I'm curious to see how other peeps have altered the environment around them to suit their survival needs. If you want take a look at what the land was like, just select the recreate world option and swoop on over to the spot where your house was built. If you want a better view in your screenshot, you can disable the HUD with F1.
Here's my contribution. Feel free to say how your world developed the way it did as well.
This is what the area where I built my main base looks like before (originally created using the seed -123775873255737467 in 1.5.1; 1.6.4 also works except for a lack of lakes in the nearby desert):
Now (relatively recent screenshots; I'm currently over 2,500 blocks away from my main base so while I could pillar up and get an overhead I don't want to return just to do that):
Also, I found a screenshot of one of my secondary bases and made a near-exact before and after comparison with it; I've built a total of 8 bases in addition to my main base, with an underground rail system connecting them together, all more or less like this, some partially buried in a hill (among other changes, you can see I planted more trees to the left, the same is true for around my main base; I'm not the "kill all the trees!" type of person, I even replant the tall grass that many people hate):
Other than that, the terrain is mostly unaltered aside from cobblestone pillars with torches dotting the landscape wherever I left off from caving sessions, and of course virtually every cave underground has been lit up and mined out - in an area stretching 4,000 blocks long and up to 2,500 blocks wide; here is a nighttime view of a small (about 600x700 blocks) part of my world showing hundreds of lit-up cave entrances (you can see individual torches as yellow dots; the secondary base shown above is just below the center in the middle); the second and third images show only lit-up caves and all caves respectively, showing that I really am not kidding about exploring virtually every cave; I've used enough torches (over 150,000) to light up the entire surface (about 30,000 chunks in all*) enough to prevent mob spawning:
*This also puts the amount of ores I've mined into perspective, I've averaged only about 4.8 iron ore per chunk, only about 6.3 percent of all iron ore, and only about 0.117 diamond ore per chunk, about 3.7% of all diamond ore; according to MCEdit the whole world still contains about 2.3 million iron ore and 90,000 diamond ore (actual percentages are a bit higher since there is a 10 chunk border of unexplored chunks around the edge, though as the world gets bigger that becomes less significant).
I'm too lazy to actually do (maybe I should say build, I don't know.) something in minecraft. sometimes I do challenges, like no armor and no enchantments, then I beat the dragon and never play on that world again. I just can't get into minecraft anymore for some reason. if I play with default world generator, it's too boring, if I play with a preset, it feels tainted.
1/4 a desert is less deserted, as it's on the edge of my home
A village has a wall made of cacti, soon to be cobble.
About 5 Mineshafts are partially looted
Tons of random holes in the ground from mining, but most closer to home.
Random strings of torches that go on for thousands of blocks, all stemming from home, from my exploration.

My avatar-Madison Gotha. She knows various weapons, she's a mage/sage, and is somewhat immortal. Madison has the capability of taming and communicating monsters, a genetic trait passed down by her father. 26 physically, 1400-something mentally, and a Lofty Peakian/Zenithian mix. Doesn't really like being called an elf and hates being called human..
I might be Moderator, but don't bother treating me too special. And don't make tons of Ban Hammer jokes, please. Also, I'm an Off-Topic only Mod. Don't ask me to lock a thread or something if it's not in the off-topic
The first set of pictures were taken from the lighthouse point of view. I obtained the before pictures by getting the world seed and creating a separate creative world to take screenshots.
The build farthest to the right on the after picture is my unfinished chapel to the Holy Chicken God. I've been procrastinating for the longest time on picking that project up, but I always get sidetracked.
The next set of pictures are from my house point of view.
Seeing the my world ended up reminds me that I am a failure. War, disease, pollution. I know of nothing that can save it now. They talk of moving down a planet, but who knows if they'll succeed? What am I supposed to do?
