All along I used random seeds but recently I got Amidst and have been looking at many random seeds to find good ones. If you do a random seed you might have to travel several thousand blocks or more to find biomes that you want to find if you ever even find them. You could spawn in the middle of a huge desert or mesa with no trees anywhere nearby. I had to go over 7k blocks away from spawn to find ice spikes.
I think I have my next seed picked out. It has a mushroom island at -614 -4 with a stronghold on it.
I typically go with a random seed, mainly because it adds more to the exploration side of things. It also makes it a lot more fun when you find something incredible.
I usually just use whatever word might be on my mind, like my current world I think I used Fiore or Natsu for since I had just finished watching season 1 of Fairy Tail. That is how I primarily came up with most of my survival world seeds.
I do not create so many worlds I could say what I usually do. When 1.7 was coming out I created couple of worlds with random seed, had problems with finding interesting biomes and decided to use AMIDST. Found myself nice seed with nice surroundings and with most important biomes (desert, since i use much glass, mesa, since i wanted to try building with clay, plains, since I wanted horse and swamp, since I wanted leads) in reachable distance and stuck to it.
Probably will do something quite different next time.
I've always used random seeds but recently I've been looking for seeds in Amidst. I have structures and stongholds off so I see nothing other than the biome layout. I always get a ugly spawn or a undesirable biome. Maybe I feel like building a treehouse in a jungle, I'm not going to generate a random seed only to spawn in a snowy taiga that goes on for a 1000 blocks on all sides.

I am currently lurking more than I am posting. I haven't gone anywhere.
I tried a seed I found in Amidst today and lost interest really fast. Exploration is a big part of the game for me and not as fun if I already know what is there.
I then tried two random seeds. The first one was boring with forests, taiga, and extreme hills near spawn. I wandered and got lost and didn't find anything good. The second one spawned me near the edge of a jungle by a jungle temple (my first one) and near a roofed forest. I think I'm going to stick with this one for my non peaceful world.
well i used to always look for seeds with temples and villages and diamonds and strongholds. like cheating seeds. they always ended up in me resetting em. but one day i spawned in a ranom seed, an ugly savannah, i was about to create a new world until i saw plains with surrounding trees, lava and water pools nearby, 4 ravines, and a mountain going above the sky just 100 blocks away. this is now my main survival world
The Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything.

Usually it depends on my mood. I've used random seeds or seeds I type in. Rarely I've checked out seeds posted by others but this feels wrong somehow. I like discovering things for myself.
On my current world I used the date I created it, as a seed. I spawned in a taiga biome and decided to stick with it, To date, it's my longest played world. I'm a habitual restarter usually. I start out liking a seed and I get bored so easily I go onto the next one.
I'm also a serial restarter. That's an excellent idea and I'm going to start doing that. With some slight tweaking of course.
it's not survival if you know what kind of seed you are going to have.
I disagree. We still have to go about actually surviving. This means gathering, crafting, mining and building. Whether you know what kind of terrain to expect or not, a Creeper can still sneak up and ruin you and I've lost count of the times I misjudged and died by lava. Also, unless you painstakingly explore every inch of your world, you're bound to discover something at some point. Still, once in a while I get the urge to start off blind on a random seed.

But if i land on a crappy sort of seed like a tiny island or something, i just try again.
