Hello all. My goal here is to build a most nefarious device: one that would, at the press of a button, crash Minecraft. I do not know if it is even possible, but in the spirit of all that is good in a sandbox game, I must try my hardest.
Before I continue, I should clarify that I'm operating under the assumption that if I induce enough lag, the game will crash, or at least cause so much lag that the game is unplayable (FPS<1) in a huge radius (e.g. 10,000+ blocks away).
My only ideas so far involve copious amounts of rapid pulsars, but I've run into a little snag: eventually, a redstone torch or dust piece WILL break. Are there any rapid pulsars that have 100% reliability? Also, controlling pulsars with levers seems to be buggy - I've been using a lever in the On position to inhibit the pulse, but sometimes when I turn the lever Off... nothing happens. The redstone dust stays on when it should begin to pulse.
Also, I've heard that torch towers constantly toggling induce large amounts of lag, but they don't seem to cooperate with pulsars. Pulsars seem to send signals too fast for the bottom torch in a tower to toggle, and thus force a ripple up the tower. Is it worth it to slow down the pulses and use something like a 1-clock hooked up to lots of large towers, or should I stick with pulsars.... or something else completely? This is a really new field for me, if you guys have any ideas, please help me! I'm not redstone-illiterate, but as you can imagine the wiki does not exactly have information I need.
So yeah, if you guys have any good ideas on how to crash/lag Minecraft, please contribute! I know it must not seem sane or ethical that I want to do this, but if it makes you feel better pretend I'm doing it for science. Oh, and Disclaimer: I understand that what lags my computer may not hurt yours so much, but the idea is that we're using modular designs that can be copied multiple times. In other words, if it doesn't work the first time, build some more!
releasing water onto complicated surfaces that cause a lot of branching
flooding crops so the wheat pops up (items on ground cause lagg, can be very severe as I recently learned when trying to make a semi-automatic wheat farm)
Good point, I should have mentioned that: let's pretend we can't use TNT. That was actually my first thought, haha, but I'd rather keep this as redstone-specific as possible. TNT can be hard to get in large quantities legit, and as funny as this may sound, using TNT would only make for a one-shot world-crasher. Also, if it didn't force a crash, the lag would only last for a limited amount of time, whereas our theoretical redstone device would stay on as long as the lever/latch was flipped.
As I'm not a redstone wizard, I'll just say make it set off dispenser and a lava flow through Kiershar's fluid controller which hatches chickens and powered bunch of powered rails which sets off a bunch of minecarts on SMP, which might crash the server. Add a bunch of 5-clocks and random 3-clocks, BAMM, you got a null.pointer.exception on your hands.
Perhaps if you use redstone to activate a lot of minecarts that go through a bunch of 'glitch' boosters?
I think using the 'glitch booster with a 2nd booster next to it could cause a crash.
Going off of your ideas, you could probably hook up a clock of some speed to a bunch of long lines of repeaters. When I made one in my creative world it lagged me a bunch, but that was probably about 20 repeaters active at the same time. With 100 or more that have a positive current at a time, you could possibly crash minecraft.

Hmm, good point. I didn't think of using carts. So, your idea is to activate a multitude of minecarts that run in a loop using a combination of glitch and powered boosters? Sounds promising! I'll look into it, as it could even be made toggleable by turning off the powered rails. I'm just worried the number of carts I'll need is unrealistically large, or that it might accidentally break itself somehow O_o
Also, it'd be great if a redstone wizard could answer some of my questions from the first post >_>
I can't continue my redstone experiments until I find a pulsar that works :sad.gif:
If we could make this as compact as possible, you could set one up underground in SMP and pretty much rape the world whenever you feel like it. Oh god, I hope to god that douche bags and griefers don't see this.

No you didn't, because TNT damage doesn't stack.

Or you can just get a single player console commands by using "tele 12550820 100 0" which teleports you to the far lands. http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Far_Lands
This area creates severe lag as you have to load practically the entire game and mobs just run rampant there.
I would use redstone torch towers connected to dispensers full of eggs. You would have a variety of lag: lag from the redstone, lag from hundreds of flying eggs, and lag from all the chickens spawned from the eggs.

Unfortunately that wouldn't work in multiplayer, since nether portals are non-functional.
It said portal. The portal isn't part of the Nether, it's only a block in the game.
(not redstone but still works)
(I think, may have been patched in 1.5)
But in multiplayer, the portal blocks don't do anything, so I don't think it'll cause a crash. Someone should test, though.

a few repeaters also do the trick
