If theres any iron blocks, Thunder will hit the closest one to the clouds, Becuase iron is like metal. When this happens, Super charge of electricity will be inside the block but only for like 2.5 seconds. This will power any redstone connected to the iron block. This would be good for building high buildings with iron block poles ontop of them to power stuff in the building.
Ah, iron is not like a metal, it is a metal. Now people will need to keep a set of leather armor to wear out during rain, because their iron armor will act like a lightning rod. Don't go swinging that iron sword on the top of a mountain!
Yeah it will be fun but I wish to see a biome that connects snow biomes to others in a transition. You could have patchy grass (connected to dirt that doesn't grow grass) and no flowers, trees without leaves and so on.
I like the idea of rain putting out torches, but it should only put out ones exposed to the sky. I've already made a bunch of light posts all over my base, and adding a few half step blocks over the top of the torches should keep them dry and prevent them from going out. This is what I have in mind:
Seriously, snow is coming back?! NERDGASM! I remember how awesome it was..and this time it will be back with more awesomeness! Go Mojang Go! :biggrin.gif:
I've read about half this thread, and I just thought I'd toss my two cents in about the challenge/realism vs. creativity/frustration debate.
First of all, torches in real life, depending on the material, would not necessarily burn out in the rain. I don't think it would look weird for MC torches to continue burning. Second, making them burn out would not be more of a challenge but rather an inconvenience. I don't think this is the kind of challenge boost that MC needs. All this would do is limit design possibilities.
I think it would be silly, unrealistic, and very annoying for rain or snow to solidify lava flows.
As for regular fire, I guess it makes sense for rain to put it out (more sense than torches, anyway), but even this will be a rather big nuisance for those of us who use fire outside. At present, I've lined my castle wall with burning netherrack as a way to prevent spiders from climbing the wall, and rain being able to extinguish fires will either nullify this technique or force me to put glass or something above the fire to shield it, which would be rather unattractive. This is pretty much a personal gripe though, and I still think it's reasonable for Notch to implement this.
Filling 1x1x1 holes with water when it rains sounds like a cool idea.
Also, I really, really hope snow and rain doesn't seriously affect frame rate. After 1.4, I'm already lagging like crazy.
Believe it or not, I actually kind of prepared for this update on my friend's SMP server. I made a warning system in our town hall using redstone torches in front of colored wool. I put blue as "Flood", but it could mean griefers or rain.

I wonder if thunder will do anything...
Zap zap zap
Well, thunder is just the sound of lightning striking. But I guess you mean lightning, I doubt it'll be nothing more the something soon to look at. I would be amazing though if lightning zapped animals and monsters. :biggrin.gif: (Wolves excluded, ts would kind of suck to loose your wolf like that...)
Snow making a return is great because on the SMP server I go on now we can get back the snow that got destroyed for whatever reason. Our village will probably become half-covered in snow since we live right between a forest and a tagia. Rain sounds interesting too. Wonder if it'll rain in the forest part of our village.

Today, everything's green. - - Tomorrow, is the doom.
From a survival player's perspective, it'd be kind of awesome if lightning had a chance of hitting tall buildings of any material, but a very low 25% to 12% chance of striking trees and wooden buildings and lighting them on fire.
Especially since, given the duration of a storm, it may or may not go out because of the storm.
I am afraid Notch's reply though may have fallen victim to the same scientific misunderstanding of thunder / lightning, however, and there won't be any actual cloud-to-ground strikes.

My Grandmother passed away on Sunday, the 7th of August, 2011. I am taking an extended leave of absence in light of this. My apologies.
Not as scary as a creeper peeing at you in the dark.

Seems interesting.

Even with a computer that's now a few years old, I have no lag issues. Like ever.
That said, I'm REALLY excited for Notch to put the weather back in. I was really disappointed with him when he removed it.
To people who think that these weather effects will be OMGPERMANENT in a biome, please *read* the tweets:
"It's temporal and global"
"It's temporal and global"
"It's temporal"
Just pointing out the obvious to those who were born without eyes.
Yes please.
Let him just rip the track from rainymood.com
OT: Woooot. I'll finally have an incentive to build a snowy cabin home :smile.gif:

I SEE YOU
Like a hurricane, that places water source blocks randomly.
Or a blizzard, that places a layer of full snow blocks and converts all exposed water sources to ice.
