hey, not sure if im the first to make something like this, but ive never seen it before so im guessing i just made it up,and im posting it on here
it works by using water and lava, not really good at explaining though so...hopefully its simple enough that i dont need to explain =3=
also, i claim it as my idea since i havent seen anything else like it .-.
For a bit I thought you wanted to make a STONE farm, which is really just smelting cobblestone from your cobblestone generator. However you did not. Thirdly, cobblestone generators are only really ever useful when your castle is under siege ( somehow) because strip mining give you both cobblestone and other rarer materials.

What's this about strip mining. Branch mine underground- nothing visible from ground level, lots of ores, and lots of cobblestone! But I guess if you've pretty much exhausted the ground beneath and around your base, a cobblestone generator is good.

Untrue. I'm a huge fan of half-step roads leading to all parts of my base/kingdom/map, and you need cobble to make half steps.
Also, if you're making a tower or the like, you may want to use cobble or stone, in which case you ONLY need cobble (which can be smelted into stone) and you don't need other minerals.
Scarring the map with strip mines is ugly, too.
You can't see underground normally, so build it under the ground... Cobble generators are, like nbord said, only useful as a wall re-generator. Branch mining (also a minimal effect on that "beautiful landscape of smoothstone and ores") gives you cobblestone while also giving you obscene amounts of diamond.
It's okay, you're just a little behind the times. Cobblestone generators have been around for a while.
That said, it's not like they're useless. I'd say it's more convenient to have a generator than to go out and mine it all, especially if you have a way to just hold down the button and get it all while you're AFK, or have it quickly available during siege etc.
