From my changelist: "* Fixed minecarts next to each other causing extreme velocities (sorry!)"
Well, good game everyone. Guess we won't be seeing any amazing roller coasters or anything like that anymore. It's too expensive to make powered rails - not enough gold found.
I'm ok with powered rails - finally something to use my gold on etc, but I think the propulsion level should be adjustable like repeaters - maybe by right clicking or by being amplified by # of red stone torches / powered blocks adjacent to the block with the rails.
In any case, I am sure there will be a large backlash, so stay tuned on if the bug fix remains.

What? So when pigs get hit by lighting, they suddenly develop into bipeds and receive brown leather skirts and golden swords from nowhere?
I stick with Piston as booster when they come out, thank you very much.
So, you're sitting in a minecart (on some tracks), with a piston behind you ready to go. Will the piston:[*:3ajr5q40]Be placed level with the minecart, so that trashes all of the track in front of the piston; or
[*:3ajr5q40]Be placed one block higher, so that it punches you in the back of the head without moving the minecart
Not sure which method you're planning to stick with...
I don't like this. Actually, I hate this. Now I'm trying to understand how am I supposed to rebuild my automated station. In my station, the minecart comes when I press the pressure plate, stops and just when I get in it starts to move again. How am I supposed to do that with Powered Rails? And in my station I got a red torch to show minecart status: on - it's ready and off - not ready. Using Detector Rails the minecart have to stay on it so it sends a ON signal. If the minecart is on the Detector Rail, how am I supposed to make it move when I want to?

Seriously, this makes me sad.
You can easily replace everything you have with powered boosters. You can have a cart on both a powered booster and detector rail, just takes some configuration with momentum.

Compare that with a Piston. 1 Redstone, 6 or 7 iron (depending on the final recipy), one button, 2 blocks of any kind (dirt will already do it). Maybe 3 Redstone if you want to get sure. You press the button and get kicked out of the station in your cart. (Before that, we needed at least 11 iron and 1 stick for a booster. With that kind of booster, we need 6 iron, 6 gold, 3 sticks, at least 12 restone, a pressureplate,...)

Number 2? When you're in the cart, the piston pushes you AND the cart as both together, you're two bocks high?
You're 2 blocks high, but the minecart is only 1 block high.
Think of it like this:
The piston ( ) extends and punches you ( ) in the head, but it's too high to touch the minecart ( ) so the minecart doesn't move. You could connect the piston up to a timer and build yourself an automatic head punching machine, where you could sit at the same spot (in your minecart) and get punched in the head all day...

No, no, no. You guys don't understand. I like the aesthetics of my station. I know I can make it simpler. Like that one. But I want it really looks like a real station. The minecart should come, stops and then go. I don't want to have to get in the minecart and press a button to make it move. And I don't want to have a minecart waiting for me on the tracks too when I get to the station.

Before i'd finished reading your post, i'd visualised the solution. Whatever your question, redstone combined with detector/booster rails is your answer.
Maybe if pistons work as a reliable booster, will I be able to rebuild my much-loved functionality. I have my cart wait on a stone plate, so all I have to do is get in to get sent on my way by a released booster cart. Without the 'glitch', there is no way to repeat that ability.
Also, Notch -really- needs to fix detector rails to work as stone plates instead of wood; there's no point in a 'detector' that can't tell the difference between a full and empty cart.
Also also, give empty carts the same momentum as full ones, once detector plates are fixed.

I still think rollercoasters will be cool - now, they'll just obey laws of gravity.
@Sir Zirra
I like your idea about adjustable propulsion.
Its about time.
It actually does make total sense. I have 3 double chests full of redstone and yet only 4 stacks of gold bars.

That is actually EASIER to do with powered rails. Check out http://youtube.com/pearsquirrel.

Piston boosters are extremely weak.
You're 2 blocks high, but the minecart is only 1 block high.

Hmmm, nothing about interita or momentum. Velocity was always capped at 8m/s anyway wasn't it?
