I'm going to make a "Bedrock & Roll Nightclub" and I want it to be dimly lit with only redstone torches. Will I have to brighten it up to make sure no mobs spawn on the bedrock?

monsters spawn anywhere it's dark, not counting liquids I believe.

Mobs spawn on anything but glass/half blocks.

Dang it. I was hoping bedrock might be a special exception to the transparency rule.

You could use glass and then you could have it as dark as you want.

I suggest a half-block floor. Looks better than glass, no mobs, and as much fire as you want! :smile.gif:
Also, amybe hook up the redstone torches to a clock?

Redstone torches actually light the room so it's just above 7, the minimum lighting for mobs to spawn.

Use a glass floor just on top of the bedrock, it'll give off the feeling, but you won't have to worry about monsters. plus, you could do a pretty sweet dance floor with the glass and colored wool :tongue.gif:

or you could just set the difficulty to peaceful... just sayin'

Use glass, they don't spawn on that. Plus you can make flashing lights underneath the glass.

Well I already dug it out, and its mostly glass, but I let the bedrock expose for just the top layer of it. Here's a pic of it (Regular torches are temporary):


There aren't many exposed patches, so hopefully mobs won't be much of a problem.

Has the half-step update changed the spawn behaviors for half-steps? I had a large branch-mine on level 13, and I covered the entire floor in cobblestone half-steps, but slimes still spawned in the mines.

Maybe it's just because slimes are a bit different from other enemy mobs (they spawn in light too), but still, keep in mind that half-steps might not necessarily be 100% safe either.

I am pretty damm sure than they do spawn on Ice.

Bedrock is indestructible. It's a Hard Rock. I think we all know what your next underground cafe should be named.

Monsters will never spawn on any solid block that has any transparency on any part of it.

Ice
Glass
Monster Spawner
Leaves (Fancy)
Half-Slabs
Stairs
Cake
Bed
Door
Cactus
Water
Lava

Also, slimes are jerks who break rules, so it's possible this may not apply to their unique spawning. I've never personally seen them spawn on any of these places though.

Actually the light they emit is 7 and you need 8 or above to stop spawning, so no they don't stop spawning.
