Hello everyone, i'll get straight to the point. I love the idea of beds being added if for nothing more than novelty, plus its a step in the right direction for move furniture. My problem is I fear adding beds makes the game a bit too easy.
Adding things like charcoal? Great idea, since it requires a fair amount of resources to get and its not always possible to find coal on your first, or even second night.
On the other hand, add a bed that allows you to completely skip night entirely and can be made within the first few moments of spawning. Don't get me wrong I really like beds and the idea of them..but perhaps make them a bit harder to make? or give them another function like resetting your spawn point or lets you slowly heal after so long.
well, really, when you think about it, when you use a bed, your probably just going to end up waiting in your base for several minutes anyways. and it's not like you can just plop one anywhere. and Plus, if your house isn't lit enough, you can still wake up to a :SSSS:.
But really, it just gets rid of tidum, not difficulty. And th ability to set your spawn with them is coming. maybe you can find some epic distant land in your let's play! =D

Actually, as long as you have one torch you can just dig a hole in the ground or mountain, plop a torch and cover it up and sleep. I do agree that it does remove a certain amount of tidum but now "Surviving your first night" tutorials is going to be "Punch a sheep, punch a tree, dig a hole and win"
*builds a pillar of dirt 30 blocks high underfoot* Done!
...
I really could go on. We could start with the fact that punching trees makes the game "too easy" because you can literally make every weapon, tool, and useful item with wood in a matter of seconds after spawning. How ridiculous shall we go here?
People that enjoy the addition of beds will use them. People that don't, won't. Why is this so hard to understand? This isn't a necessary item in the game, unlike things such as torches or a workbench. At best, it's a time saver. At worst, it's a home decoration.
People that want to use beds to avoid mobs will already have the game set to Peaceful, so that's irrelevant. Most people that use beds for other than role playing purposes, like myself, will use them to skip the god awful pain in the eye to see darkness so they can go about doing productive things, monsters in their midst or not.

Where as before they could've just been "dig a hole, jump in, cover the entrance, and win?" ... You don't need torches to survive the night, nor beds. Just a one x two hole in the ground to stand in.

Well if you do that, your not going to have much fun, are you. and you could just dig a random hole anywhere before, you just have less waiting. and If you want to have a good start for a map your going to be mining anyway.
Challenge? The challenge is fulfilling your dream in Minecraft, working on structures that would take an unimaginable amount of resources which you gather from places obviously filled with danger. Sure, the bed can make you skip a night, but you could instead spend that night in a cavern finding your beloved resources. Also, if you want more challenge...
Step 1: Turn the mode into Hard.
Step 2: Install Mob mods (Mo' Creatures, Human+, More Creeps and Weirdos, PrefixSkeletons, etc.) and the Nightmare Mode mod.
Step 3: *daytime, Mobspawner Skeleton from mountainside cavern that spawned a mob army* OHSHI-
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit.
I made a new world for the update, and I haven't made a bed yet.
I just don't need it. I have things to do. Instead of wasting my time going to bed and such, I just keep on with my indoor chores. Such as organizing, mining, etc...
Now, I haven't done anything outside really yet, and I'm sure I will make a bed at some point.
The thing is, Beds just speed up the process that is already there. Instead of going into my house and sitting afk for 10 minutes, or Digging a hole and waiting the night out... Notch just realized that people do these anyway, might as well make it official.
Sometimes I don't need beds, I'll just keep going through the night, but sometimes I'm building something outside in the daytime, and instead of downloading mods to allow me to make it daytime whenever I want, I can just go to sleep quickly and keep building.
It seems like its overpowered at first, but in reality it isn't. Those who use the bed in an overpowered fashion just don't enjoy the game anyway.

Have you ever stopped to think... and forget to start again?
I agree somewhat. I think they should be made a LOT harder to make. Like, you know your first night of Minecraft when you have just made your base and are hiding in it, scared out of your mind at the scary noises outside? This is one of the things that is really special about Minecraft, the realization that you are truly alone and the fear of what is to come as you get that very first taste that night.
Yeah, well that's all unnecessary. Just go punch a sheep.

No you didn't, because TNT damage doesn't stack.

an iron framed one that is uncomfortable so you only sleep for half the night
An a gold framed one that lets you sleep the full night
That's still really easy to get. You just have to reach near bedrock once for the gold one and iron is sometimes at the surface.
Some people might even prefer the iron version so they don't have to wait for darkness to end as long, but can still collect the mob drops/kill creepers when the sun comes up
My view on this situation is that allowing beds to be crafted so easily rips away that "first time playing Minecraft" experience for new players. For example, someone who read up on the wiki and such before playing their first world would be able to make a quick shelter just like normal, but then they make a bed. When it turns night, they use it, and it's day again. There is no experience of that feeling of being huddled up in your base, looking out the door at all the zombies and creepers roaming the land, feeling completely protected but still scared. Pretty much everyone should know this feeling from their first, second, or whatever night. To prevent this, beds should need more valuable resources, like iron. This would pretty much guarantee that new players wouldn't make it on the first night. It could be crafted like this:
That's still realistic because the iron could represent springs in the bed.

Lets see here... Minecraft's sole purpose is not to survive. Sure people can just dig a hole in the ground and cover, but whats the fun with that? No, the actual purpose of this game, of any game, is to have fun. Why buy a game, if you won't get entertained? I personally love beds. I mean, what happens when you get lost in the wild? Instead of waiting several minutes, you could simply put your bed down and skip doing nothing. Saves time and keeps us all entertained. Another thing, beds don't have to be used every single night. At night I do what needs to be done, then I sleep. So my point is, Minecraft is still how it was, just a bit enhanced.
People that enjoy the addition of beds will use them. People that don't, won't. Why is this so hard to understand? This isn't a necessary item in the game, unlike things such as torches or a workbench. At best, it's a time saver. At worst, it's a home decoration.
This, this, this. A million times this.
Just because I may not play the way YOU play, doesn't mean its wrong.
Er.... but beds dont change the difficulty whatsoever. At all. Period.
It was totally possible to "skip" the night BEFORE beds.
All you needed to do was dig a small way into a mountain and wall yourself up, or maybe just jump-build a tall stack of any sort of block. And then you just sit there for 7 minutes. That's it.
The ONLY difference between doing that, and using a bed, is time. You dont have to wait for 7 boring minutes.
Dont get me wrong: I love a challenge and it's one of the reasons why I play this game so much. But seriously, beds do not make the game easier. Just less time consuming. I mean, it's not like you're going to use a bed EVERY night. I only ever need to "skip" nights if I'm, say, transporting a rare item to a base, like diamonds, or if I'm trying to make a structure without having to stop and wait every 10 minutes.
And they DONT save you in caves, or in the Nether, both of which are alot more dangerous than the overworld.
I dont really think Notch has done much that has made the game easier. He didnt remove or weaken any dangerous mobs, for one.... instead he ADDED Ghasts (and the Nether, which itself is very dangerous) and gave Spiders the horrible ability to climb walls. The ONLY things that might make some bits of the game easier are the compass and watch, and I'm thinking they dont necessarily make it EASIER, but just take out unnecessary annoyance (like getting lost, which was always obnoxious).
I got into the game in early alpha, and if anything, it's gotten HARDER since I started. And also alot more INTERESTING.
Beds are what I would call a "quality of life" item, if that makes sense.
I will agree though, that maybe making them a little harder to make might be a good idea, but that's just me.
I don't see the issue either. Many of my first nights were spent in a small dug out hole in the wall, and a work bench so I could alt-tab out with and wait 7 minutes for the sun to rise.

Wait until DRAGONS are implemented. Your bed won't save you when the dragons burn a hole in the side of your house and EAT YOU.
