BETA,BETA,BETA,BETA!!! wolves arent just for exploration and construction they are for pets and PROTECTion and notch wanted it in the game dont let tell him what to do like saying "So Notch, I urge you to drop wolves completely" that sounded kinda rude even if you guys say its not. NOTCH worked hard for it he was thinking we minecrafters would be proud of it(mostly the cuteness of it). and remember: notch JUST RELEASED wolves! he didnt just worked all the days for an ugly pathfinding wolf. if he see bugs HE WILL FIX IT, we arent perfect you know.
*weird solution*:
-Burn all trees (mostly wolves spawn in forest biomes (i dunno what specific biomes)but if you dont want to waste any wood just cut them as fast as you can)
-ignore them (let them despawn (if your "bravehearted" you can kill the wolves juat make sure you can handle a group...)or if you dont want to do all those stuff just make a mob trap or a cactus walls)
-observe?(or you could just watch wolves being cute :3)
-watch them die?(if its possible for the wolves being attacked by aggressive mobs(untamed wolves of course) being killed by mobs)
*end of weird solution*
I understand that people think it's a waste of time, but as said before, there is no time limit.
That's a bit naïve, isn't it? Do you remember Notch saying he had pretty much given up on mega-beasts and block physics? At some point, they're going to decide that enough is enough, and push the finished game out the door. With or without dragons.

It is unfair to say the pet is the only reason this update was lackluster. I'd venture to say that from the dev's perspective, achievement framework was the big change this update.
Possibly, though that would just be guessing from our side. Either way, I'd happily extend my argument to achievements. Fix the bugs that cause crashes every 5 minutes for a few unlucky people first, then add achievements.
you seem to forget that this is beta, not finished, needs polish, has bugs and features that don't quite work right. It will get better if you wait longer than 5 hours.

Many good things come from Sweden, like minecraft and.... umm.... did i alredy say minecraft?
if u put redstone in jukebox, will it play redzone?
I didn't even care to read more than your first 4 lines.
Don't f'ing tame the wolves and they won't be a f'ing problem for ya ? Happy ?
Hahaha this is what i try and tell everybody, its not something you absolutely have to use. The dogs are there just for a fun add-on to the game.
So quit being a bunch of whiny :Pig:s
Somebody is actually directly agreeing with the first reply to this thread?
It's like you guys are trying to make me commit suicide. Not that I'll ever do it, because I'm not wuss.
I am absolutely not staying in this community for long... However, I do respect the OP and anybody who has actually managed to read and UNDERSTAND the actual TOPIC of this thread.
The OP is speaking from experience in a very objective manner. Most of the people who disagreed with him didn't even read anything more than the thread title, and most of the people who did actually read anything and still disagreed usually just didn't have the same perception as the OP based upon experience in developing games(or watching games be developed). However, there has been at least 1 valid counter-point to what the OP said, but that has since been lost in the sea of stupidity that is the contributions to this thread(as in to say, that they're not very contributive at all).
Do I have experience as a professional game developer? No. But I still managed to understand the posts that actually MADE SENSE...

I agree. It's very naïve, and yet here we are replying to the argument for the umpteenth time.

Well, Notch made a bad decision then. Beta is for core elements.
Apparently not in minecraft development. I'd say it's the prerogative of the developer to decide how development should progress.
This.
One of the nice things about owning your own business is that you get to use your own business model. It seems to have worked out pretty well for them so far, so I doubt they'll be taking advice from random forum posters on that subject any time soon.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Sorry but I'd have to disagree.
One of the biggest problems with indie game devs is their desire to believe that it's "their game" and that they are merely letting other people play it as a privilege. I don't respect people who think that way, it's selfish and unprofessional.
Notch is leading a business now, whether he likes it or not, and it's his responsibility to provide customers with a quality product. Adding bugs to said product instead of fixing them as a priority is poor decision making.
Of course he can do whatever the heck he wants. But he'll still suffer the repercussions. And this thread was created out of concern for said repercussions.
To me, this is nothing different from other companion mob mods i've seen.
Try Minecolony. Same deal.
No, they kept sucking a pathfinding so i stopped using it.
Charlotte: She's the best tuned i've seen and still it isn't perfect. She has the infamous "pushy" glitch. though i'll give kodiac a point here for getting her targeting perfected. She's rabid when things attack you.
Pet mod: Don't get me started, please... it's probably the worst. Fun, but frustrating as hell.
And i have to poke a dead horse here, sorry. Don't tame them till and if he fixes em.
Now does anyone think that any one of these ideas would take more work to implement than the wolves, and add less to the game?
Me, i do.

I do not think coming up with new block ideas is a problem in the least. I think practically anyone on these forums could throw out a half-dozen blocks they'd like to see in the game off the top of their head.
And for the sake of extending my point here's my personal list of a half-dozen blocks I'd like to see:
-Photo-resistors (circuit elements that detect the presence of light and can change logic flow based on it).
-Water/lava gates to control the flow of liquids for use in traps and such.
-Fence gates. Block creatures in the same way as a fence, but can be opened and closed.
-Powered lights. (glowstone + glass maybe?), so you can turn the lighting of an area on and off.
-Lasers (glowstone + diamond). Not as a weapon or for damaging creatures, but for display. In other words, power a laser and it projects a point of light on whatever surface it intersects at a distance. Could open up a whole realm of user-created displays. Could also be used in combination with photo-resistors to communicate a singnal over long distances without having to lay miles of redstone wire. Could also be used as "trip wires" in combination with photo-resistors. Really, the possibilities for emergent gameplay are huge here.
-Concrete: Flows like lava or water, but solidifies into a solid block with time.
I realize that these ideas are redstone heavy, but since that's one of my favorite aspects of the game, that's where my mind tends to wander. I'm sure others can just as readily come up with ideas for their favorite aspects as well.
Now does anyone think that any one of these ideas would take more work to implement than the wolves, and add less to the game?
Ho come on, you give just two choice ?
I will give you mine: i prefer wolf to all of these united even if they would take half the time because for me new block aren't core gameplay. They are pretty thing for the sake of variety and do not advance the game.
Interaction with the wild in his various form is a unfinished core gameplay.
The little pretty thing about wolf, their animation, the fact that they remove water when exiting it are low-time consuming, like gold.
What is really time consuming is the pathfinding and starting to program various AI behavior variable.
And to join the fan of redstone that you are, what the point of even more complex redstone mechanism if the only trap you need is a hole in the ground ?

If you haven't got to the point in the game where you start seeing the fun of building more and more complex mechanisms, I think you're missing out on a huge portion of the gameplay experience that Minecraft has to offer. The ideas I put forth are not limited to use in traps by a long shot.
However, if your enjoyment of the game primarily stems from exploration and simpler construction, I am sure there are others of like mind that can suggest ideas that would imrpove those aspects of the game much more, and at lower cost, than the wolves.
I, sadly, enjoy the survival aspect alot more and the AI make it too easy. So yeah, it not that i don't enjoy complex building other than trap is because trap are a part of survival in my eyes.
-I play on hard
-Then i found it way to easy so i installed Mo creature and PinkSlime mod
-I still found it to easy so i installed CJB's Hardcore Mode Mod. That way i have to eat everyday or i die and if i actually die, my inventory is wipe out.
For me, an advance in creature/ai, even if it's lacking and need alot of work, is a step in the good direction.

You put forward your argument well, and I agree with everything you say regarding Molyneux, but here is where your main point falls down as I see it. Minecraft is a game about doing whatever you want to do with it, and as was said in the first few posts wolves are no different to any other mob if you don't want them to be. Forgive me for not reading all ten pages for any development in your standpoint, but as far as your original post goes that's my view on it.
But as was pointed out many times before (and in my OP), this isn't just about the usefullness of wolves, this is about the usefullness of wolves relative to the work required to bring them to their full potential.
"Doing whatever you want" will ultimately have boundaries in terms of what the developers can effectively produce. In an ideal world with infinite resources, I would have no problem with wolves whatsoever, and would, as many have said, just not play with them if I didn't want to.
