Red Apples can't be obtained legitimately, except by killing Notch in SMP (which is very unlikely).
Gold Apples can be found in dungeons though.
I found a gold apple in a dungeon yesterday...
For all of those 'Pics or it didn't happen' people, I thought it was common as I had only found 2 other dungeons. Now I realize it isn't. I ate it already to save myself from cave exploring and creepers.

I'm not sure if what you just said is true as of 1.5, but in 1.4 just the other day I found a red apple in a dungeon chest.
