i like single player better most of the time...sometimes i run my own private server to use some bukkit mods :biggrin.gif:
When in singleplayer i always take on a sort of "castaway" persona...who needs other people when you can hold decent conversations with sheep!

Anyone can fly. The secret is to throw yourself at the ground and miss.
In my opinion Minecraft is extremely single player oriented game. To me multiplayer wouldn't give anything, so I stay out of it. For me aloneliness is the essence of Minecraft. Just me and my imagination.
I do understand some aspects of Minecraft's multiplay. Things like economy, joint building operations and hanging out with friends. But PvP is just something I don't get. Fighting in general is so crappy (chop chop chop) in Minecraft it just don't make any sense to add a lag and swarming caffeine addicted teenagers into it. I mean there a lot better games for PvP matches. A lot better.
But that's me.
Games like Runescape or WoW?
I honestly I agree with you on the PvP part.
I am a server co-admin (not the server owner)
In the server i played, I got lots of requests from the users. Majority of them are asking for stuff where you can easily obtainable and I am not really happy about that.
I hosted another private server with some of the better players and we work out really nicely, no asking for stuff, no griefing, we help each others. We make buildings with the same theme & sizes, we get to explore dungeons together, we do Lets Play together... All these tasks are not enjoyable in the public server I used to played.
Playing alone in SSP is nice when you can have the world in your hand and it is comparable less bug as compared to SMP. You can decide what to do with which area without someone else build a 30 blocks high wall during your sleep (in real life).
However, having the game played in SMP had the fun part in it when you meet with the right people. I think until Notch and his team fixed the gap between SMP and SSP I will be constantly jumping from SSP to SMP and vice versa.
I play SMP on a server whitelisted to members of our rather small clan (and spouses). Adds a bit of chatting to the mining, and taking tourist tours to see the creations of you friends. Also, one of the clan has taken to sneak build additions to other peoples work in a very tasteful, yet playful way. I have not been on SSP since I started MP, as the social aspect is a nice addition, and being with friends it carries none of the drawbacks.
SMP, definitely. Whether I'm on my server alone, or various family members are poking in, both suit me fine. I find it better to play alone on a server than to muck about in single player, that way I don't have to juggle multiple worlds. I just do what I do and if others are on then I have additional goals I can manage such as gathering the meat shields. More importantly to me though, is the ability to share my creations. I don't see much point in spending days or months even on something only you can really enjoy. Pictures can't always do your work justice, it's much better to have someone physically navigate through what you've done when you've really made something you're proud of.

And then it gets griefed.
I could have been more direct in my wording though I figured I would not need to. I specifically stated 'my server' and 'family members' as I only play multi in-home anymore. I have full control over the server and the activities of the players at all times, and if I didn't, they know that I know where they sleep.
That aside, of course, this is the internet. Shouldn't be trusting strangers in the first place.

You post too much, gordan.
But OT: Single player. Multiplayer is laggy as **** tied to a boulder no matter how fast my internet it, and I don't even want to get into server administrators.
Plus if you can put up with the part-time nature of servers, you aren't addicted enough.
I prefer SMP because I get to play with my friends. When I play SSP I feel like there's really no point since no one but me is going to see what I build.

So what your trying to say is, is that Minecraft should just be one giant server.
That would also prevent pirates.
I tend to switch between the two. SP I love for when I just want to zone out, build something simple in a new area I haven't explored and just basically relaxing.
MP is a bit more difficult, since you really need people with the same mindset as yourself for it to be enjoyable. (For me anyway) I've been on servers with those that constantly ask for things (as yuhhaur mentioned above). But I've also been on some great co-operative servers where everyone works on big projects, planning and designing, gather all the materials and seeing a completed project that you all made, well, that's the fun I get from MP.
I've only played single player but am interested in multi. However, I've been looking around and am trying to find a server with no PVP as if I want to play PVP I'll play Diablo 2 LOD and actually fight instead of CHOP/CHOP/CHOP Dead!
I'm more into the building aspect/mining/dugeon finding. I spend so much time building my houses/structures, I think I'd be really pissed and not want to play if I logged in to see something It took me 10 hours to build blown up with TNT or set on fire.
OT: If someone is looking for a builder on thier server, please email me: [email protected]!
single
because server version handles building things different
and lags reduce fun for me
depends on server though
but its fun to show your friends your creation too and build them together like in TS or Skype, but then its more "fun to play with friends" and not "fun to play minecraft with others"
Multiplayer on a server with a few mature players you can trust.
It's a lot more fun to help each other on bigger projects and to give guided tours like stated above by someone already. We do play on peacefull tho so we do not acidently hit someone when mining next to each other.
I run a multiplayer server and that's all I play. Only a few friends and I play and we're rarely on at the same time so it's practically the same as SSP, except for all the random lag and bugs.
I play smp a lot more than singleplayer because people can see my creations.. Smp also puts my two favorite things ever in one game: •minecraft •my friends
I prefer Single Player. The only lag is decided by me (for example, if I wanted to run "Nyan Cat: Omega Extended 3 1/2 Hours of Nyan Spledidness" in the background, against better judgement) and, for the most part, almost all the servers I've played on (and I usually stick around for a week+ and sometimes more if they're good) are full of a bunch of immature people spamming chat with stupid stuff (e.g. "trololo 69696969 lolololololol!!!!!!1!!!11!!1!!!!!") or cursing at people for no reason. It gets annoying. That's why I prefer to be perfectly sane and use SSP. The sheep are much more fun to talk to.
Me: Why, hello there, good sir!
: *gives me reverse crosseyed look* Baaaaa
Me: Oh, how you make me laugh, Mr. Sheep.
: 0.0..... baaaaa?
Me: Fine then! Be that way! I never liked you anyways. Be gone!

Honestly, being alone is much better, only griefers are Creepers.
