What I build in survival depends wholly on what my surroundings are. If I'm in a jungle or roofed forest, I make a tree house. If I'm in a swamp, I make the sort of hut witches used to live in. And if I'm in a normal plains biome, I make a normal, square house. There isn't that much specific planning though.
Sometimes, yes. I'm doing that in MCPE right now with my houses because of some issue with the latest updates, some resources are very hard to find, like certain types of woods and dyes, and so I need to manage certain resources more carefully than in the PC version. Like in my current world, the only roofed forest I could find is about 6 in-game days away. I brought back 17 dark oak saplings and 4 stacks of logs from my trip there. I've been using a lot of those logs for bridges around my jungle base but when i went to build my second house in the neighboring taiga, I decided I'd try to use all spruce instead of dark oak, as spruce is easily for me to get--but in Creative, i hated the all-spruce version and liked the spruce logs/dark oak planks version far better. I also could test out what color of stained clay i liked so I wouldn't go waste my dyes and clay.
For PC I usually do anything redstone in Creative first or anything involving materials I don't build with very often. I mean, I love the challenge of building things in Survival mode, it's why I do it, but It can be seriously exhausting and discouraging to build something really ambitious in Survival only to have to tear it all down because it didn't work. And also I don't have hours and hours to waste on that. But I'm doing that less and less preplanning in Creative now on PC as my confidence as a survival builder grows. However I wish I had planned out this latest project in my vanilla world in Creative first: I'm creating a command block hub to /tp me to different regions of the map, and I was really set of the hub being within a sphere. But I built the entire sphere out of glass--in Survival mode, on pillars atop a mountain peak--and I ended up hating how it looks with all glass. So I've been trying to sort out a fix that doesn't involve me breaking 1200+ glass blocks in midair. Not to mention all the time I spent collecting the sand and the coal I used to smelt all that glass... *sigh*
I let the natural flow of the land dictate my builds mostly. I once built my base inside a cave near the surface, and I used its natural flow to build most of my rooms and hallways. Thats not to say I don't make things totally from design, but most structures I kinda just let them evolve as I need them. Some conflicts do arise, but I work through them.

Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.

Ouch, that sucks
I only really used creative mode to test out possible functions for builds, but other than that I just build things in survival on the spot.
I used to do this a lot, but now I usually just run through my head what I want, and then build it. I usually only use creative to test redstone devices and such. I currently have about 5 superflat worlds that I've devoted just to testing stuff.
Occasionally I test stuff out before but most of the time my attitude is more to the tune of "WEEEEEEEEEEE! LETS BUILD SOME STUFF!" That's worked out pretty well so far. I'm very efficient at gathering resources so it's not a huge problem to waste a few hits of a diamond tool to undo something.

definitely, i also use schematica which is a good mod that allows you to use schematics to create an outline of what you want to build. it doesnt actually import the schematic

NEW SERVER OPENING UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
your going to need hamachi to join the beta. soon the server will go public and get a dedicated ip.
in the beta anyone can join aslong as you have hamachi, you also get a good chance at becoming staff for OsirisCraft.
hamachi details are as follows
Network name: Osiris-Craft 1
Network Pass: 123
if a network becomes full i will create a new one and update this page as soon as possible.
I start most things in my PC survival world. Then during my workday, on break or lunch, I'll recreate whatever I'm working on in MCPE. There I'll fine tune and tweet things. But when I'm home, if I've got the time to play, I'm all about PC survival.
I certainly do now; I tore down my large house (four towers of 6x6x15) because I didn't like the design later on and it was impractical. I also plan my advanced redstone projects like automatic farms in creative first.

I used to just build strictly in survival, but the longer I've played the bigger I've wanted to build in survival. And even though it takes more time to build it in creative and then build it again in survival, I like that I get to fine tune the design before using my hard earned resources. I'm just getting to where I can tackle bigger builds with confidence. =^) I also agree with the MCPE comment, if you're away from the computer and have down time, it's a great way to get your thoughts out.
I plan out only redstone devices, just to make sure I can actually build them. Other than that, I just wing it.

My avatar-Madison Gotha. She knows various weapons, she's a mage/sage, and is somewhat immortal. Madison has the capability of taming and communicating monsters, a genetic trait passed down by her father. 26 physically, 1400-something mentally, and a Lofty Peakian/Zenithian mix. Doesn't really like being called an elf and hates being called human..
I might be Moderator, but don't bother treating me too special. And don't make tons of Ban Hammer jokes, please. Also, I'm an Off-Topic only Mod. Don't ask me to lock a thread or something if it's not in the off-topic
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I definitely do my builds better when I plan them out in creative first. I just built an awesome starter house in my world which I actually built 3 different times before hand in creative, slightly different each time (the original, one which was 2 blocks skinnier than the original, and one a block taller than the original) until I was happy with how it looked. If I would have built it without planning it, I can already tell that it would have looked odd.
However, some things rely on the environment around you which will effect how you build it, so you can't really plan stuff out like that ahead of time too well. What I have been doing recently to get around that, is making a copy of my world, going into creative on the copy, and then planning / testing it out within my world (without actually cheating in my real survival world)
Need a good universal mob farm? Check out the Double Shift Towers. Designed for 1.9 and gets 22,000 Items / Hour with a very simple redstone set up - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL8aoJpjjgU
