i usually do this situationally:
pickaxe if: i plan on getting a ton of ore ASAP/need obsidian to make a creeper proof bunker
shovel if: i really need to flatten some stuff out
Sword if: im having trouble surviving
Well, the way I play has the pickaxe as the most important. I mean, it saves you time. To quote some YouTube vid I saw forever ago: "The world is infinite. Your time is not."
Just my two cents.

If we're talking about the very first diamonds you find, still presumably early in a world, then a sword is the best option. But...
If you play on peaceful, no real reason to have anything above a stone sword. Pickaxe becomes best option for first diamond tool. If you are prone to non-violent death, a diamond sword (which would otherwise last you an incredibly long time) will probably be wasted. Pickaxe becomes best option.
Pick axe, so you can mine obsidian and make a portal to the nether. Once you have access to the nether, you can collect super duper cool nether stuffs.
I wonder if diamond hoes will ever get any use, like the ability to get super rare seeds to make magic wheat or something?
Sword, then pick axe. IMO, shovel, axe, armor, and hoe are a waste of diamonds. Well... maybe an axe if you need a lot of wood. But shovel isn't THAT mich faster than iron, its only plus is durability. Armor doesn't protect you more, just lasts longer, plus you shouldn't be taking any damage with a diamond sword and a small bit of skill (except for fall damage when you are just too lazy to drop gravel, and maybe skeletons sometimes). And a hoe is just ridiculous. Has anyone here EVER made a legit diamond hoe?

No you didn't, because TNT damage doesn't stack.

Pick saves me heaps in time. My iron sword is all I need on hard. Maybe with a better AI I'd change my tune ... I still use stone for the other tools, but I guess it's just out of habit as I have chests filled with iron.
The main reason I don't put the sword above the pickaxe is because getting 2 diamonds usually isn't easier than getting a bow and bunch of arrows, and bow and arrows is much better than a diamond sword.

Evidence suggests that many people quote posts without reading them in their entirety.
Still no infinite strongholds D:
Mine would have to be the sword, kills in 2 hits and I never use obsidian, so the pick is next to useless for me.

A shovel and sword usually come later, shovel if I do a lot of landscaping, or sword if I plan to explore a large cave system early on.

Use diamond pick for moar diamonds.
Make other diamond st00f.
DIAMOND PICK
however, i imagine that i would make a pickaxe first if it where found while branch mining or simular.
