I tend to carry a half dozen stone picks with me, when I'm out mining, and one or two iron picks for the better ores.
I've have poor luck with diamond picks (get lost in a cave, and jumped by a creeper or something, and not make it back in time) so I haven't made more than a couple of them. Keep one in a chest, for those times I feel like digging up obsidian.
Iron. It mines everything almost as fast, can mine everything but obsidian, and I have lots of iron, but not diamond, so i make iron pickaxes. They also last resonably long.
Same. Diamonds are for my SERIOUS mining.

I love Blizzard, but god help me, WoW is a giant money engine that uses human souls as fuel.
I usually carry alot of stone pickaxes around because DAMN, face it, stone is hella abundant!
There's also cobblestone generators, and since wood is renewable, INFINITE PICKAXES.
Once I get a diamond pickaxe, I use it only for important occasions, or for mining obsidian. I usually keep my iron pickaxes for ores like diamond and redstone.
Tons of stone and then one diamond.
Stone is for mining anything stone can mine, and diamond is for special stuff. *I mass mine cause I need stone*.
I don't use iron since I can use it for greater things, like minecarts/rails.
I prefer Diamond but I don't have to many of them. So I use Iron for the most part.
Well I do use mostly Stone. Well I have both iron and stone with me and I just sorta switch between depending on how fast I want to get through an area and such. lol
i just use diamond. i find enough diamonds using my diamond pickaxe (bedrock level branch mining, been doing it since august 2010) to make atleast 2 or 3 more pickaxes.
I used to be all about the stone picks but I've recently gathered enough piles of iron to start making iron pickaxes. They make mining a lot more enjoyable and you don't have to worry quite as much about losing your prized possession since iron is much easier to find than diamond.
Maybe I'm just a little bit attached to my diamonds due to being afraid of losing them because of their rarity due to me not being that serious of a miner.
But if I have to, I'll still switch back to stone (usually when I'm deep within a cave and I don't want to use my iron at the moment).
Wood I don't like to use due to how inefficient it is with when mining deep underground where wood isn't always that plentiful.

WOAH, WAIT. Our eyes take pictures? Please tell me I can recover these pictures from another person.
You have to stick a thumb drive up their nose, drag and drop the pictures onto it, and then load them through your ear.

diamond for obsidian
stone for stone
works majestically
Diamond count: 2.
i've tried doing that, i just get irritated constantly having to switch around
just put them in consecutive slots...

So, diamond. I save my iron for tracks/cart/bucket/door.
