This forum never ceases to amaze me in its ability to destroy my faith in humanity.
The op was extremely polite and articulate, he was not flaming or whining. All he is saying is that Mojang needs to start acting like a professional development company. You know, like they claim to be.
I get the same feeling the op does. Minecraft is adrift, adding little things here and there which ultimately are gimmicks and add nothing to gameplay. What needs to be done is polish. Minecraft is still quite buggy and unstable. The only games I've ever played that were as, or more, unstable than Minecraft are Morrowind and Oblivion.
All that is being asked for is that Mojang stops stringing us along.

Hi, i'm a scientist, from the NASA. I can make science, so I tell you as a pro, Minecraft is not laggy.
so what does feature complete mean to you? that it has everything YOU want? Notch said the (one of the) next thing(s) he was working on is mod support, that should make updates stop breaking.
And really, your whole mod thing falls aparat when you could just you know NOT UPDATE
you know you can do that right? turns out you can.
All he is saying is that Mojang needs to start acting like a professional development company. You know, like they claim to be.

You're comparing a small, independent development studio whose game is in Beta, to Bethesda's retail releases?
All that shows is that Bethesda should have kept their games in Beta longer, instead of caving in to impatient players who'd rather have a game "done right now" than "done right".
What's your hurry to have Minecraft "finished"? You can enjoy it now, in the state it's in, or wait to buy it when it's officially released.
I'm not seeing how anyone is being "strung along" when it was all laid out in plain English when you bought the game. If you didn't understand that the game is indefinitely in development, with no guarantee of a release date, and "as is", don't blame Mojang. Blame your English teacher.
This forum has upheld my faith in humanity - it has reaffirmed my belief that the species is collectively self-important, impatient and delusional.

"Don't know why you should feel that there's something to learn... it's just a game that you play."
That is a contradiction in terms sir. You mean this forum consistently reaffirms your lack of faith in humanity. To know they are "selfish" and all that, is to have no faith in them. Way to be clever. Way to assume that I'm some spoiled child who wants the game finished right now. All I want is for Mojang to stop adding frivolous content and compiling a massive list of bugs. DON'T be like Bethesda Mojang. Don't leave it to a bizarrely loyal fan-base to fix your game with mods.
I compared it to Bethesda's stuff in its level of instability. It has remained unstable for 6 months and very few of the updates have done anything in the way of bug-fixes. All I'm asking is that they employ the knowledge that is imparted in a 300 level course on software engineering in a state-university. You should NOT add a lot of new content when the stuff you've got barely functions.
When Mojang decided to enter Beta state, they were using an existing term, with a very specific meaning. Beta state is supposed to represent a nearly feature complete version of the game which is currently in a testing and bug-fixing stage. Instead they have almost entirely ignored bugs and just added useless features like cookies and wolves. How about the flesh out existing features? You know, like do something with the Nether? Or maybe fix the horrible portal bug? Or deal with the weird CTDs that I get whenever I use Far view? AND DON'T YOU DARE try call me a troll and say I should go buy a decent computer! I am using an Nvidia 9800 GT graphics card and an AMD Phenom Black processor. I can run Crysis on the second highest settings smoothly. Its NOT my machine, it is faulty code in MineCraft.

Faith doesn't necessarily have to be optimistic. Once more, you have an expectation that everyone should believe as you do. This forum reaffirms my belief as to the state of the human condition. Try and redefine the word as you will, but unlike your "faith", mine is confirmed.

The game is still in development. You knew that when you bought it. Did you think you were buying voting stock in the company?
If it's still like that upon release, you may have a basis of comparison.

It's not faulty code in Minecraft, it's your faulty understanding of Java. You're either running 32-bit Java on a 64-bit Windows OS, or you haven't allocated enough memory to the Java heap. Either way, anyone with a "300 level course on software engineering in a state-university" should know why those CTDs happen and how to avoid them.

Discussing this very important topic on this forum is completely pointless. Notch has too many nut licking fanboy defense force members to make this conversation even remotely intelligent. It always devolves into the same BS of "you bought the game as is", "Notch is just a man", "the game is just beta", "Minecraft is perfect the way it is", etc, etc.
Trying to talk about the truth around here is pointless, and Notch has shown that he doesn't have a real plan for Minecraft and if he does he isn't following through on it very well. Notch is a crappy developer who has lost interest in the game because we made him a millionaire. He already has one abandoned game in Wurm and I wouldn't be surprised if he abandons Minecraft too in a couple months. The fact that nobody at Mojang can implement a feature fully and properly should tell you all you need to know about things over there. Just take the example of cookies added in 1.4. They are completely pointless since cocoa is impossible to find and they only heal 1/2 heart. Why bother coding such a worthless item and putting it into the game? Why not finish the damn item properly and then put it in so that a year later we aren't still talking about the half-assed crap you put in the game and didn't bother to finish? Like flowers not growing, boats being broken, and a sever lack of uses for just about every item in the game.
Nothing was clear from the get go. The Minecraft TOS has changed more than a baby's diaper and when you combine that with the fact that most TOS are meaningless anyway since they wouldn't hold up in court there is no point talking about it unless you want to be a Notch ball hugger.
The fact is that Notch says the game will be finished in 2011 and at the pace Mojang is going the finished game will be about as empty and broken as it is now.
Anyway, as I said there is no point trying to discuss this here with the rabid defense force so I'm out.

That's because we have two sides to the issue: the facts, and your opinion.
You're entitled to your opinion, but that doesn't make it a fact. The terms are pretty clear, and even if they weren't when you laid your money down, you agreed to the conditions that existed at the time.
If you think that laying your money down on a game while it was still in Alpha gave you ANY expectations, other than to get the game if and when it's complete, you're an utter fool. You don't need a "fanboy" to tell you that - go ahead and try to explain the situation to someone who doesn't even play Minecraft. Most of them would say "You paid money for a game that wasn't even done yet? Are you stupid?"

I like your way of thinking, and how well thought out and constructive your thread was. (I have not yet skimmed through the thread, but am a 100% sure not EVERYONE shares my viewpoints.)
I disagree with the whole E-Mail campaign thing as I think it would only slow Mojang down (They don't need any help with that.) But I do agree with its direction.
I must let you know that in this time the updates for mods ARE optional... so you can wait until a modding API is out to update. I'm on 1.4 and I intent to stay on 1.4 until I see a modding API.
Thank you for posting such a constructive form of criticism, you are truly a credit to the fan base.
The work that modders do is so incredibly more impressive than the silly little update that was 1.4. I don't really care if minecraft is ever officially finished as long as people keep making really cool mods.
Well this is nice... I doubt if this little bit of posting on the forum had anything to do with it, but Mojang has addressed everything I hoped they would. To quote from Notch's latest blog post:
...we decided to bring in bug fixing into the development method in a more clear way so that people working customer support can add them as tasks for us, and that we finally set a release date for Minecraft.
It’s a bit tricky to really do a release for Minecraft as we keep updating it all the time. For one, the version we deem as the “full version” won’t be very different at all from what the game was like a week ago, and we’ll keep adding features after the release as well, so it’s really more of a milestone when we finally get rid of the Beta label, and some kind of goal for us to work towards. The plan is to be open with this and try to get people to cheer us on as much as possible, but to be open with the fact that the game won’t change much at the actual release day. (It’s more a progress up until that point)
We picked November 11, with the unofficial tagline “us too”.
This makes me feel a hell of a lot better about the future of Minecraft.
