Just a note for everyone saying it will likely include nether materials.
I doubt it very highly, as the nether is inaccessible in SMP, and therefore lanterns are addable only. So if anything, he will likely fix Nether SMP before lanterns, or lanterns will be created from Glass/Wood and a torch. He wouldn't make a lantern require something like Iron, as for the first few nights you are desperately digging for that iron.

I figured I might as well build a giant cobblestone tower right next to your house. Because I wanted people to think your house looked crappy.
As some people stated in this topic, the survival part is only within the first 10 minutes of gameplay.
After that you can mine during the night and chop some wood during the day and live happily in your fancy castle that you built with all your cobblestone.
It wouldnt be THAT challenging if there were hunger, or exposure, but it would add some variety, and it would make a little harder.
I see no problem in this, I would play in this survival mode, and as I said, there could be a survival slider for the people who think it's tedious.
And i like the idea of lanterns lasting forever and torches going finite. It would, too, add some more challenge to the game.
Notch said that he would not be adding lanterns on twitter a while ago. he said that glowstone was the "lantern".
If Notch wants to make torches temporary, I'd be okay with that. If he's given up on that idea, I'd also be fine with that. I'm actually really more irritated with how inefficient it is to harvest glowstone than I am hung up on the whole lantern thing, but I would be perfectly happy with a brighter, different-looking version of the current torch (for aesthetic purposes), whether the torch itself becomes temporary or not.
If JayP is telling the truth about glowstone being our lantern, with no other, more efficient version in our future, I do have a problem with glowstone's horrible inefficiency. I hope Notch plans on increasing the dust drops from those golden glowing blocks.
I want it. Imagine wanting a challenge in the game to make your mega structures more impressive! So don't say people don't want them, the only people that don't are the people that should be playing creative.
i personally like the challenge of minecraft survival. but i do not want deteriorating torches. saying that people who dont want it should be playing creative is a HUGE generalization. survival is very challenging. building a protective base, finding materials, etc. So don't say people who dont want it should play creative, because minecraft is challenging as it is. ligit mega structures dont need to be any more impressive. adding deteriorating torches would just make the game tedious, not funner.
If torches become finite, what purpose would they serve? I can't think of any use for them whatsoever once another 'normal world' (ie. not the nether) infinite light source has been introduced.
Maybe it's because you can make 12 torches (or more) with a single tree? I imagine that lanterns will be quite a bit more difficult to make and will not be made using charcoal, but instead will look like this:
= 10 lanterns
Using normal coal.
Torches will have value because they're easy and cheap to make, perfect for some quick iron mining in a shallow cave.
TO all the people bitching about the torch change....
We don't know how long the torches will last, so if they last 7 in game days, that's about two and a half hours of play. By then you should have plenty of iron that you can use to relight the torches. And relighting torches every 2 to 3 hours is not that annoying...... Also, If notch could stagger the time they went till they went out, like he did with the growing time of trees, It would make it so all your torches would not go out at once.
