Notch a while ago, decided he wanted a new mob, he tries to create this mob, but decides that it wouldn't really add anything to the game, he makes code about it not spawning, and removes the textures. Later on, the OP makes a world but his Minecraft world is corrupted one day, somehow. He starts hearing the breath.ogg that was going to be the mobs sound, before the mob was barred from spawning. He lets world loose for people to find it, and cole, somehow finds this mob. But the texture's were deleted so it shares them partially with that of a sapling and a slime, and colour coded itself, as the mob was going to be able to have a "chamelon" effect. Which lead to it being hard to spot against grass. Eventually, everyone starts thinking up explanations, such as programming that refrences to other sources to spawn it, but it's actually internal progamming, and the reason people cannot find it in the source code or textures, is that the texture was removed, and the code never actually states a mob, or it spawning, it's just "redundant" code. So only by looking at the code of the OP's minecraft folder would there be a chance to see if it exists.
Mojang do not frequent forums, are unwares of this, and don't make a statement or a fix.
That's my two pennies.

GUYS, IT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED FOR NOW THAT THIS DOES NOT EXIST. PLEASE STOP TRYING TO KEEP IT GOING, I WILL POST IF NEW EVIDENCE COMES ALONG.
@ducky I'm not trying to continue it, I'm giving my opinion.
First of I like robosprog's explanation, but I THINK that a mob has been programmed into a few select class files and the reason it won't show up in the various monster skins it was programmed pixel by pixel to prevent it being
EASILY seen so that unless you know what you're looking for you won't notice it, and as to why we didn't see an update it could be programmed to check the system clock before appearing/manifesting itself/effects causing the game not to update and things to still occur as said. In other words, notch and dock MAY have gotten together and added rana in little bits across several class files to be near invisible.
TL:DR : Rana
