I've been trying to find something like this for a while. I seem to remember this one post from forever ago, when I was a lurker, that showed the most effective use of space containing a double chest, bed, furnace, and workbench. None of which were in the floor, and it was before doors, so where you would stand you couldn't be shot by a .

Now that being said. Ponies.
Usually, if I am near a large body of water, I harvest a bunch of sand/soil/etc throughout my first day, and then move out into the water and make a nice safe monster-free base there. If I am no where near water, then I will usually try and make a base on top of a large mountain, and away from trees as things enjoy spawning on top of trees and then suicide bombing me when I walk out (spiders are notorious for this).
As far as the design goes, it's never the same. If it was, it'd be boring.

Fire And Ice

And would suffice
As an extension, and if you weren't planning on moving somewhere else, you could skip the chests and put the furnace and workbench there, digging a staircase down where they were to start with and expanding underground with the hut as your above ground little work station.
Also, for the nomads out there, you can always skip the whole walls thing and go for...

(underground three by three, only takes a minute to dig out and set up so that you can spend almost all your time exploring instead of worrying about shelter. As an added bonus, you will eventually end up with plenty of dirt to do something with and all of the elements other than the glass (Which is very simple to make if you have any amount of trees and sand near-by at any point in your travels) can be reused each night so long as you have your pick)
I usually try to make a wood house as big as I can, because usually I just use it an entrance to my underground empire; the biggest upgrade I'll normally make is giving it brick or cobblestone walls.

If you don't manage to have time to go slap a sheep though, you do kind of have to just stand there for ten min.
