A while back I found a vein of redstone with 11 whole blocks in it! (Pictures included) I had no idea this was possible. Has anyone here ever found an absurd amount of one block/ore in one place? I always thought the limit for redstone was like 4-6 blocks...
Being a nerd is nothing to be ashamed of. Nerds rule the world! Who invented the internet? Nerds. Who created personal computers and smart phones? Nerds. Who made every video game you've ever played and ever will? Still nerds. Who sent probes to distant planets? Nerds, nerds and more nerds! I'm a nerd and I'm proud.
Yeah, the average coal vein has around 16-20 ore, for a single vein; as for redstone, single veins can have up to 10 ore and veins with up to 8 ore (2x2x2 cubes) are pretty common. I don't really count, but I've mined seeminly endless coal veins before, with a decent-sized cave left behind after I'd mined them out; I wouldn't be surprised if I've mined veins of 100 before, given that I've probably mined more coal than anybody else (not really kidding). Of course, while the Wiki claims that you can find up to 64 ore in a vein that is actually multiple smaller veins, I don't think there are ever more than 24 ore in a single vein (the largest obviously single vein I found when I was looking at vein size, using MCEdit to delete stone/dirt/gravel).
Also, using Minutor on my first main world I easily found this enormous vein with no less than 19(!) redstone, located at 133, 9, -455 using the seed -123775873255737467 in 1.5.2 or earlier (it doesn't work in later versions, even 1.6.x, because when they removed water lakes from deserts it changed the sequence of random numbers when ores are generated, as ores generate after lakes; when I recreated the world in 1.6.4 the vein was no longer there and I had to use 1.5.2):
Also, the same seed contains this huge mass of iron veins with nearly 40 iron ore all in this small area (check out all the coal and diamond as well; yeah, that's how I mine so much ore; I actually found this one while playing around on a recreated world while testing mods, but it also appears in vanilla, not sure it it exists in my original world, with the area generated in 1.5.1):

Fact: Using flint and steel on a creeper causes them to stop in place and blow up.
And yes, that was an awesome cave. I walked myself to 9 diamonds
Yeah, coal is pretty abundant. I think I've found around 30 in one vein before.
This vid ain't mine but it is proof:

15 coal? Are you joking?
Most veins have at least 15 coal

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
It seems like this could be 2 veins at the edge of a chunk, as there can only be one vein of diamond per chunk i think.
