Achievements strike me as what developers add to games when they run out of ideas for fun things to do, which saddens me considering how many cool ideas I've seen floating around the forums here (in addition to some bad ones, admittedly). I am personally not very interested in some arbitrary list of tasks Mojang comes up with based on existing gameplay.
If I wanted to ride a pig off a cliff, I'd do that. Why is Mojang wasting time implementing a stat tracker? They could be adding new hostile mobs like giant clay golems who dry up into statues in the sunlight or bring back falling snow or give us wool half steps or come up with fantastic new blocks and minerals like marble or add magnets (aka magical "lode stones") which could be used to develop some really cool in game mechanical devices or add obsidian meteorites that fall from the sky and smash craters in the earth with special super-rare magic gems inside with magical powers, etc. etc. etc.
I've seen some pretty fantastic ideas thrown around the forums here. Why is Mojang wasting time on implementing achievements? Nobody was asking for them. Nobody wants them. This isn't WoW. Nobody gives a crap about some list of silly tasks you come up with for us to check off. I want to build beautiful things and fight new monsters and explore new worlds. Achievements are the worst trend in the modern gaming industry. It's lazy development.
You seem to be forcing your opinion onto others. Saying "nobody wants them" is a lie. I personally, enjoy achievements. Minecraft has become stale to me. Achievements will give me some more things to do in the game.

Yeah, achievements are pretty dumb. I don't like any goals in my Minecraft, and if there's a little tracker on the website that mocks you for your inadequacy in acheivements, I'll go into the .jar file, cut out the achievements .class files, put them in a cheap flash drive, and burn the flash drive.

That's my whole point, there are a million great ideas for gameplay.
Achievements are a great way of not adding anything new.

Existing gameplay in a path normally not taken. Most people don't just "Ride a pig off of a cliff" for no reason. Achievements extend the life of the game. New content gets old real quick, but some achievements will take a while to complete. And the hard ones will give me a feeling of accomplishment. Finding a new block isn't very exciting. "Oh look sandstone! Cool!" quickly turns into. "Uhg sandstone..."

Wait, what?
You're saying no to new content because new content will "get old"? (and you don't think a stat tracker will get old?)
Ugh, you lose six diamonds.

You kidding? Everyone on my server treats sandstone like gold, it's so rare.
I'm not as excited about achievements as stats. I would really like to know how many hours/days I've gone without dying in-game.
As far as achievements, I agree, it isn't really that interesting per se, but it is a drive towards more of some type of goal to the game that Notch wants. Also, for some people I'm sure if they gain all the achievements they would consider Minecraft "beat" and move on to the next game.
hey now, sarcasm is not necessary. Im merely pointing it out because it seems like youre trying to force your opinion upon others. Usually other people don't like having opinions thrust at them and get mad, leading to flame wars and locked threads.
The game is still in beta. Mojang can do whatever they want, and we have no right to get mad. Notch could declare the end of the beta, and nobody could do anything about it (except get a refund). You see, we pre-purchased. Usually pre-purchasing means you buy the game, and you get to play it later. Not in this case. We get to play minecraft before it's done. It's called "Minecraft Beta" for a reason.
In short, don't get mad because Mojang isn't only adding what you want. Mojang will add more content to the game. So what if they spend a week out of the many years they're developing the game to make acheivements? It's 1 week, dude. (Yes, i know it's been more than 1 week, but there are other things in the updates as well).
I personally think they are wasting time on their new game Scrolls more than Achievements. They should focus on minecraft until its fully released and then they have all the time in the world to go fiddle with scrolls instead of worrying about both.
I need to agree that the achievements are more of a waste of programming in my opinion.
I don't really sit around and just try to get a achievements unless the achievement has some sort of in-game effect. New clothing, experience, just something to see besides 'you got an achievement +1 to achievement point total'.
Now while I don't mind them, and adding them dosn't hurt the game in my opinion. I feel that, unless this is the best time to add them in (along with the stat tracker) or they are just a very quick input into the game system. That this time is better spent adding to the game, working on getting mod support implemented, work on getting biomes working better, work on putting in more weather effects. Anything but putting in these achievements that do nothing to affect the actual longevity of the game, and even from a current players perspective, are better put in at the end of development (to help extend life) not in the middle.
Now if this is a step towards making his idea of a tutorial work, that he's mentioned in the past. Then yeah sure no problem.
But again, achievements alone are just a waste of time. Even while I find the stats neat..its a waste of time.

PvP is like sex. When both parties are willing, it can be a very enjoyable experience. However, when one party is not, it is bound to ruin someone's day.

If you have no opinion either way, then I don't see much of a reason tallying that.

Do you know you can craft sandstone out of 2x2 sand in the craft-table?
