I'm watching spiders spawn on half blocks right now.
I've always known that mobs don't spawn on transparent blocks, but these spiders are. They're appearing on cobblestone half-blocks in this case. I tried glass, and they spawned on that too.
Skip to 00:38 to watch it spawn. That little room on the right has a cobble-half-block floor, and the dungeon has a cobble floor which I raised by 1 and put flowing water on it.
Anyone else ever witnessed this? Is a spawner capable of overriding the normal spawning rules?
And sorry for the awful framerate. I've got too much crap running right now.
Yeah. A spawner works that way. Mobs can pop up everywhere. They are even spawned in water. I can't see the spawner in the video so I can't be sure, but I have a feeling you have the room covered by water. You don't find it strange that mobs still spawn? :wink.gif:

Yes, spawners override normal spawning rules. They will spawn without any surface at all. Dungeons are 7x9, and you should give the spawner all that space for spawning.
Is a spawner capable of overriding the normal spawning rules?
In short, yes.
A spawner has a range of four blocks and it will create mobs at the same vertical height as the spawner provided there is space for its mob type to be generated and the light level within the spawning radius remains below seven.
Mob spawners make mobs in mid-air at the same height as the mob spawner block, as long as it's dark enough and there's space. You can fix your trap by making there be no 2x2 space in line with the monster spawner, but outside of your intended spawning area.

This dungeon was originally a 5x5, so I'll just enlarge it to a 9x9 and lower the floor back down. That should keep them inside.
