I don't mind the original texture for it. It really isn't all too ugly, it just has a higher contrast than some other blocks do, because of the outlines on it. I always use my own texture pack, though, so I haven't had to deal with ugly cobble in awhile.
to be honest I don't really care, rock and cobblestone have the same resistance, the only difference is aesthetic, but even then, what does it matter what they look like
Cobble is like rape for your eyeballs when it's the only material you use. It looks pretty good if you break up the cobblestone nightmare with other materials. I try to incorporate a plethora of materials in my constructions, going even so far as gussy up my mine shafts with wooden support beams.
Cobblestone doesn't bother me. It's plentiful and it can always be turned into smooth stone again, if you're not fond of it.

I don't know, but I do know that has always been the general consensus among the community.
I disagree, I really like cobblestone, smooth stone only really fits underground, or for sculptures. Cobble is so much better for buildings.
It's the same with gravel, no one seems to like it, but it is the best looking block in the game for making pathways and so forth.
I agree 100%. Underground, my structures are typically smooth stone, but above ground, I tend to use cobble with mossy accents.
Gravel makes for great castle walls, with a stronger stone behind it. If a creeper smells you on the other side and blows up, the gravel immediately sinks down, filling the hole so no one else can wander in while you safely add more gravel from the top to fix it.
I've heard of people using gravel to make their floors and pathways, but I won't go for it- mostly because I don't want to hear CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH when I'm just trying to walk around.
I'm so tempted to use cobblestone for stuff, because my texture pack makes it look really good- but stay away from it because I know it'll look horrible to other people.

^ Basically what I was gonna say. Smooth stone looks better for buildings in a modern-style wheres cobble is best for medieval - renaissance style buildings.
You could always go into the minecraft.jar and pull out the terrain.png. Copy the smooth stone texture over the cobble texture. Save it, and toss it back in the jar. Aesthetics issue solved.

It's a simple question really. I don't know why so many people complain about the look of cobblestone.
I gues i wasn't the only one. It's not so much I don't like the look of it when i build structures I'm not going to build t with loose rubble b/c that's really all cobblestone is it's just chunks of rock broken apart then thrown back together.
I prefer cobble simply because it's not 'natural'. When I build with it, my structures stand out better... usign smooth stone, makes it look too much like part of the landscape, which is ok, but if I build something, I WANT it to stand out, so I cobble everything. Just my personal tastes I guess.
The chances of one getting out of the cave, navigating around the hills unnoticed, making me see it, and then vanishing on its own are about equal to the chances of me getting laid.
Slightly more on topic, I don't mind cobble stone for a few choice projects--say, a wall, or maybe the facade of a cliff face building--though I agree it's an eyesore in large quantities. I read some people on the OCD thread saying they even use smooth stone to patch holes in their mine shafts; I could never waste my time smelting it for such a purpose. Sure, cobble may look tacky next to smooth stone, but it gets the job done. And it's not like my mines see the light of day, anyway...
I actually hate the look of smoothstone. It looks so bland.
Half steps at least have borders and cobblestone has it's lines, which give it contrast and therefore character, but smooth looks like wet, soggy, and pulped newspaper. Smooth also looks too natural for large structures, as if the castle wasn't built but just spawned. It really bugs me on a carnal level.
When everyone starts they always make a cobble castle/tower because it's the easy and obvious thing to do. Once you've seen x100000 of them it starts to get boring. People want creativity not just "oh hey I can pick stone building done!"
Mossy cobble stone on the other hand I like very much :happy.gif:
Me too, but I hate gravel as a block. I don't usually use it for its texture because I hate it as a block too much.
