Think about it, we already have pirated versions of the game, how hard would it be for them to pirate a DLC, or just make an exact replica of it?
1. People who pirate stuff usually buy it. Its a known fact.
2. Making an exact replica of it and posting it for free is illegal? (Don't quote me on this) I'm a dumb 12yr old :sad.gif:
Piracy ain't against the law :3, just sharing. And, saying DLC's won't work is like saying minecraft won't work. There is people that will buy it. And people who won't. Hopefully the DLC's would work in multiplayer to. Which means that many people would buy it simply for that reason.
People will buy it, and i think you misunderstand DLC's, not like you buy one item or something, like a whole new set of items for $1, or the Aether for 5 bucks.
1. People who pirate stuff usually buy it. Its a known fact.
Nope - I pirated Fallout3 GOTY, AvP 2010 and Doom3 (to name the recent ones) which I didn't buy. There were some others I did to, but those were over a decade ago or I didn't like them
(And sometimes, I pirate games I already own - just to get rid of the censorship due living in germany.)
But I would say, DLCs aren't working as it might cause problems with SMP - what if you join without a DLC onto a server, which has it? Or the other way around? Both doesn't work well. So, it's more likely there won't be any pay-DLC (unless it is REALLY huge and can be seen as a full addon instead)
Ah hypocrisy at it's finest. Most people who call out other people on piracy, probably have some illegal stuff on their pc. But their egos are so big and anonimity rules so much that they'll never admit it.
Even most videos on youporn are pirated copies... Just sayin'
This is what always happens, if you post a topic with even the word "Piracy" in it, people blow it out of propotion. Now, lets get back to the topic. I personally think DLCs for a cube-based moddable sandbox game would be silly. I consider mods to be somewhat like DLC.
1. People who pirate stuff usually buy it. Its a known fact.
People who claim something is "a known fact" often make up those facts. It is a known fact.
Heinlein once said "If it cannot be expressed in numbers, it is opinion, not fact". So I'd be eager to see the numbers that support your assertion - especially since it flies in the face of common sense.
You're basically saying "people who steal something usually decide to pay for what they've already successfully taken". I think there's a broad body of study in criminal psychology that indicates to the contrary.

Personally, I will only buy expansion pack sized downloadable content. I'm not paying for a few blocks and some mobs. I want LOADS of content.
Other wise I'm pirating.
I think this is why most DLC will be free and small (similiar to what we have now), even to the wretched retail buyers (who will likely provide monetary support far greater than any to date). Bigger expansions and game mode add-ons will likely cost beta and retail buyers. And then there is Minecraft II, where everyone will have to re-up on the ante and pay for (I'm sure the suits are wringing their filthy little hands over this one allready).
People already pirate books, movies, video games, and the DLC for those video games. Yet somehow the respective industries continue to exist.
I don't think your premises support your conclusion. The availability of pirated content does not change many people's beliefs that they should pay for software.
The aether(If it ever shows up) will make a great DLC...maybe because I bought it in alpha,
Mostly really cool, new dimensions. Or perhaps something like, adventure craft.

1. It really depends what you're talking about. In Minecraft's case, most players wind up buying it because its relatively cheap, and updates make pirated versions woefully inadequate.
2. Yeah, its illegal if its an exact replica.

Yes #2 is illegal, piracy and against the law.
Legally, piracy is not illegal. just sharing.

Actually, it is illegal. Its just easier to prosecute the person sharing the pirated material than it is to prosecute someone who downloaded it.

DLC's wouldn't work for the simple reason that the game is so easy to make mods for. Why download some DLC when you can just get a boatload of great mods for free?
Plus if he did DLC's you'd have issues like people accusing you of stealing code from DLC's for your mods. Or supposing someone writes a piece of content that is pretty much exactly like the DLC but completely their own code? Or maybe someone wants to mod a DLC but it involves including all/most of the class files for that specific piece of content?
Actually, it is illegal. Its just easier to prosecute the person sharing the pirated material than it is to prosecute someone who downloaded it.
I would like to see the law on that please. should be easy if it exists. (United States)
Look up "Digital Millenium Copyright ACt" or DMCA for starters. You may also want to look into the "No Electronic Theft" or NET act, both of which were signed into law by President Clinton in 1997-1998.
These are not new laws.
Regardless of whether or not piracy actually has a measurable impact on revenues, the continued activity gives publishers an excuse to pass those costs onto legitimate buyers. Most of you may be too young to remember when a new game from Electronic Arts cost $10, but that's not really that long ago. The price of games has jumped from around $30 to more than $60 in the last decade - and publishers use the rampant spread of piracy to justify the price hikes.
The people who pirates really hurt are the legitmate purchasers of software - the people who subsidize the development of products, the people who make the publishers successful. The more a game is pirated, the less likely it is that publishers will follow up with decent products.

Oh, and whining beta players. GO ALPHA!
Self-potato. That is all.

I FREAKING HATE that thing!
Stupid meme. I like most memes, but this one is NOT one of those.
Anyway, DLC tend to suck, OP.
