During my times on the forum I have come across mentions of branch mining to the "southwest". I was wondering about the validity of this. Does anyone have proof of it? Another thing I was wondering; How in the world do you even mine to the southwest, wouldn't you be mining diagnoly? It might just be my OCD about having a branch mine that looks perfect and uniform that is making that fact bother me, but it also does seem a bot strange.
**is there any way to figure out which way is Southwest?
***I am improving my Branch Mine at the moment, and I would really appreciate the input on whether or not this style is actually more effective than any other direction or not.
I remember the proof, but I don't have it ATM, but there are several ways to determine north.
1) The Sun moves west.
2) The Clouds move north.
3) Look for an "L" in cobblestone and netherrack. Align it to the left(if you're looking at it from above) and you are facing north. <- look at the top-left.
4) Press F3 and move around. If your X coordinate is decreasing, you are moving north. If your Z coordinate is decreasing, you're moving east. So if your going south-west, your Z and X coordinates are increasing. :wink.gif:
So if ores increase as you go southwest, does that mean that if you go far enough, there'll be ridculus amounts of ores, and if you go the other way, you'll have a really hard time finding any?

No, the ore amount do not increase with distance. The distribution is uniform.
The difference between south west and north east isn't so big that you would normally notice when you play normally, but if you do a lot of mining it's best to do so to the south west of coordinate 0,0. There should be a slight difference already at 1,1.
Do the same to the north west and you'll probably end up with the same amount. or the north east or the south west.
What part of RANDOMLY generated terrain do people not understand?
Sigh, you don't seem to realize that yes, there has already been several topics on this, and it was discovered that south-west has a higher concentration of ores.
Honestly, several people did the tests, and found 2000 more diamonds in the south-west of the spawn than the north east. Mind you, that was 2000 compared to 4000.
And when they fixed the glitch in the code, they ended up with around 4,000 diamonds in each direction, which was more normal.
It's a glitch in the terrain generation.
Yes, it's randomly generated terrain, but if the generator is screwy, it's going to be biased.
Simple code diving will help you find it, I seriously doubt you're the only person on the forum to look at the terrain generation code.
And if Search was working, I would post links. I guess I'll go look through Google.
I'm just slightly annoyed because it's already been proven there's a glitch.

It's nonsense. there is nothing in code or any of my mining research to show that. I fact about half the time the opposite has been true.
Actually do some research yourself rather than pass on some dumbass rumour.
Saying something isn't true without researching it is no different than saying it is true with no research.
How about YOU look it up, hm? If you looked at some of the prior posts, you'd see that it's confirmed as well as a description of what causes it in the code.

Means did occur, but no longer does. I have been researching the distributions of ore for about a month now. I have counted many samples from different locations on many different worlds.
There is no signifigant difference that I have ever seen. Maybe then, but not now. Not for me. Not on any of the dozens of worlds I have looked at.
THIS ALL HAPPENS BECAUSE MINECRAFT HAS A BIAS TOWARDS SOUTH AND WEST AND DISCRIMINATES POOR VICITMS NORTH AND EAST!!!!
HELL, EVEN IN THE CORDS THERE IS EVIDENCE RIGHT THERE! NOTICE THAN BOTH X AND Z VALUES ARE POSITIVE, IT MEANS SOUTHWEST!!! AND THEN THERE IS THE WHOLE SOUTHWEST RULES...
I've just gone over my data again, this time paying more attention to where the samples were from. There is indeed a difference.
I was wrong, and I apologise.
However. From what I've just calculated it's only about a 15% above the world average increase, so an extra three blocks for every twenty ore on average. Assumes 100% recovery.

Yes you are correct.
That's fine. I should also apologize if you might have thought I was being arrogant or annoying, or an ass. :smile.gif: I assure you, I wasn't.
Sometimes I choose the wrong words. It's hard for me to get my point across sometimes.
Glad to know I wasn't going insane though.
And yeah, it is a very small difference.
Hey, Enjay, remember me? :smile.gif: From Zdoom?

Well, I just carto'd iron ore in my world, and I'd say the borders are pretty clear. And I'm not referring to the fact that there are bright cyan lines.

Lol, I can see a very clear difference (Ok, not that clear but yeah... I can see it).
And your map is very small. But still, there IS adifference.
And if I remember correctly, this is due to the way it rounds when generating ores--It always rounds up, meaning positive co-ords (SW), get more ores than negative co-ords (NE). Don't remember exactly what it rounds on though, so it would be useful if someone more knowledgeable than I could fill that in.
Also, this is about the 5th thread I've seen about ores and southwest. Just sayin'.
To confirm what others are saying, this IS true, and has been backed up with evidence from a variety of ore counting programs, counting literally thousands of instances of ore in the various quadrants. Even looking at a ore distribution in cartographer will show a visible difference. It applies to diamonds, gold, iron, lapis, and I would assume, redstone and coal. Perhaps other things, like underground dirt deposits, but no one cares about those.
The difference between NW and SE and the highly ore filled SW is not that significant. However, just as SW has a boost in ore, NE actually has a deficit of ore. When comparing NE to SW, the difference is much more than a paltry 15%-20% difference. With diamonds, I believe the difference was in the realm of 60%.
Modders have found its fairly easy to fix . . . the default, "correct" amount is what appears in the NW and SE. This means SW is getting more than it should, and NE is getting less than it should.

Like... just throwing a random example out there... Doom, on account that it's technically 2-d?
The first pocket had 3, I used an entire stone pickaxe (except using iron pick for gold) and came out of my mine with 24.
Also, the L on the cobblestone points southwest.
