I take tools, wood, chests, lava, water, and some other stuff.
then, i mine in a tight spiral downward and when i hit bedrock, i start branching along the spiral' leaving a down ward slope.
this design allows me to flood the place when i'm done or not currently using it because of mobs.(i like to keep my torches )
If you flood it, won't the torches go to the bottom of the staircase? Then you would have to go down and mobs could spawn above you.
I mean when I leave the mine. if I go back in for whatever reason after I am totally done with it, I take weapons and
Lava to kill mobs if needed.
Also, I REMOVE the torches
...on the way up
Waterladder down to level 10 to avoid the lava, a room every three blocks down, every room contains a branch mine thats got a main 3x3 hallway 80 blocks out from my waterladder, and each branch goes out 16 blocks, a torch every ten blocks. Every floor is completed by the time I abandon the mine, and every abandoned mine gets turned into a massive mob grinder.
Sure, I miss a few levels due to stopping above lava, but my branches aren't interrupted by lava pools.
I mine diagonaly.
Don't ask me why I just like it.

Dig a 3x2 tunnel down to level 6, dig a network of 3x2 tunnels and then branch mine out of those every 4 blocks. Not as effective for getting every bit of ore, but more efficient in terms of getting ore per amount of rock removed. Then repeat at level 9, level 12, level 15 and level 18.
Mine the block thats 1 block far and walk to the block that was below the one you mined (unless there was lava or something else that was dangerous) and repeat.
i made a whole thread about my own little technique, its the best mining method ive ever found. it has by far the highest return of diamonds/minute over any other method ive seen posted by others(ive tried them all). link is in my sig, includes a video tutorial someone made of it.
but dont take my word for it...

At layer 12 I've found 69 diamonds in 35 minutes. This is an amazing revelation for me. Also, I have countless stacks of obsidian now. Thanks for this OP.

This forum has made me decide that I now want kids, so that when they get old enough, I can forbid them from coming here. it's a terrible place.
I dig a staircase that is only one block wide and big enough for me to go into and go down. Then I just keep going until I stumble upon a (usually deep) cave.
Stairs down to bedrock, go up 3-5 blocks from bedrock, super speed mining to the right till I stumble across a natural cave, mine all resources out of natural cave, expand the cave in all directions, spend 38262754 hours trying to find my way back, finally find surface by just digging all the way up one block, spend 10-15 minutes finding my house again.
Everytime. But hey, the :Diamond:'s don't lie baby :iapprove:.

im unsure why this quote is here...
If I don't have coal yet (which sometimes happens in SMP), I just mine as much stone as I can while still in sunlight.

To keep it safe and aesthetically pleasing (to a point) I prefer to make long tunnels.
Sure, I miss a few levels due to stopping above lava, but my branches aren't interrupted by lava pools.
i would but :SSSS:= .........
not worth it....

2. dig a 5x5x100 tunnel in the four directions
3. ??????

I'm also a big brancher;I have several bases and they're all connected via mines. I even have a mine outside my spawn that leads to my house. XD
but dont take my word for it...
The BEST way to mine diamond, layer 12 and you.
EDIT: When cave exploring, I get rid of all the dirt and cobble there is, even if it takes ages. There's usually goodies hiding :happy.gif:
