So I'm trying to build a sink that leads to a 2x2 hole. The water cannot overflow into the hole, it has to stop just dead of the hole. I'm going to be experimenting, but I was wondering if anyone had some experience with this sort of set up or similar and could offer me advice?
You have the correct setup, water can only flow 8 spaces before it stops, and if there is a drop at the 9th space (like you have) items will fall down into that hole.

Dude that's a canal not a sink. I need the water to go all the way around. is this possible without confusing the water flow?

I don't get what you mean.

This man really is a genius. Never have i seen such a clear and well written forum post.
No no, LIKE A SINK. You know you pour water into it, and it runs into a BASIN, which has a HOLE in it.
The BASIN is the water (or more accurately I suppose the structure below that supports such a water flow), and the HOLE is my drowning trap, which is also incidentally a hole. I was wondering, if I could instead use a basinesque design, instead of a conventional water conveyer system on the trap floor. It doesn't appear possible without messing up the waterflow or a messy floor design.
The graphic was to show you how close I needed it to get to the hole, though in hindsight its just confusing.
*facepalm* can somebody close this thread? I solved it already, and no one seems to understand what I'm looking for.
For the record: I UNDERSTAND BASIC WATER PHYSICS in Minecraft.
Wait, why would you want to do that? The mobs won't spawn in your basin if the entire floor is water.

Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. (Source)
Anything built within Minecraft, using only Minecraft, without using bugs, is legit.
If you don't want to build mob traps, that's fine. Just don't tell us it's cheating.
Basically, he wants a funnel, or a whirlpool, or something like that, and is now getting frustrated and is on the verge of calling everyone in this thread idiots because he has failed to properly explain himself up until two posts ago..
So you're going to dump them into the basin to watch them flail around before falling into the grinder?
I like this idea.
Hmm.
Have you tried perhaps a 10x10 room (sans corners, otherwise you just get a floor made of water source blocks) with water sources along the edges and the 2x2 hole in the center? Dunno if that would flow the way you want it to, but maybe?

THANK YOU. So glad to see intelligent people on this forum.
Yes. Yes, you do. If you want anyone to be able to help you, you need to actually explain what it is you want, and just saying the word "sink" doesn't cut it.

That's mean spirited. I explained it perfectly well. Even if the word funnel didn't come to me right away. I didn't ask for a canal or conventional water conveyer of any kind. Otherwise I'd have said so.

It's not at all.
Not everyone has a window into your mind. 'Sink' could have been explaining the shape, or mechanics, or any number of other things. I was confused until you said funnel, because from the info in your first post, yes, a canal or waterway was exactly what it sounded like you wanted.
And, Silent, the only one overreacting or taking it too far in this thread is the OP.
17x17 square. Tha put the buckets of water on all the edges. The water will stop at the middle LIKE A SINK DRAINNING!! Make a room under the sink that is also filled with water so the mobs drown. That is it!! Easy as that. . .

Yep, and I didn't think of the word funnel until too late. Also I already showed that I was quite capable of building a canal. Notice how its 8 blocks of water?
I tried the square design, all it got me was a lake o_O Should I try again?
Edit: look it doesn't excuse anything, but I'm tired. Moreover instead of looking at a given example of a canal and then suggest a cannal is probably not the best approach. Might I suggest asking for clarification. The first productive and intelligent post was the first person who suggested that they were confused. The first helpful person was Lythiaren.
By "dead of the hole" I mean this

Also, it doesn't seem possible unfortunately.
