Hey so im gonna quickly post this but my best idea for more octaves in minecraft would be this:
Since one note block only goes 2 octaves there could be:
normal note block (current one) <Flint is redstone>
Higher one (which would look the same but the model would be lighter in colour
And lower octaves (slightly darker in model)
Just an idea.
So whats your opinion do you like my idea or have a better one?
Well the different instraments all have at least 2 blocks that are needed. maybe take some of those extra blocks and assign the octave for that instrament to them.
Example: Planks make the same 2 Bass octaves, while a log may make it a higher 2 bass octave.

Limits create great art, plus minecraft isn't a midi editor, it's a survival sandbox game.
Minecraft is a game of anything you want it to be.
Its not only a survival game, its not only a sandbox game.
It can be a game of hide and seek, it could be a game of dungeon exploring.
Adding on to amazing things makes them more amazing my good sir.
I too like this idea, but maybe, and i'm just hoping, a mod or Notch will actually do this *Amazed* he would add a gui or mouse scroll so that you can specify the note or scroll back down instead or cycling back "up". Idk about this suggestion but it would help something out, maybe

I always lol when I'm taking the ladder up out my mineshaft and suddenly a cow hurtles past with a terrified moo and goes splat at the bottom.
