I know they used to be in some version or other of Mincraft but were removed. Do you want them back in? WOuld you even use them?
Myself, I don't think I wuld but can see how it'd make things easier for some people.

I'm a vegetarian....but not in minecraft.
Nah. They wouldn't be very useful, if at all, and where would they go? It's not like they would fit very well underwater, considering they'd suck out all the water around them....

I can see them being a bit usefull in underwater construction, as removing blocks under there takes forever. They could also be used to make emergency air bubbles if you run low (Place, catch breath, retrieve, drown some more)
I think sponges should be added back in, but shouldn't effect spring blocks. (meaning if you put one on the bottom of the ocean, it wouldn't remove the area around the sponge)

I suggest we adopt a xenophobic attitude towards this clearly deadly threat.
We need to quarantine any infected individuals to prevent this plague from gaining a foot-hold.
In Creative mode, Water spreads horizontally and downwards by duplicating itself to empty squares. Water spreads faster than the speed of a walking player, and if left alone covers everything at or below the level the water started at if there is a direct connection. Water is transparent and slows down the player if it is moving through it. Water cannot spread within a five-by-five area of Sponge (two blocks on each side and diagonally, with the sponge at its center); this enables it to be cleaned up quickly using sponges.
Sponges SHOULD be added because i hate smelting all that glass for underwater tunnels, plus you need more space, plus it wouldn't look as good as it did if you used sponges. In my opinion, sponges rocked in classic, and they'll rock in survival.

Gold should be used to create statues of Bas Rutten who will silently judge you from across the room. However if you connect it to a mechanism with redstone it is capable of stabbing people in da liver upon activtion.
Uh, I guess so. Maybe you could find a 16-32 pack of them in a dungeon occasionally. It seems like it could be useful, but I'm not entirely sure. They were only there in creative so that you could remove water due to griefers and underwater construction. When water was changed to "finite" (I remember the switch :3), sponges were removed due to the fact that notch thought no one could easily grief a whole world with water anymore, but he forgot about underwater construction.
Better to have it and not need it then to have it and need it.

I understand the desire to use sponges for underwater construction but isn't that a bit over powered? With the current settings in the game it is possible to build underwater... it's just difficult. Personally, I think it should be difficult. Until Mojang starts adding hostile water mobs (sharks?) underwater is one of the safest places for a stronghold. If sponges are returned to the game they'll be nothing more than a crutch to make the game easier. I've seen plenty of underwater bases and underwater tunnels constructed without the use of sponges to lead me to believe that they are unnecessary.
I've often thought that sponges would be a nice feature in Beta (though obviously the coding would need to be changed).
Maybe make it so that they spawn naturally underwater, but when mined are actually a wet sponge, which can then be dried in a furnace to make dry sponges, which would have similar effects to the old sponges. However, maybe make it so that over time, they would convert back to wet sponges (so they couldn't be used permanently). Maybe make them unstackable, and perhaps even make it possible for them to be used as buckets. For instance... maybe make it so if you place a wet sponge so that it isn't in the water, it is replaced immediately by a water source, and a dry sponge is dropped- maybe the furnace drying would just be a shortcut so you don't have to worry about a bunch of water sources lying around. I think the biggest issue is that they would be overpowered, so making them temporary- giving the player enough time to build a wall around underwater structures, or to fix an accidental leak, seems like a good balancing mechanism.
Edit: While building underwater is harder, what bothers me is that the only way to really build underwater in the game as it is now is to fill in the area where you are building, build the thing, and then replace the water. Its hardly building underwater at all- its building above water with some tedious and distinctly unclever grinding preceding it.
I would totally use them, the only reason I haven't had an underwater home is because it's be rather difficult to clear out all that water.
Also, they wouldn't have to be common either, maybe one or two near each-other on the bottom of the sea.
They could also be set to only make a 3x3 air bubble instead of 5x5, which would be definite overkill.

Really? What changes were made?

Try placing sponge in a body of water in Classic
You heard that, green and red.

(10/5/15) If you want to have a laugh, go look at some of my posts from back in ~2010 ( i was 10/11 what can i say)
(02/12/21) cannot believe i still play this game
The information is very easy to find: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Water
Way back when, when water spread, it formed new full blocks, which made it really easy to flood entire worlds, which is why sponges were needed.

It sounds like it could be useful.
