I've often thought that sponges would be a nice feature in Beta (though obviously the coding would need to be changed).
Maybe make it so that they spawn naturally underwater, but when mined are actually a wet sponge, which can then be dried in a furnace to make dry sponges, which would have similar effects to the old sponges. However, maybe make it so that over time, they would convert back to wet sponges (so they couldn't be used permanently). Maybe make them unstackable, and perhaps even make it possible for them to be used as buckets. For instance... maybe make it so if you place a wet sponge so that it isn't in the water, it is replaced immediately by a water source, and a dry sponge is dropped- maybe the furnace drying would just be a shortcut so you don't have to worry about a bunch of water sources lying around. I think the biggest issue is that they would be overpowered, so making them temporary- giving the player enough time to build a wall around underwater structures, or to fix an accidental leak, seems like a good balancing mechanism.
Edit: While building underwater is harder, what bothers me is that the only way to really build underwater in the game as it is now is to fill in the area where you are building, build the thing, and then replace the water. Its hardly building underwater at all- its building above water with some tedious and distinctly unclever grinding preceding it.
So, a quick dry out that immediately yields a wet sponge? I like that idea.

What? That's how you currently build underwater? Talk about overkill. Sure it requires a little skill/experience but you can build underwater without removing the entire body of water and replacing it later.
True, sponges exist as in-game placeable blocks. There would just need to be some new coding so as to sponge water up differently. Perhaps a system where it can absorb a certain amount of water, as a delay of sorts for water currents?
Nah. They wouldn't be very useful, if at all, and where would they go? It's not like they would fit very well underwater, considering they'd suck out all the water around them....
this is why you implement 2 different types of sponge blocks. wet, and dry. the wet ones are generated underwater. when you break them, you are given a dry one. basically, one bloock with the water removing physics, and one without.

Give me an internet, or Chuck Norris will kill you!!!
Make a huge scale Spongebob Squarepants model. That would be sick. But i'm not gonna go on some huge petition, Notch has more important plans for the game.

Correct. Try use sponge in classic minecraft, Find water and test.
I'm really not looking forward to my project after seeing what it took to empty out a deep water area just so one of our members could dig.
Sponges in some way or another would be appreciated. I would make them kind of like cacti...1-2 blocks high and capable of being harvested. 3 (or more) harvested sponge blocks in the crafting table could make a usable sponge. By doing it this way, harvested sponges wont empty out an area when replanted and it makes it possible for people to farm or keep an area looking nice (unlike flowers, for example).

I know perfectly well how it works in classic. That is why I said "differently".

I zap people. I zap them in the head, feet, hands, arms, eyes, ears and their genit.....
Whoops!

when you collect and bring them to surface they dry, and can be used as in classis

but when they are too long surrouded by water, they become wet and water surrouds them
Many good things come from Sweden, like minecraft and.... umm.... did i alredy say minecraft?
if u put redstone in jukebox, will it play redzone?
Correct. Try use sponge in classic minecraft, Find water and test.
I think they should be two types of sponges, wet sponge, and dry sponge.
You randomly find wet sponges at the bottom of the ocean, then you can smelt it into a dry sponge, which works like a normal sponge.
So yes, I want sponges.
