HELLO!
I'm new!
If this is not the right place to post this please direct me to where I need to go.
*(search isn't working for me either, so just telling me to search it isn't gonna help me :sad.gif: )
I have been making monster traps for awhile, and had quite a bit of success. however, the problem I kep having is the output drops to 0 after a short while, (1h ish).
This makes going AFK not helpful :sad.gif:
I origninally thought it was my trap.
items getting to me ? yes
monsters that spawn gettting dead? yes
monsters spawning anywhere in sight? no (low res creates misty back drop to see silouhettes of monsters in my wide trap)
this problem persisted after my wide trap, into my tower trap, into my massive sky trap, and now my compact trap. (most roughly based on similar stuff to keirshar's designs.)
Now, I thought it had to do with my trap, and maybe It does, but even passive mobs are not spawning.
I ran blindly across my world for 2 day cycles (non-stop) before I finally found a chicken.
My sky trap is based on a lake/ocean. with a desert to the west, animals spawn on the few patches of grass i got there, yet, after being afk, NO animals, and NO monsters, and most importantly, NO ITEMS await me when I get back.
BEFORE you just say my trap is ****, I need to say that I got 500 items in 30 minutes, compared to about 40 items in the proceeding 3 hours. then nothing for another few hours.
TL;DR - MY TRAP WORKS!!!! for about 30 minutes. then NOTHING!! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!
Why is this?
Does anyone else suffer this same problem?
Does anyone have a solution?
Or am I just as alone here as I am in my world waiting at the base of my Sky trap? :sad.gif:
EDIT:
I am still curious as to any solutions to this issue, however by some odd occurence, my trap has been working for the last hour and a half!
I've been tossing out all the crap (feathers, arrows, bones) and keeping only the sulfur and string,
after approximately 1.5 hours, i've gotten around 18 stacks of sulfur, and 2.5 stacks of string.
(all figures roughly rounded)
Is this fixed? I don't know, I'll have to test this out more!

im experiencing the same problem.. although its been several real life days.. and my mobs still haven't started spawning again. Tried each difficulty.. still nothing. Haven't really tried to do to much about figuring it out though.. other then making a texture pack to see through walls just to see if mobs/passives were spawning somewhere i couldn't see. nothing...
i miss creepers .. hasn't been the same without them. u.u
I believe during a recent update, notch slightly tweaked all mob spawns to lower levels.
I've been reading about lower levels as well, but no monsters or passive animals is BS.
something is wrong. imo. if a person (not me, the guy above) uses a texture pack to look through walls and cant see anything at all, something is amiss.
and by something I mean mobs D:

lower levels huh? .. well when i did my 'see through walls' test. I was about 10 blocks under sea level.. not all the way down. Even though i could see all the way down there, i wasn't 'in range' for mobs to spawn down there. So give me a few minutes, and i'll reply to this on my findings.

lower levels as in less mobs overall/slower i think he means.
also, the distance that mobs CANT spawn around you is spherical, but the max distance they can spawn is a 128x150x150 rectangular prism with you at its center. (roughly)
so even if your 10 blocks below sea level (55) monsters can spawn at bedrock and at sky limit. even bedrock 74 ish blocks away.
I'm gonna blow the f*ck out of the ground area in my 150x150x128 cube to force all spawns inside my trap. hopefully will yeild better results, if i can figure out wtf is stoping my spawns >.<

OK... so this is what i've noticed:
waited a minute in my mob grinder to see if anything would spawn... nothing.
ran outside and over to my lil town to head down into the mines... saw a creeper waiting for me at the docks. I squealed in excitement to see my old friend again.. but quickly realized i had no means of preventing hes excitement from trying to give me a hug. .. anyway.
Got into my mine, and headed to where i had leveled out and area where i hit bedrock. Switched my texture packs, and waited... about 15 seconds later.. mobs started spawning around me, and way up above too.
Ran up top avoiding mobs, and i could see passives out and around on the surface.
Headed back to my grinder, and found a pack of skelies... but once again.. mobs stopped spawning again once i was in there. My trap is about 10-15 blocks under sea level.
Try switching to Peaceful for a moment to despawn mobs, then back to your difficulty of choice.
while this is not bad advice, and this sometimes works.
This is not helpful to my problem.
I thank you for your advice.
But my problem is that they stop spawning when I go AFK.
If the solution is to be not AFK, then that defeats the purpose of leaving my monster machine on while i go to class/sleep/etc.
with this working, perhaps there is a glitch in the monster spawning algorithm that my computer didnt catch?
if it's not a permanent thing, would it have to be bump in the coding?
I don't know java or programs for that matter :sad.gif:

Just tried digging to bed rock from my mob grinder, sat around down there for a while... couldn't see anything spawning around me... tried 10 blocks above bedrock.... nothing. 10 above that... still nothing. Not in my grinder.. not in miscellaneous caves around, close or far... devoid of life once again. im not sure whats going on now... any other suggestions that may be worth testing?

getting suggestions and/or answers is exactly why i made this post.
aside from flipping from peaceful back to normal, the only thing that has done it for me is to travel a great distance, then back again, enough for the 4 chunks to delete and restart the mobs.
however again, this is not practical for sitting afk at a mob spawner :sad.gif:
how do you make 'texture packs' Nihilias?
If i could TEMPERARILY make cobble act like glass and stone etc I could see if they are just getting caught, or if a cave is stealing all my mobs or what not.
my trap is huge, so some may have despawned before dying, i put one of the killing knives closer to the trap, and there was minimal improvement, but more tests need to be done to see if it actually improved.
but for now maybe i'll get some sleep :sleep.gif:

i've been working on my own texture pack for a while now, far from finished however. But since this thread isn't about texture packs, i'll just pm you about it, Xuro.
Noticed this too on our SMP. One fella with a mob tower that drops ~1500 items per hour saw that dwindle to nearly a tenth for most of yesterday and the day before. Server got backed up, taken down, restarted, no improvement.
I was working around my base, which has a grassy hill about 60x60 with torches, so it usually spawns 20-30 passive mobs at night that continually regenerate when killed. Last couple of days, saw less than 10 at any given time. I knew there had been an adjustment to mob spawns of some sort, but didn't expect that it would be drastically reduced.
Early this morning the mob tower kid says his mob trap is producing at normal rates again...was there a tweak just now? I am at work and can't get on to look.
I can tell something was changed recently, and changed again, because suddenly passive mobs are more scarce, and for some odd reason late last night or early this morning, at least hostile mobs numbers are increased.
I genuinely wish the blog or minecraft.net feed would give us a little more detail about what changed with each update/patch and how much it changed. For instance, a 10% decrease in mob spawning is a far cry from a 90% decrease in mob spawning, or an increase in hostile and decrease in passive.
Are there any players standing within 24 meters of the spawning area? I believe that for both single player and multiplayer, mobs will only spawn if they are within a 144x144 box of the player, but more than 24 meters away.
I'm not an expert on mob spawning, but I haven't seen any of you above give very good information on your spawning areas. Give exact dimensions, and say where you are standing if you want help. Say if you are on a multiplayer server, and state whether anyone else is in the area.
The thread linked above is locked (since it was in the alpha forum). All changes since the game entered beta should be in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1020&t=117374
If you have results that are different than what is there, then post there. People who take spawning very seriously should be watching that thread.
*points at self* that's where i came from, but no one seams to know whats going on there either.
as for myself, im playing on a single player map. I've put a somewhat detailed post on my mob grinder in the thread you mentioned. Im obeying all the new spawning rules as i understand it (might be missing something... wouldn't surprise me). Just nothings happening... so im guessing there's a bit of code related to this problem that hasn't been noticed, or its a bug.
Really though.. im just wanting all that sulfur to help with digging out a large chunk of land out for a project i've had on a hold since this problem first appeared... so until this gets fixed, or solved.. or whatever... *picks up a half ton of stone pickaxes*

Oh, sorry, I didn't realize that you had already posted there.
I've only built a mob spawner once, and it was in multiplayer. I made it quick, and didn't even bother making it over water or ice, so I know that I'm losing spawns to the area below mine. It seems to only work for about 2 day-night cycles before it goes cold, but I assumed it was just because of my hurried building approach.

Sorry Chezz, I suppose your not familiar with Kiershar's work.
My sky trap is on a lake, singleplayer, I stand in the middle at ground level, the trap is spread out at the top of the map in a 150x150x128 box (so the distance between me and the trap is around 40). I have lit up all the caves I've found, and decimated any land that I clipped when I made the box outline of where monsters spawn.
I get about 500 items / hour, for about 30 ish minutes, then monsters and farm animals stop spawning.
I don't know how much more specific you'd like. but being single player, I have not calculated anything with other players, assuming they dont jump through onto my offline play :tongue.gif:

Perhaps your difficulty changed if your not seeing any mobs. Peaceful difficulty has no mobs.
Thank you for for advice, however reading the OP would be helpful. as since Monsters CANT spawn on Peaceful, Monsters CANNOT STOP spawning after awhile, as they would never have started.
If you have any helpful advice I'd be glad to hear it.
