So I made a nether portal in my basement earlier. As I was mining in the mine, I began to hear a low grumbling sound. I came back up to the basement and lo and behold, a zombie pigman was wandering around.
First question: Did it actually go through the nether portal to my world?
Second question: If I kill it, will his homies storm the portal?

Yes things can travel through nether portals now besides the player. All mobs can do it, if they stay within the portal long enough. If you kill him, you might anger the others, but they will only hurt you in the nether, not come after you.

He didn't go through the portal, as the nether chunks aren't loaded, but he spawned at the portal. Nether portals act as pigman spawners now (though a spawn is rare).
ZombiePigMan can come through Nether Portals and in fact DataLess258 on YouTube has made a golden nugget farm with over 1000 Nether Portals for ZombiePigMan to come through. Man

He didn't actually come THROUGH the portal, he just spawned near it. Zombie Pigmen can spawn near overworld portals, and (rarely) ghasts if its a very large portal. Killing him won't anger his buddies in the Nether.
If you kill him, the others in the Nether won't even know, so you're safe. And a ghast can't go through a portal because a portal is only 2 blocks wide and 3 blocks tall. I know skeletons and creepers can go through portals (one time as I was returning home from the Nether, a creeper appeared at my portal. Since creepers don't spawn in the Nether, it must have come though the portal from the overworld).
Mods only act like they came through the portal. In a single survival world the neither is not loaded so they can not come through. If the mob is pushed through then the mob is frozen until the chunk is loaded.

Actually, in either 1.7 or 1.8 (I can't remember, I think it was 1.7) you can make your portals bigger so ghasts would be able to fit through.
But as for them doing it naturally, no mob will go through the portal unless you are in that dimension, then they will be on the other side only when you are too.
Also, Pigmen do spawn around portals naturally, it did not go through.

Ever had something (or somebody) on your railroad that you did not want there?

Mathelete light up your neither portal.
That was a while ago, more than a year ago, in 1.4.7. But I'm curious, which side are you referring to? Should I have lit up the Nether side or the overworld side? Note that I was in the Nether, about to return, and as I arrived at the portal (which was at the end of a hallway through netherrack), a creeper came.
Also, villagers can go through portals. Once you enter the Nether, you can see that villager there, and you will have to push him back into the portal (where he will disappear, and not reappear until you return through the portal yourself).
Yeah, pigmans can come thru portals. To stop them from coming to the normal world, you might want to build a protected base around your portal in the nether.
you could light up your overworld portal, but that will not stop zombie pigman from spawning. Or you could light up your neither portal to stop overworld from spawning in the neither.
For my SSP world I have a nice purple stained-glass and quartz block theme as a small hub, (I also use it for transport).
So yeah, as TheFlamingWombat said, you need a small base around.
P.S I would make it out of cobblestone if it is in an area where Ghasts' can spawn because fireballs from Ghasts' cannot break cobblestone which helps so that you don not need a flint and steel everytime you go there.
Although this can be used for cool farms (the ZombiePigMan spawning I mean) like Dataless822's ZombiePigMan farm.
You could also try JL2579's HUGEnether portal idea to make an even more efficient farm than Dataless822's farm.

So it's the other side of the portal that you have to light up. Because in 1.4.7, my base had a room that was made entirely of glowstone, and the Nether portal was in it, but sometimes pigmen came through. I didn't think lighting it up on the other side affected things. I didn't think pigmen spawning even depended on light levels.
The way pigman farms work is there is a small chance for every portal block that it could spawn a pigman. So when making these massive portals for farms, you are increasing the chances for one to spawn. Same rule applies for your house - It didnt walk through or any of that crap because the nether isnt always loaded, he simply spawned within the portal.
