The game doesn't force you to have a wolf as a pet does it? Its a feature, people like it, Hopefully they will get better and you can be Happy until you rage again cause of the next update.
This post reminded me of something I was going to say.
When wolves were announced, every flipped out saying how awesome it was gonna be, what to name them, etc.
Update comes out, people say "OMFG Y DOG SO DUMB", "I DUN LIKEZ TEH DAWGS CUZ THEY DUN FITS MIENCWAFT1!1", "NOTCH NEED REMOVE THEM STUPIDS WOLFIES NAO!!!!!!"
Granted, there were some people against the idea from the beginning, but I seriously saw people who were anxious for the updated...just to end up saying this.
I'm sure the 1.5 update is going to make the people who said weather was awesome going to rage because it's laggier or something like that.
They're quite buggy, I've found this out by testing a lot of the wolves I've tamed, and yes they do need work.
But it's beta. It needs work. There's bugs. We just have to wait. If you don't like them, ignore them like any other passive mob.
Can you atleast the OP and some of the posts after it? I just want to smack you across the face with a fish.
Let's say that Notch will screw the game up so bad you can't play for a week/month. (Well, that has happened to us before, but this doesn't matter.) I bet you will come to the forums sayng: "It is still beta"
And sayng that we should ignore them also proves that you haven't read the thread. It has been said many times. The time he spent on making wolves could have been used to add 4-5 types of blocks and items to nether or normal world.
I read it. No, if Notch screwed up THAT bad, I'd be pretty freaking ticked off, beta or not, there's a different between small bugs and a game breaking bug.
You can still ignore them. It's the truth, that's why others said it. If you don't like them, that's okay. But there's really no need to get mad at Notch, it's something he apparently thought a lot of people would like, and he was right. You can't say that everyone wants 4-5 blocks and items to the nether or normal world, some people want planes, some people want TVs, some people want more mobs like wolves.

KC, would you at least read it over again, because it's readily apparent that you didn't get FlowerChild's message. If you're honestly going to say "you can still ignore them," you have no idea what this thread is about, nor FlowerChild's argument for either a) leaving wolves as they are, or :cool.gif: just dropping them altogether.
Yes he apparently thought people would like it, and plenty do, myself included. The point of this topic is future dev time. Now that you've got reading down, try comprehension first.
Seriously I will TCPunch the next person to say "ignore them lolol troll."
all of those too you OP ! you deserved them :smile.gif:
I'm sorry, but can I say that I dislike you more every time you post your damn zombie on a stick?
Its really damn annoying.
You're not "That Guy" that does that certain thing that everyone knows about, your "That Guy" that does that stupid thing that everyone knows about.

I love it how you imply I don't comprehend what OP is saying.
He's right on some places, I can agree with that.
Yeah...I don't think Notch should put more work into wolves, there's more important stuff, and we have something to keep us occupied for a little until cool stuff comes out.
Infact, I think that before Notch thinks of any other ideas he should be adding stuff to the completely forgotten Nether so it's not just a wasteland of lava and ghasts.
And, apologizes for any grammar errors/spelling or if I'm sounding really stupid, I'm kind of sick right now, so it's difficult explaining what I'm trying to say.
your first two points do make sense, they get stuck in front of your path all of the time. but i like the idea of a hunting animal that can help you kill something a lot faster. for me, i usually would leave them in a dog house type thing i made, but one time i came to check up on them and they weren't there anymore D:
its a love hate relationship.
Wolves are fantastic, they're just a little useless at the moment.
They need to be made more competent with walking around and killing, and easier to heal. Then, Minecraft could use some bigger, more challenging mobs to take down.
Oh, and the whole "loneliness" argument is invalid. For one, nothing is forcing you to tame wolves, and two, being all lonely is just kind of... lame. Not to mention inapplicable to SMP.
Well after reading the first page I decided not to bother reading anything else but the last page. I'm surprised that about 95% of people on this forum are completely unable to know what they are replying to before they reply to it.
Anyways, TC has a good point. I tamed two wolves on the SMP server I play on and ended up naming them Herp and Derp for reasons I'm sure some people are aware of. While removing wolves from the game is a waste, developing something other than wolves will mean a lot of new features.

No harm done, but yes, I did more than imply, particularly because you made the same exact argument every TL;DR troll made, which was "you can always just ignore them." But thank you for taking the time to post anywhoo, and with something a little more in line with the topic's OT.
@andrew: Now, what page did you stop reading on again?

I've thought about this a little, and I kind of wish Notch didn't focus his time of wolves, but made improvements to things that need it the most (like minecarts). I still like the wolves, but it seemed a little early for this anyways.
Finally, got what I was trying to say typed up correctly. ...
you seem to forget that this is beta, not finished, needs polish, has bugs and features that don't quite work right. It will get better if you wait longer than 5 hours.
PFFFFFHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA
Please, oh PLEASE then, explain to me why notch is going to release this game THIS YEAR? Its probably STILL going to be riddled with bugs.
Wolf Fixes.
Wolves will not protect you if they are sitting.
Wolves can walk through doors.
Wolf Additions
Crafting a "leash," out of 3 string, prevents the wolf from moving more than 2 blocks away from you, and it cannot fall while on the leash (aka sneaking.)
Wolf pathfinding is improved.
Wolf attack pathfinding is improved.
Ah, but thanks everyone for posting real discussion again. :smile.gif:
I agree :smile.gif:
I'm actually finding the lifecycle of this thread rather interesting in and of itself. It seems like most of the TL:DR trolls also suffer from ADD and the thread is now seeing more significant contributions once again. Guess there's not much more you can say after making some random ignorant flame because you didn't read the OP.
Anyways, I seem to have reversed on my decision to abandon the thread, so to anyone posting here, you can count on me still being around :wink.gif:
I just don't understand it though. If you don't like wolves, don't tame one!
It's simple, you're getting worked up about nothing...
While waiting for a rebuttal to my last post, let me point this gem out...
...correct! You don't understand the post! So please, read at least the first few pages of the thread, are don't bother posting.

It's not like the sheep are particularly clever either, wandering in to the single block of lava at ground level outside my house, setting themselves on fire. I like the wolves. Keep them.
The problem isn't that the wolves act stupid, it's that everyone has very unrealistic expectations of what they should do, without realizing how much development time it would take to add all the silly things, like chasing their tails, to make wolves more "real." I personally don't mind them as is, but I support their development to give the Mojang team more experience with "intelligent" routines.
Wolves, as they are implemented are lame. They amuse for 2-3 minutes, then you tell them to stay where they are because:
a) they teleport into your path.
:cool.gif: their pathfinding is terrible, and they constantly get stuck on stuff and fall into crap to their deaths.
c) their behavior isn't interesting enough to put up with the above.
Now, I'm going to take an educated guess here and say that Peter Molyneux is probably the developer in question that suggested these things. It's right up his ally.
A couple of things to keep in mind with Molyneux: he has great ideas, but his ideas are often way overly ambitious. This is why his games are constantly very late and way over budget. While he's brilliant, he also has a tendency to go way off on design tangents that keep his development teams spinning in circles.
In this case, I think an idea has been suggested that is totally secondary to the core gameplay of Minecraft, which to my mind revolves around exploration and construction. Wolves have nothing to do with either of these. They are entirely secondary to the core gameplay experience.
And on the downside: so far, all the creatures in the game have worked perfectly well with VERY simple AI. Nobody really cares if creepers and sheep fall over cliff edges or what have you. In fact, the very simplicity of this behavior has lead to emergent gameplay in terms of people constructing Mob traps and such.
But PETS are a whole other ballgame. People expect pets to behave logically and in an amusing fashion. Suddenly, you are opening up a whole other AI can of worms. You need GOOD pathfinding to solidify wolves as a feature. You need to code a wide range of interesting behaviours so that they are worth having around. Then of course, you have to debug all of the same.
In other words, I believe that in adding Wolves to the game, you've put yourself on a development slippery slope. You've basically committed yourself to spending a huge amount of development time on a feature that is entirely secondary to your core gameplay experience, and features that are unlikely to be reusable in the rest of the game.
So Notch, I urge you to drop wolves completely, or at least cut your lossess now and leave them in the state they are. There are far more important features that would be great to have in the game, and in working on wolves, you're sacrificing those other features for something that is of little relevance to Minecraft.
all of those too you OP ! you deserved them :smile.gif:
