Hello, Forum community! I've been trying to get into building better structures, and I was wondering how you guys give your builds more depth, i'm a noob at building, and i was hoping you guys could help, thanks!
Experiment with differently shaped building structures. Squares and boxes get boring after a while. Try a house with small rooms to the sides and above the main floor.
Also try making the walls and ceilings two blocks wide/tall instead of one. This allows for decoration inside and out and allows for lights to be placed on the ceiling without them lighting up unwanted areas of your top floor(s). I know it uses more resources, but it looks really good.
Finally try making a house or building with a theme or different style of architecture. I have a home base in my Survival world in a Mesa biome, so i made my house look like a pueblo house (pictured); its made from clay, sandstone, and wooden logs and come cacti for decoration. Dont be afraid to build big!

In addition to this, you can use glowstone and Redstone Lamps in the floor if it only really suits the theme of the floor (like say if used purposely). You an things like Carpets and Bushes if you're going to put glowstone/lamps in the floors: this will serve as a functional light without being visible.
You may want to look at different solid colors. You can create depth with colors and patterns to make visual illusion of depth. Stairs and Half-Slabs are great ways (as Aeroisticon already said) to add depth to the build and can be used in different ways. I am quite bad at adding depth to my builds but those suggestions help alot. Play around with it to see what you like, and figure out what works and what does not.
You may want to play with something called "Material Grain". It's basically taking the texture of of a block and using to make something look good. Some examples include:
Using Solid Colors as "wall" blocks and things like tree blocks (not planks) for "edges" (more for interior stuff).
Using tree blocks (not planks) on the edges of a door to make them look taller than they really are.
Using half slabs to line the bottom and top of windows (2x3 minimum) to make windows look longer.
Using half slabs as baseboards
Using a tiling effect (stone slab and quartz slab for example) to make floors look pretty cool.
Using things like quartz pillar's natural lines to make paths in the floor.

Make decorative use of stairs and half slabs. Don't be afraid to make windows very large. A good way to practice is take an image of an ornate building and try to recreate every detail as much as possible. You'll be surprised at the different ways you can use the blocks to make some really nice looking things.

I'd suggest maybe since you're fairly new to focus on making smaller builds with a lot of detail. Bigger builds take more effort to make them look "natural". (And building materials!)
