Just try hitting F2. Always work for me unless I'm zoomed in then I get an error but the game does not crash.
Yeah thanks. Wasn't asking that. I've explained several times in this thread that I know how to take screenshots. I was simply curious about the larger ones and trying to find out why they didn't work.

The huge screenshot function was removed in 1.5
This thread was made long before 1.5, so my question isn't really valid anymore. Not sure why somebody decided to necro it.

It makes like a compass for day and night I think.
Huh. I can't even take a ShiftF2 screenshot. I press Shift and F2, but it just takes a normal sized screenshot. I'm using a desktop computer, not a laptop, and a normal keyboard. I've done this before, but even trying this with a clean version of Minecraft won't fix things!

As stated in the previous posts: It was taken out in 1.5. This topic was made 2 months ago, and is no longer relevant.

Whoop! I actually suspected that, because I couldn't find the feature when looking through the code. I guess that just goes to show how inattentive I am. Luckily, I do have a backup from 1.4, though!

The problem wasn't solved in this post, but I do suspect it's caused by Minecraft's multicore threading (or lack thereof). I have an i7 processor, which is only as awesome as it should be when multicore threading works as it should. That's the only reasoning I can see to why some lesser rigs can handle it and mine can't.

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.

It dosnt take THAT much. It takes only about 10 seconds on my computer, it dosnt crash at all.
That begin said, its still better a normal screenshot- I see no point on this one.
