I know this is old news (Beta 1.2 update), but I'm getting very sick of spiders climbing up walls. Not only is it frightening to see giant black arachnids jumping over your defense walls, but it also adds a completely new aspect to defense that I feel shouldn't be there
/\ This is me and my friend's SMP server, and as you can imagine, it is completely prone to spider attacks. Obviously, these are fences, which are now 100% useless when defending your courtyard from hostiles. These fences are 3 high, so they can be "spider-proofed" using the outer-block technique here:
I could always do that for this wall, but what about the fences around my base that aren't 3 high? The game technically doesn't even allow you to place fences on top of each other, you have to glitch them this way. That means that fences, without any glitching, are useless in keeping out all hostiles. I guess I'd be fine if there was a material that was immune to the spider climbing, but they can climb up anything, and get into places that you don't think enemies should be.
The thing that is really annoying, is that the spiders also use this to trash whatever scheme you have in caves. If you come across a group of enemies below you, you can always think it out, and come up with a smart plan to get down to them. When spiders can climb up stuff, they just leap right up to you, and knock you into lava.
Spiders are already the most agile enemy. They jump 2 blocks horizontally, attack really fast, and run quicker than you. I'm all for them being faster than you, but when they can climb up walls, they break the rule that you and all other enemies in the normal world share: you can only jump 1 block. Suddenly the whole game changes when you change the places that enemies can access.
That's my opinion, so thanks for listening, and tell me what you think!
If spiders didn't climb walls, then they'd just be wide short zombies. All the mobs are unique challenges to defeat and defend against. You've already learned how to defend against spiders - build those walls, man!
The last few days I've been playing on Hard and building a house, and almost every time I went up to the unfinished 2nd floor I was ambushed by spider(s). They even killed me a few times.
I like it.
The game gets waaay too easy even on Hard. I think that Zombie Pigmen should always be aggressive too.
Also, Just use a cactus wall to stop spiders from getting in if you are that annoyed by them. It also kills them.
Why not carry a bow and arrows? It makes all mobs much easier to handle and since the arrows bonce mobs back you can kill a spider without it ever getting near you.
I used to hate this ability too, until I realized how insanely easy Minecraft survival was without it. I mean, you could just surround yourself with 2-high walls, wait for morning, and then just climb on top of them and poke a stick at all the creepers until they die. That's not challenging. So, instead of completely draining them of this ability, how about this: They shouldn't climb anything that you can't put torches on. That means no fences, no glass, and no cacti. Heppy?
The game is about creativity. Problems are laid down before you, and you must creatively create solutions to them.
When we learn that at night, monsters come out, we solve this problem by making a house. When we learn that monsters spawn in dark, we solve this problem by placing torches. When we find out that creepers wait for you to come out of your house, we solve this problem by making windows and doors.
As problems develop, we must adapt and change the ways we fight, the ways we build, the ways we live, the ways we play.
The game is about fear. The fear of being alone and then the fear when you realize you aren't alone.
And when you adaptcreatively, you might realize that what you have done isn't enough, and you have to adaptcreatively again.
This induces fear.
We have built our houses, and they were safe, and then spiders changed, and we realized our houses were no longer safe, so we adaptedcreatively.
And if there wasn't change, fear and creativity wouldn't be part of this game.
And if fear and creativity and change weren't part of this game, then what would the point be?

No you didn't, because TNT damage doesn't stack.
See my About Me section for info about me.
i do believe spiders cant climb sandstone? A layer of sandstone 4 up wouldnt hurt.
Oh god not this again. Spiders can climb all materials, there were some pathfinding bugs (like the torch slowsand example) but attacking the spider would cause it to charge up the wall at you regardless.

"'spider climbing block research' thread back in 1.2_01"
I didn't know there was a 1.2_01 thread made right before 1.5... And I didn't know that a "spider climbing block research thread" would be about spider traps. Nice advertising scheme you got there.

Exceptions are what make the game interesting.
...that are faster and can jump twice as far...
I still had a tough time with them before the 1.2 update, but it got ridiculous when they started getting into my base in the most awkward ways.
I like it.

I'm pretty sure they can bro. Prove me wrong though.
Really?
I surrounded my base with a 2x2 moat of lava. Haven't had spider problems since.
But without the search tool, it's impossible to find it.
I just got uuuh... BSoD on Touhou. Wat.

No.
It had what blocks spiders climbed or not, and also had videos showing them.

I remember it quite vividly. The only block they can not climb is Soul Sand.
You know, except for the aforementioned zombies.
