It's just ONE space it takes up... and because of this the inventory should be made bigger? No.
This was my thought exactly... Inventories fine as is, and while a backpack is a neat idea, it'd probably be too easy to get to justify it such as the case of using leather. In those cases you might as well just directly increase the space.
A better idea for something such as a backpack would be to keep the inventory as is, and add it in as a dungeon only item, increasing the amount of space, it is placed into a new slot by the armor and is destroyed when you die. It'd make it a useful but rare item.
I believe the inventory is a limit only when mining, if not it is manageable. And maps are more usefull for exploring then mining, I believe? So... ...deal with it?
No. With the addition of beds, I rarely use my compass anymore unless I am exploring. The watch is useful when spelunking, but otherwise unnecessary. Similarly, the map isn't going to be an item you will need to carry with you at all times unless you are exploring.
So, even if you are off exploring with no intention of returning to your home before nightfall you should never need more than the current inventory space even if you have tools, weapons, arrows, extra wood, compass, watch, map, etc.
If you want more inventory space, look for a mod. Otherwise the game will become unbalanced. There is plenty of inventory space as it is.
On second thought, I think everything should stack to 1000, diamonds should be as common as sand, and minecarts should have the ability to fly you to Herobrine's crib to hang out and play minecraft in minecraft.
We are currently able to function without any other unreleased items now, right?
Therefore, in the future, even though there are new items, we can either adjust our inv to use them, or we can make do like before.
If Notch were to make it so that some kind of item were "required" (as in because of some update, it would be very difficult to function without it, such as some new tool and block), then a few inv spaces could be added.

This game is extraordinarily "unbalanced" due to the ingenuity of minecrafters to exploit every possible advantage they can find. Not that I'm complaining, or that it's even a bad thing. To say a little more inventory would cause "unbalance" however, is simply outrageous.
One could also argue that those debating against extra inventory could simply use a mod to decrease their inventory size, should they find the extra slots are intimidating to look at. I often find myself only able to carry a few other types of items while exploring/spelunking with the intent of not coming back to safety for a while. Some sort of meaningful in-game upgrade for item space wouldn't kill or break anything.

Protip, make a chest while spelunking. Notch isn't going to increase inventory because of 1 new item.

Im actually kind of interested to even find out how people percieve things are "balanced" in a game with no goals or endgame. I've currently got a mob trap, automatic harvester and underground tree farms all connected by tunnels. I don't technically have to touch the surface or a natural cave, ever again, and by only surfacing during the day I can avoid all danger and build anything I want. Yet the game still remains fun and there's no way in hell you can call that balanced...

I like the game the way it is. The only balance issue that I find from increasing inventory is it cuts down on time spent going around. I don't care if people "cheat" or anything because its a game and people should have fun playing a game. If you aren't having fun, then be my guest and look for mods/cheats/exploits/etc. I agree with you that there really isn't any "balance" in a game where there is no goal, I just don't like seeing people complaining about tiny things at every update.
I don't agree with increasing inventory but I'd like the taskbar/toolbar thing to have an extra slot for the map.
I don't have issues with my inventory space but I do with what I put in my toolbar. Probably just because I'm lazy though and don't like to go to my inventory all the time to swap things out... Yeah just laziness.
But I'd like to see another box added in the toolbar but I'm not going to rage that I'm going to quit minecraft if Mojang doesn't add another slot or if Mojang keeps adding things to the game yet doesn't increase inventory. It doesn't really effect me much either way... (gasp posting something when I don't have a black/white opinion on the topic)
Though one positive on the keeping inventory small, when you die from something you loose less items...
I say this because I die very often. Usually I can't always get my items back because I usually die in lava or far away while exploring. So small inventory = less likely to loose more items. Sure you could just carry less items, but let's face it, if inventory increases people will use it more and thus carry more items.
I would like to see regular/enhanced inventory space added as a server option on SMP servers. That would add a lot of convenience for people who are using a no-monster SMP server purely as a creative server.
Yes, I agree. We should be able to carry every single item we ever collect with us at all times because it would not be fair to those who collect something, but cannot use it whenever they want. I mean in real life hickers can carry millions of pounds of gear with them, so why can't we? It only makes sense. I shouldn't have to make a decision on which items are more essential to bring with me and which aren't. That defeats the whole purpose of having fun.

Just so all of you stupid posters who want infinite inventory space know, excomotive not only disagrees with you, but questions your intelligence. That should shut up the infinite inventory space argument thats been going around this thread.

Something about stupidity and ridiculous straw mans?
The only time I really wish I had more inventory space is when I'm moving chests full of stuff.
I wish I could pick up a full chest in both hands without emptying it and move it. Let it take up my whole quickbar, so I can't use anything while carrying it. But let me move chests please.
So much improvement is needed on Minecraft, I don't think Notch himself would be able to fix the whole game in just a year.
I mean we are only in beta.

Its true than we can make a lot of chests and, therefore, thecnically haveing infinity inventory space, but its just plain ANNOYING when mining.
I say either add mor inventory spaces, or make food and other crap stackable.
Or both, better. I dont see why there needs to be this useless limitation in the very first place...
ALSO, no, making chests while underground its just a horrible idea, and I dont think I even need to explain why.
I mean we are only in beta.
