with a little more effort then you apparently want to put into it.
Conventional boosters (magnetic, glitch, whatever ya call em) will still be in the game right? Just toned down to not result in extreme velocities, right?
"* Fixed minecarts next to each other causing extreme velocities (sorry!)"
Who cares? When Pistons are out, use those are boosters instead. Will probably work just fine.
If Notch has put a ceiling on rail speed, (which it sounds as though he has) then using pistons won't help you. Pistons also won't help you on upward slopes, because they can't be placed on a 45 degree angle.

Minecarts already have a limited speed. the issue has to do with how much momentum the carts get at once. With the glitch, they get a lot of momentum in a short distance, and the powered rails have that momentum spread out.

Pistons would push the top half of the player, so the momentum given would not need to be angled.
From my changelist: "* Fixed minecarts next to each other causing extreme velocities (sorry!)"
Well, good game everyone. Guess we won't be seeing any amazing roller coasters or anything like that anymore. It's too expensive to make powered rails - not enough gold found.
Bummer.
If you are making roller coasters, why don't you just use an inv editor?

There are many reasons not to. A person may not trust downloads or may be incapable of doing so, or may not have the right computer specs, or simply may prefer gathering resources and building legitimately (note: NOT legitly. Legitly is not a word), to name a few.

It's not clear exactly what he did, but it's probably safe to say they won't be useful anymore.
So does this mean boosters wont work at all, Or just be slower (said EXTREME velocities) (even though the change log also said boosters are speedier.)?
Or just some boosters, such as the c-booster, where all carts try to take up the same space at the same time, and boost carts to max speed instantly.

We won't know until either Notch explains it himself, or the update comes out (only a few days away). Be patient.

That used the glitch to an extreme like no other booster, so yeah - it won't work like that anymore.

Did you know I write Science Fiction? Well I do. Check it out at http://planetretcon.com/books/

Again, STFU and get to work.
