Yeah, I just installed one of abra's Spider Filters (TM), and so far it seems to be doing a LOT better. I'll test it over a longer time-frame to be sure, but already it seems more productive.
I've also noticed, though, that after the server has been running for awhile (playing on my own SMP server), friendly mobs seem to get fewer and far between. I logged on today, and never once saw a cow spawn, and only saw maybe a couple of other non-hostile mobs over a large area. I restarted the server and it seems better, but still odd. Are they spawning somewhere random and getting stuck or something?
the animals may be spawning in places you cant see, or perhaps most of them are ending up squids and you're just missing them?
within that 150x150 area, there can be up to 20 animals. if Im guess right. if some are squids, that'll take down the 'visible' passives down by a bit. (since they are harder to see, they are more probably the culprit >.>)
as for "abra's Spider Filters (TM)" good to hear that you found something to help your trap.
unfortunately that wouldnt help my trap as either box (9x74x74 approx) only have 1 chute in the center. obstructing any corner would be worse for me :sad.gif:
but after the spawning became constant, the output is fine that I dont have to worry about drastic modifications.

and i have good news to report ^^
remember how i mentioned traveling out to find a new location to build another mob trap... well that didn't happen, A.D.D kicked in and i started renovating my house, and building a laboratory instead. *thumbs up*
BUT
when i finished all that fun stuff, i started thinking about how Xuro fixed his mob grinder and spent some time looking around at the cave systems under my original trap. Then i remembered i had about a house full of storage chests packed full of dirt from a previous project and said to myself "F**K it, im just going to fill it all in." And i did... took me about 16 hours WITH my x-ray vision texture pack on to fill in each and every cave (with the exception of the lava pools at the very bottom) in the 144x144x...um.. however deep it is from sea level to just above lava. whatever!
in short, its all solid, so nothing can spawn anywhere BUT in my trap... or squids spawning in the ocean, but they're cool, so they can do that. =]
after i finished, i tried it out.. mobs spawned like before... then stopped after 15mins... after cussing for a few minutes, turned around and saw a bunch of spiders stuck in my filter, clogging it up. Then remembered about the new spawn cap... SO i installed a new spider filter. If anyone thinks of Johnny Cash when they see this, your awesome.
HAHA spiders! HAHA! (note, this kind of filter is for if you don't want much thread.)
after installing that, spiders no longer gave me grief, and mobs spawned and spawned and spawned and spawned!
after a ruff calculation, im getting approximately 500 items/hour. Which i am absolutely happy about. And no sign of slowing down so far after waiting 2 hours!
So as a reassurance to what Xuro has already solved, IF ANY OF YOU are having the problem of having mobs not spawn for you, you have to make sure they can't spawn anywhere but IN your trap in at least 144x144 range around your afk spot. Also, spiders clogging up your trap will also stop other mobs from spawning, so devise a way to kill them too. GOOD LUCK!
random info:
- took a little over 6 large storage chests full of dirt to fill in all the caves.
- whenever i see a cave now, i have a unnerving subconscious need to try and fill it in now.
- decided to use some diamond tools.... and OH MY GOD!
- mobs in water and touching fire constantly get set on fire, taking a steady stream of damage... its funny.
- very funny.
5. another off topic thing: I'd take screenshots of my trap if i could, but I have no idea where minecraft sends all my screenshots (80% of them were me accidently hitting f2)
So they're in C:\Users\"user name"\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft then there should be a folder (<--- that's for windows 7/ vista I don't know for XP)
even my search didnt't want to find it i somehow managed to bypass that crap though :biggrin.gif: thanks

First off, Congratz on finally getting your trap fully operational! (SW reference there :biggrin.gif:)
.Unfortunately, I don't know if spiders are clogging my trap or not. if they are, then I don't notice it much. but I do get string....
.again, Unfortunate as it is, I can't seem to figure out how to post the screenshots I took of my trap/chute to death etc.
.16 hours is a lot of time, and that was a lot of dirt.
.told you diamond tools were good :tongue.gif:
and this information helps clarify what the issue is, however, This is not yet conclusive, and does not explain farmland animals not spawning as much.
great work :tongue.gif: lol
Ima add ya as a friend so if I find a nother prob, I can ask you about it :smile.gif:

anywho.. took my first screenshot and noticed MC creates a screenshot folder in its directory ".minecraft" folder. I use winXP, but i haven't a clue how to find the .minecraft folder on win7.
best way to probably go about finding it on either operating system is when you start up minecraft and get to the main menu, there should be that button for Mods and Texture Packs. Click that, and in the next screen, there should be a button on the bottom left labeled Open Texture Packs Folder. Click that, and it'll have your OS bring up that folder in a new window. Once that pops up, just click the Up Folder button thing, and you'll be in the .minecraft folder directory. the Screenshots folder should be there too.
as for posting the actual images here on the forum, you'll have to upload them to the internet somewhere first, and use the url to insert between the bbcodes.

not to sure just how you have your trap set up, but i do know that spiders can't climb up ladders or signs, only actual solid blocks. they also can't climb upside down on roofs. Hopefully this info can help in a way.
With how i have my spider filter set up, if the spiders decide they don't want to climb, they'll get pushed by the water into the bottom ring of fire. If they climb, they'll go up and into the top ring of fire, since i have a roof just above the fire.

Not to sure about the passives...as i understand with land passives, they only spawn on well let grass blocks. Light level 9+ ... does their pop cap share with the aggressives? Seeing as how the all mobs seamed to vanish entirely, it would be hard to say... the problem with having all the caves messing up the spawning algorithms, it could have been messing up the passives as well. but since my situation is based under an ocean.. i can't be of much help to figure that one out atm.
Since i haven't had any overwhelming need to grind up passives, i don't really see a need to make a trap for them. BUT, if i was going to.... hmm. Id make a trap up in the sky, preferably over a wide ocean, open roof so sunlight during the day can help, only grass blocks with the exception of water if used to avoid unwanted baddies. Since passives tend to float on water, a drowning pit wont work. Lava blades might work best, or Cacti.
Try switching to Peaceful for a moment to despawn mobs, then back to your difficulty of choice.
Yes, it might be this.
Doesn't work
doing this only removes what mobs are around you, but doesn't reset the spawning algorithm for the area your in. To reset everything, you have to actually move far away enough to unload the chunks relative to your trap. Then head back, and everything will be reset. BUT if the actual problem as to why your spawning got messed up in the first place hasn't been dealt with, it'll only mess up again.

the uploading pictures problem is obvious now that you post how to, since I've never really posted pictures up on the net, save for DA.
oh well :sad.gif:
If spiders CANNOT, absolutely CANNOT climb ladders or signs, (which sounds silly if they can climb any other wall) Then perhaps I should coat my entire trap's walls with signs or ladders? lol I just harvested my Tree farm and got about 600 wood, then spent some more time farming and now have about 20 stacks of wood :smile.gif:
I tried in my sky trap to make a quarter specifically for grassland animals. I don't find it worth it. Killing them doesn't seem to be as simple as hostiles, drowning is possible, but dealing with water currents to force them under seems more trouble than it's worth. since, porkchops take up 1 slot each, (so afk is not really good here :sad.gif: ) cows give leather which is probably the only good thing. you lose sheep wool (if you like making awesome creations this is a big loss) and feathers are useless, and eggs dont get laid in water, or often enough to matter. also, squids will eventually eat up the passive count (20 from what I know) (hostile is 112, not shared)
either way, sheep are the only thing I'd worry bout, and I'd rather paint them my prefered colour than to putting them through a grinder and losing the wool. since porkchop healing is more of a pain than making a tiny wheat farm (you can get a large chest of wheat from 1 seed, with all the bones you've gathered up so far :sleep.gif: (lol for broken bonemeal)) feathers from chickens overlaps with the ubsurd amounts of feathers from the zombies, and cow leather can be replaced with iron..... if you have lots of iron :/
also: if you want to make a passive trap, cover well with torches, then they can continue spawning even during the wee hours of the night!

read up on those for more in depth information regarding how spiders interact with them. Im not so sure they 'can' climb the ladders, BUT the very bottom edge of the ladders act as a 'roof' and spiders get stuck on them.
Update:
I left my trap running AFK for 6 hours and collected less than 10 items. Out of frustration I deleted and reinstalled Minecraft. Problem solved. Could have been an issue with MinecraftAM? It works great now.

ARGH! I just read all of these posts including the OP :smile.gif: (ha can't get mad at me) and i cant be bothered to fill in the caves if it doesnt work, and yeah. It worked perfectly for 10 minutes, then just shut down. When i do peaceful then hard switch, it spawns 3-5 clumps of monsters then stops again. I tried using my minecart to go to my other base, and come back, (alot more than 144 blocks away) it still doesnt work. Can somebody please help? Or can we make a petition or something to ask notch to make the spawning algorithm so that it resets if you flick it to peaceful then easy?

as for Nihilias's problem resurfacing, I have no answer to that as I am not on her file, however. My mob trap that i lighted up all the caves is still pumping out 3650item/hr strong.
Have you trried using a texture pack to see if they are spawning at all? as you read, in my case 1 small cave under me was messing the whole thing up. found it with tnt, but now my bro gave me a texture pack for 'god vision'
I'm right now working on another trap on my club's smp server. It's 167x167x10 with 4 quadrants. I am leveling a lot of islands, and displacing the sea to make this, then I shall build a pyramid on top of it, and finally create a fake desert by removing the seas around it. and it will work.
the point is:
The type of trap doesnt really matter. it's the forcing them to spawn INSIDE your trap that counts. imo at least.
also, i'd recommend not building the trap on floor 16 or below.... since slimes are so buggy -_0 *(smp) and can clog your trap, and have more useless items
