I SINCERELY APOLOGIZE FOR THIS WALL OF TEXT. READ IT IF YOU WISH, NO REAL WAY TO SUMMARIZE IT QUICKLY
I love "surviving" in minecraft, not that you actually ever really do that. I guess it is mainly the lack of resources in the early game that I love. You can't just say, hmm, I need some iron, I guess I'll go to my chest with 17 stacks of iron ingots and get some. I don't know why, but I love the feeling of fighting to carve a foothold. That doesn't really happen much in minecraft though- you can usually be pretty well set up a couple days in, once you've found a good cave system. So I had some ideas on how to enhance the survival aspect of minecraft.
Let me first establish that this shouldn't be part of vanilla minecraft. Hell no. It would kill everything else that is fun about the game. But maybe a mod or something in the future could do it, I don't know.
First, the most obvious thing to do is to add hunger. Simple really.
Second, make it so when you craft torches (done with two sticks not a coal and a stick) You have to light it using either a flint and steel or by placing it and using a stick on it (takes a long time to do it that way). This would make torches less overpowered.
Third, make block destruction very very very slow. Survival has no meaning if you can just dig a hidey-hole and last as long as you want. This would make time much more valuable and every block precious.
Fourth, Make monsters essentially unkillable in groups. An individual monster should be a tough fight that requires preparation. Monsters would have to spawn less densely for this to work obviously.
Fifth, you can't break blocks without tools except for things dug by shovels. This just makes more sense, IMO. You would have to be able to make flint tools for this to work though, but whatever.
Sixth, torches that don't stand up when placed. You have to fix a bracket, which takes time. However, torches held in your hand emit light. This way, when exploring dark areas, you can't just plonk down torches real quick and be fine. It would create more tension since you can't fight with a torch, so exploring dark areas would be freaky because you are torn between being able to react to a monster attack and being able to see the monsters.
Seventh, bows should not shoot rapid fire. You should have to hold down the mouse click to pull back the string, then release. The longer you pull, the more power the shot has. This way, bows are less overpowered, since they are not sniper machine guns, but realistic bows, that don't hit the same spot every time and take time to shoot.
Eighth, Animals should run away from you, and run quickly. You actually have to hunt them, they don't just come to you. A side part of this is that I think we should be fighting more "wild" animals, like deer or moose. And if you craft a skinning knife, you get a hide from the same animal that you get meat from. Sheep should stay the same, but drop meat as well. It makes no sense that a dead animal drops no meat.
Ninth, we need daytime enemies. The easiest thing to do would be hostile wild animals, like bears. That would be intimidating, beating back an enormous bear that could kill you in one swipe.
Tenth, the possibility of death from exposure. Maybe you would have to drink water as well as eat, and if you are in a desert and don't drink enough, you die very fast. If you are in a cold place, you need clothes (armor, or maybe just regular clothes made of wool). Rain and snow would intensify cold effects, and to dry off you need fire or sunlight.
Last, no more healing with food. Food would just be for hunger. Instead, your health will regenerate slowly over time if you bandage yourself, or you can heal instantly using very resource-intensive potions.
I see all of your points, *truthfully I did a rough skimming not and in-depth reading*
But I will have to disagree on some of your recommendations, because the game your trying to portray here isn't the minecraft I know . . . I could never associate all those features as good elements of game play. I would see them merely as chores.
But hey it's my opinion, I'm fairly certain once modding api is supported I'm sure you'll be able to find something that is just as you described, and can give you that kind of game play.
But as an official feature for the game I cannot see it happening.
PS: your description sounds a whole lot like Elder Scrolls, I'd say when the final Minecraft Comes out, you should get Skyrim and that might appease your extremist survival needs.

Absolutely agree. The game is too easy as it is. Struggling to surviving in a hostile world is fun. If you don't like it, go play sissy peaceful mode.

I think this should be in regular vanilla survival mode. I mean, it's called survival mode.

Same with this.

The rest would be neat in a mod, but probably not in the main game.
This game gets really easy really fast. I play on Hard and explore natural caves, which is pretty fun but its usually ages of no monsters then just one random creeper that explodes on you.
A Daytime aggressive mob would rock. I've taken to building my bases close to overhangs just to get some mob action during the daytime.
Zombies are so underpowered its not funny, they're about as threatening as a chicken. They should be able to break some blocks.
Mobs running away from you would be awesome :biggrin.gif: Especially if they were only spooked by footsteps, so you can shift-walk to stalk them.
Hopefully someone makes a much more intense survival-style mod.
I agree with some of your points, but not all of them. Currently, i think minecraft is pretty balanced, although things like animals walking straight to you and bows shooting rapid fire amek the game to easy. 'Oh! I'm on low health! Theres a pig over there!' *Goes and kills pig in 2 seconds* 'Yay! I'm now healed!' :/.
I see all of your points, *truthfully I did a rough skimming not and in-depth reading*

I agree with you that this would completely change the feel of minecraft, and that's the point. These things should never be added to vanilla, because it would ruin every other aspect of minecraft, but if you want to survive, this would be fun imo. I have tried elder scrolls (oblivion) and I actually hated it. Something about the way your character controls just bugged me, I couldn't get past it. Also, I think the simplicity and adaptability of minecraft is much better suited to a survival experience.
These ideas would be great! For a hardcore mode for Minecraft. Yes, the adventure/survival portion of the game is SEVERELY lacking, but your ideas would take it to the point where it would only appeal to certain people, with certain tastes.
So yes, I would like to see these ideas happen, but only if they are optional. This game already has an image as a sandbox building game, with some survival aspects in it, no need to change that to the point where it gets reversed.
Third, make block destruction very very very slow. Survival has no meaning if you can just dig a hidey-hole and last as long as you want. This would make time much more valuable and every block precious.
Yet this suggestion would annoy the crap out of anyone who actually wants to build a castle or similar. The dig/build speed in minecraft is fine currently and messing it would just detract from the game in general.
A more workable solution would be to allow mobs to break (deconstruct) recently placed blocks and other objects (within say 5 minutes? Or a minecraft day?). Recently placed blocks could also behave more like gravel when disturbed by a monster and thus collapse.
This would prevent the "dig a hole then fill it in" and the "pillar into the sky" monster avoidance strategies. You would also no longer be able to rapidly construct a house or wall to avoid monsters, you would actually need to plan ahead for a bit. It would have other benefits such as preventing you from easily avoiding cave monsters by blocking off corridors.
Older structures would end up being 'solid' and thus immune to monster attacks.

This would just be annoying. If you've ever fallen into a hole with no tools, or been encased in something while offline in SMP, you should understand why.
In general, your "make XYZ take more time" suggestions don't actually make the game harder, they just make it more tedious (and thus less fun - it's a game, not a job). Try to think of things which make the game harder, or requiring of more skill, and not more time.
I like suggestions such as having torches either put out or suppressed while it's raining (making it dark outside, and requiring overhangs for torches and the like if you want them working while it rains).
Or perhaps having monsters gather at the edge of lit areas until they have some critical mass, whereupon they swarm. Or giving some skeletons shields with which to block arrows.

As a starting point, wolves could become aggressive and seek you out if you're carrying pork :wink.gif:.

Yeah, I'd like something along these lines too. The current "I just crammed down 4 loaves of bread and now I feel fine" in the middle of combat is a little silly.
